I've got such a bad coffee addiction that it was starting to become a problem as my hours on the hoof increased. Then I read an article by an ultra-runner about chocolate-covered coffee beans - he was using them to get re-focused when tiredness and sleep deprivation were becoming a problem on long ultras.
I can't run that kind of distance, (yet:D), but I didn't see why I should have to wait to enjoy the little Java delights. On the last few long runs I have grabbed a handful and ended the run full of beans.
I try to be discrete about nibbling them during races - nowt to do with performance enhancing substances - I just don't want people thinking I'm eating rabbit shit:eek::D
I've used them a few times really good for keeping you pepped up but they do dehydrate you.
But there is this for healthy energy drink, I've used a few times. good tase and no chemicals or additives.
Orbana
It'd have to be good rehydration because the price makes your eyes water so much.
Tried the baby food this weekend.
Apple and strawberry (Ella's) wasn't bad at all.
Another brand in Tesco (banana, blueberry and vanilla) was Ok too.
Not fully converted yet, but prepared to keep on trying.
Easy to get down and no obvious or immediate after effects.
Noticed a roast lamb dinner on the same shelf. ;)
Baby food is sooo wrong on many levels. Its all about pies and butties
Asda's own brand Fruit Jellies are veggie and go down great
I've never actually tried Jelly Babies before, but Tesco had em on offer last night , so I've bought some and am going to try them out on my Duddon recce on Friday...
for the record, I usually survive off: cashew nuts, flapjack, nutri-grain bars, cocktail sausages, pasties and rice pud
it's rare that I fancy anything sweeter than flapjack - rather than sweeties I usually just stick with energy drink for full-on sugar hit
Anyone tried running with / on Cadbury's Creme Eggs?
I tried the Ella's Kitchen stuff over Easter, wading through the Lake District snow, came to some conclusions:
Childhood obesety (getting fat and spelling badly) is a myth. No kid EVER got fat on portions that small:( 2 mouthfulls of mango and rice and that was the pouch empty.
The stuff tastes great and is easy to keep down because you get so little.
It costs more than malt whisky measure for measure.
May be organic but its not green given the huge packaging waste relative to content.
Great for a really important race but otherwise, make your own or use maltloaf/jelly babies.
Well, welll.
A Fruitarian no less. 40-50 bananas per day.

Get that fruit down. ;)
It must work for him, but I'd be chucked out of the house for unreasonable behaviour..........
Did a 15 miler yesterday & took an electrolyte drink & an Organix Goodies Carrot Cake bar. Ok, it's another baby food, but, very tasty & easy to digest on the hoof. The ingredients are: wholegrain oats, raisins, carrot juice & orange oil. No more sickly gels for me.
It's Jelly Babies for me (but only towards end of long races), but has anyone suggested marshmallows? I tried them once on the 3 Peaks. Ariived late. Tore open huge bag of them, grabbed big handfull, stuffed them into bumbag. You know what's coming....3 hours later opened zip to find marshmallows stuck to waterproofs, inside of bumbag, map etc. Still tasted good though.
P.S. Try M&S Jelly Babies - very fruity.
Jelly babies are good for long runs. Never sure whether to eat them head first, though. Any advice out there?
Health Warning
Eating more than 3 boxes of Thornton's Fruit Jellies (i.e. more than 60 jellies) on the same run may not be good for you. Makes me puke anyway.
Sorry about your suffering and all that, but I can't help laughing out loud sitting here alone in my kitchen. What a joy these forums are. Eleven pages of discussion on jelly babies - the FRA certainly gets its priorities right.
Just bought a packet of jelly babies from Tesco for Saturday - based on all this advice
Bassets J.B's in the box are on offer at sainsburys...I cant remember the price.....and the type in the yellow plastic rapper are £1 for a bag. ;)
May as well mention it now, at Sedbergh Gala in the cakes tent they were selling iced cupcakes with a jelly baby on top. You could bite the top off the cake and get all the icing, some cake, and the jelly baby; they told me i was their best customer that day. I left the gala with a packet of ginger shortbreads for some reason, why didn't i think to buy the cake store out of jelly baby cakes?
I've been eating Cadbury's Giant Choc Buttons on long runs recently. Don't take much chewing but can end up with chocolate on your hands as they tend to melt in warm weather ;)
the jelly babies were needed today and a load of water - Lletty race
It's all about Organix baby cocoa & oat bars at the moment for me. They only need a couple of chews & they're down doing the business. Taste great too. They also do carrot cake. All natural ingredients !!
Buchanans Super Jelly Beans for me. "Large and very tasty"- they are and veggie too. If unable to get hold of then Morrison's jelly beans are a stand-in.
Tried the Banana & Rice 6 month old food from Ella's after reading this tread, taste was a very strong banana, with a gritty texture, I found it repeated on me during run, not sure its for me, found some Sun maid fruit fingers with yogurt bars in tesco's or also apricot cereal Geobar (Fair trade) which go down very nicely on a long run. Like the Turkish Delight idea, thought about refining the idea by chilling or freezing it
Recently tried turkish delight, very good. Also found a bar called "naked" in Tescos, made in Wales, nice vegan friendly ingredients, very "sports bar like" in taste. Chocolate and apple flavours and only 80 pence each. Been into cadbury's brunch bars recently and back on fig rolls too. TBH fig rolls are on their way out for me...
Anyone got any savoury ideas,? Far too much sweet and refined sugar products here!
Yeah. Fig rolls my arse.
Visited the dentist today after one of my teeth split at the weekend and told to cut the sweets down, might take her for a run for a few hours to make her understand :D On a serious note will have to try and cut sweets down, any less sugary alternatives you guys have found? I usually take bananas, jelly babies and a mars bar on long runs.
