Not sure about this, after reading last years thread and getting the map out, it looks a lot harder than anything I've done so far.
Is it a turn up, pay yer money an run job?
'fraid I'll be missing this year's race ~ doing the Ben instead. I'll be there in 2009 though.
For the unaware, remember to save some (a lot) of energy for the last climb out of Grisedale beck ~ I've seen grown men cry on this one !

Yes £4 I think, good selection of grub after too. Last climb is a tester after mashing your quads coming off St Sunday! Wonder if the mist will be down AGAIN this year :)Quote:

I forgot how hard this bugger was! Also a slight extension to the route this year of at least 1 mile due to not being able to go straight across Grisedale Beck - back up the valley to Sheepfold and across the sensible bridge before heading back in the right direction. As with many races of late, super wet conditions and mist welcomed 78 starters. Felt OK up Catstye and Helvellyn, the fun started coming off Dollywaggon as the mist seem to belie about the steepness of the descent and I must have totted up at least 50 yards worth of torso slides at various stages. The ground past Grisedale Tarn was saturated and I managed a waist deep sink crossing a particularly boggy bit. For the 3rd time I managed to find a crap line from the top of St Sunday Crag down into the valley. Twice I have come off too early had had to contend with rocky drop offs and this year I over compensated, carried on too far and ended up doing more of a diagonal descent rather than a straight down sort of one. By this point I have to admit to being fooked and could only dream about the jam butts back at the village hall. As ever, the final climb up Grisedale Brow is one steep MF and had me using my kness at one point. Nice bag of jelly babies to delve in from the marshals at the stile before heading back down to the village hall for jam butts, egg butts, cheese butts and cups of tea. Didn't take a watch but when I looked at the village hall clock in between swigs of tea I reckon I managed around 2:40, 28 mins down on by best effort but i was just glad to scoff down some food and sit down.
Good effort by the marshals sat up the hill in those conditions, hope there was some grub left for you and thanks to Achille Ratti for putting on the event.

Hi, I completed the race ok have no injuries or problems was 30 mins slower than last year .The conditions were fairly demanding on tops mist rain and wind. tempereratures were mild enough.Lower down was very wet with lot of torrents to wade and splash about in very slippery on descents and grassy climbs. I thought my shoes were suspect until talking to other finishers and it seemed everyone was on the deck several times. Well done to organizers ,checkpoint staff and other competitors . See some of you at three shires .
Couldn't find any definitive checkpoint info on here for this event so i emailed the organiser for some intel:

Last time this event was discussed on here there was a difference in opinion over where to start the descent from St Sunday Crag, some runners used gullies in the crag and scurried down the scree to the grass. Looking at the OS map the easiest route seems to be to go NE towards Blind Cove and drop straight down onto CP5 at the corner of the plantation down an easier and less steep route. Also which is the best route to Catstye Cam? Again looking at the map taking the footpath to the outflow of Red Tarn and striking straight up for the trig point seems initially to be best, any thoughts on these points? Thanks.

Everyone has to show their kit before their entry is accepted. Was rather a wet one last year - think this was the reason for the diversion.
Your route to Catstyecam is the one everybody takes - out by Gillside and up Birkhouse Moor then the Red tarn outflow path.Quote:

The Blind Cove route you describe is the gully descent that was discussed in the past. There is an initial gully descent from the bottom of the slope as the ridge levels out for Birks.
Past threads have said this race is tougher than it looks and feels more like an AL than an AM, the worst bit is apparrently the last thrash up from the penultimate checkpoint in the valley bottom.Quote:

I alternate this race each year with the Ben as they are both fantastic races for different reasons. This year it's my Grisedale year.
Worst bit for me is not the final climb (as I was ready for that) but the descent off St Sunday cragg. The scree gully is easy enough but the rest of the descent is rough and steep, and by this time in the race your legs have had it.
Top tip ~ if it's misty make sure you get the right line to Brothers Parting stone at the edge of Grisedale tarn as it's very easy to end up in Wythburn valley;)

I am keen to do the Grisedale Horseshoe race but I am not sure where all the checkpoints are. I have found a route which shows missing out Hole in the wall on the return to Glenridding but I have also been told that the final check point is there.
Could anyone help?
From memory, it's catstycam summit, helvellyn summit, grisedale tarn, st sunday crag summit and yes, the hole in the wall as a sting in the tail. There may have been a control in the grisedale valley, not sure about that, but if there is, it's kind of on the way to the h-i-t-w anyway.

The hole in the wall checkpoint (CP6) is not at the 'Hole in the Wall' which is slightly confusing.
The nice marshalls at CP6 were handing out jelly babies last year :)
......and the year before, but it's really too late by then. Jelly babies are needed at CP5 to get you to CP6 in the first place :eek:!!Quote:
