Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Toyed with the idea of doing it on a singlespeed, done a lot of training on one, or should i say with one over my shoulder. Did last years with a 34x27 low gear, but noticed a lot of people with mtb mechs and cassettes on. My bike's 'peaked' now with a 34x32 low gear. My theory is, if i grunt and grind in training on the singlespeed, pedaling the other should be less grunty, grindy.
As with all things..........we shall see:rolleyes::D
It will still hurt though, but its a nice hurt;)

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
This guy did it on fixed a couple of years ago: http://www.samuri.co.uk/
I am a regular Singlespeeder on the mtb and I think it'd be hard work on the 3 Peaks. I am quite glad I've got gears on my 'crosser!

Yep. Jon's a mate of mine (I wrote up his silliness for 63xc after). I was more interested in any, you know, normal people who'd done it. I'm asking in the wrong place aren't I? :)
I think I quite like the thought of gears, but am mostly too tight to pay for them.

You must be deluded :D I can't possibly equate being mad enough to enter 3 Peaks Cyclocross with being normal :D

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Much as I like riding singlespeed mtb and fixed on the road I think doing the 3 Peaks on a single-speed is pretty pointless. You'd be left for dust on the first road section, be right at the back of the queue at the stile, off earlier carrying and spinning out on every subsequent road section. I SS and fix because it increases my enjoyment of the type of riding I'm doing but that just wouldn't be the case with the Peaks... If there was a defined single-speed class though......

I know it's been done lots of times on singlespeed (and fixed even) but still, what do you folks think?
I'm thinking of having a go at Jon's record, do you wanna race?

Now Rich, you know that would just be embarrassing for both of us. You wouldn't want to see an old mate suffer would you?
I like the red oasis best thanks Al. Can you manage a peanut butter roll too ;)

kinda unsporting but this does happen:eek:
i recall overtaking 5 cars doing low 20's mph towing cyclists between Whernside and Pen y Ghent last year
would of been safer had they got inside the vehicles and had a lift...and scarcely less naughty:D

How much does that Pompino weigh ? I might swap you for my geared poprad for the day if yours is not too heavy.
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
It's not heavy, I'd take a guess at 21lb? That might work out quite nicely..?

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Have just got back from 33 mile 3px training ride organised by the Yorkshire cyclocross association. Hard ride led by a Mr R Jebb who apparently is a well known Fell runner and cyclist. Was at the back most of the time and extremely knackered. Surprised not to see any forumites there.
Just need to concentrate on my uphill, downhill and riding and the flat and then I will be fine.
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Was tied up in the Lakes this weekend otherwise I would have been on this along with stile fixing yesterday.
Anti - did you mean Rob was at the back knackered most of the time or you?
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
seems a good 'ard day out...well done
was it mainly road or offroad ?
i fancied it myself but must admit a ride led by someone who generally finishes events an hour and more ahead of me sounds like alot of suffering :D
my training is generally going ok consisting of
10-17 mile fell runs
4 hr hilly road rides
10tt's shooting low 22's
some interval/hill work
may try and actually do some off road riding nearer the time
oh and buy a squash ball to build up my braking endurance/grip !

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
I am planning a 4hr x-ride tomorrow, on the hills, to test my endurance...
Building up the running again as well, at last... and doing a 10mTT and a 25m TT in preparation as well, as well as trying to carry the bike a fair bit. My upper back is killing me. I have no upper body strength :(

Don't worry i am totally offended at the unwarranted abuse. Seeing as though you are the most constant breaker of the forum code of conduct I am expecting you to do the right thing and ban yourself as Stolly seems to have done.

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
ay, great work:)
my aim is to be fit and fast enough to arrive before the queues form....failing that though a rest will do me good:D

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
been thinking that running with a shouldered bike down worst bits of Whernside may be the faster way of descending it ?
anyone any opinions please ?
last year I nursed the bike over the rocks only to see some canny locals shooting downhill way off the main path on a hardpack trail:cool:
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
That is indeed good news, although I was hoping for a good excuse of a rest...
Having been up Simon's Fell on our recce a few weeks back (without the bike, before you ask) was hard enough, let alone carrying a bike... Mine weighs a ton too :(
Just got myself some pipelagging, to pad it out a bit, as my back has been killing me ever since I started doing this cyclocross lark... It is a spot on my trapezius muscle, caused by twisting and lifting the bike on my shoulder/back I think... The pipelagging won't stop that, but at least it will stop the bruising on my shoulder...

this year i'll be using the fence instead of the less trodden path

I was wondering that... we used the trod, but coming back down the same way, I was thinking that going along the wall, using the fence as a handrail would possibly a better option???
