Did Martin and Tom get to the old man first? we saw the first of the County top runners on Swirl how they were going really well, looked as fresh as daisies.

I thought that was John at Levers Hause, shouted Hello into the wind :D

Must apologise to the lad I chased down along Brim fell traverse, I thought you were in our group doing the Duddon Valley recce other wise I'd have told you sooner you where heading to Goats Hause ;)

I'll leave Zlod to reply to this in more detail but appearances must have been deceptive. I don't think either of us felt as fresh as daisies. You might have been mistaking us for Morgan Donnelly who really did look as though he was out for a gentle Saturday afternoon trot around the hills.

We got into the lead around Angle Tarn, extended it over Scafell Pike and then just kept plugging away over Coniston Old Man.

A great race - as has been mentioned above the checkpoint teams did a superb job in rather harsh conditions.

Ah so that was you who waved and said hello Bill! Couldn't identify you that far away and thought it was Jon Broxap. Yes Martin and Tom were well in the lead at the Old Man. They took the lead at about Stake Pass.

I felt very stiff on sunday. That fast road run from Wrynose didn't do the legs any good methinks.

The egg sarnies went down a treat. Must remember that for the next long outing.

weather doesn't look too good for mike's BG this coming weekend. lets hope it changes.

It's definitely the egg sarnies that do it for me. Heading up from Cockley Bridge we went a bit awry - too far left but at least there was a pair who followed us:rolleyes: . We corrected it but then noticed Jon Broxap going to the left too but overtaking us and he seemed to have a good line, so have to have look at that one. A brilliant day. Thanks to Arthur and all the organisers. I think I agree with Geoff - it's my favourite too. I think Grouse enjoyed himself too.

Thank goodness we didn't have Sunday's weather on Saturday. Went for a walk up to Crinkle Crags with the family - it was gorgeous! My wife very kindly loaded my 'sac up with 3 waterproofs, 3 fleeces, 2 water bottles & some food. I presume she thought she had to slow me down as usual - she didn't - I couldn't keep up with my 7 year-old!

Well, how do you put it in words?? That was my first heavy endurance event ever and I enjoyed all of it..... The Swarm of locust on dollywagon, attempted re-location of privates at wythburn, Hallucinations near scafell, injuries at great moss, Ibruprofen overdose at coniston (Not to mention the extreme checkpoint keeper..... gnarly!), Foot slapping speed on wrynose and finally the sprint finish needed in order to keep place. Thanks to everyone involved and everyone who competed, you shone.

I wouldn't believe everything Compo says. Just coming off Coniston Old Man, he said to me "I feel totally strong, I feel I could run forever". At that point, I knew that the last 6 miles were going to be painful! Tom was a star and had the right motivating words at the right times.

There is a race report on the runfurther.com website (although the Old County Tops isn't part of the Montrail series).

Jon> I looked at the Pacer Poles in Lakes Runner. They are certainly interesting. The carbon fibre poles seem significantly lighter than the Aluminium ones. You reckon you can go uphill faster with them then?

A very thorough and interesting report from a totally different perspective to most of the rest of us in the race.

Congratulations on a fine defence of your title - well deserved - hopefully you'll be there again doing battle next year with an even stronger field for the 20th running of this classic event.

For my part, I fully intend to be there again and might even have a go at 'racing' rather than just 'surviving'....

The organiser has asked me to confirm to all interested that the race is run in pairs, as in all previous years. There has been slight confusion due to the layout of the wording in the calendar.

Anyone interested in making up a team for this? Steady pace, just want to have a good day out and finish.

If you look at one of the other threads on this page you'll see that powdered toast man wants a partner, although it looks as if he doesn't want a steady jog round the course!

Does anyone know of anywhere OCT results are displayed? I have always been too busy stuffing my fizog with egg butties to actually look at the results board.

I think the results are just posted to those that requested them.

I've got a copy of last years if you want them pm me with address and I'll send a copy.

But it won't open in Firefox. Just tried opening it in Internet Explorer, and it recognises that it's an Excel file and opens OK.

I'm wary of relying on what's provided after my experiences on the Hobble, and I'll definitely need plenty of nourishment on this race. Can anyone tell me what sort of refreshments will be available?

i) Wythburn - can't quite remember 'cause I'd just gone over on my ankle and was more concerned with the pain....but I think there were drinks and biscuits. Maybe even a sandwich?

ii) Cockley Beck Bridge - a feast!!! Saved me good and proper. Lovely sandwiches (I scoffed several egg ones I seem to remember!) and energy-giving flapjacks. Plus tea!! Can you believe it? In the middle of a fell race!! A cup of tea. HOW civilised

Hopefully they'll be there again on Saturday. Looking forward to it, forecast looking "better" for then - rain and cooler:p

I'll look forward to that, but I'd better take some food (in addition to the emergency stuff) just in case I get peckish.

I hope the weather is cooler than last weekend which was too hot for me.

Last year's food:

Wythburn - jam sandwiches, fruit cake, tea, biscuits

Angle Tarn - water (but you could just open your mouth and tip your head back instead)!

Cockley Beck Bridge - more sandwiches, fruit cake, tea biscuits

You'll probably need some extra en route - it's a long way from Wythburn to Cockley Beck, especially if the weather has broken by Saturday. My partner bonked just before Sca Fell Pike and in spite of having told me a couple of hourse earlier that he couldn't eat chocolate while out running, then proceeded to scoff all my mini mars bars.

I won't be there on Saturday, but if anyone sees a pair of Eden Runners (Paul Flynn and Andy Ramsey), say hello.

Certainly is!! Some friends were out walking last year and said they'd meet us at Angle Tarn with a bit of nosh....unfortunately, we were there much quicker than I'd expected and they hadn't arrived. I think it was more the psychological disappointment that led me to bonk coming across Great Moss. Ne'er mind, the feast at Cockley Beck kicked in halfway up Grey Friar and we had a good run in.

Weather's looking ok for the weekend - a bit cooler, a few showers, very little wind. Should be GREAT!

Daz, the National Trust campsite at Langdale, right opposite the Old Dungeon Ghyll, is the best around there. Not the cheapest ..... but those showers are lovely after 37 miles, and you can fall into the pub afterwards:)
