yes...cake. Will you be doing Moel Siabod in July seeing as though its a WFRA championship race Helen??

mmmmm ... cake!
I have also heard mention of Aran lamb burgers - the thought of them at the finish might keep me going.
Forecast looks like it could be pretty claggy up there but hopefully some of the snow might have gone!
Looking better from a snow point of view, since monday the milder weather has got rid of some of it but not all. As for weather on the day We cant guarantee anything better than our traditional wet, cold welsh climate:rolleyes: Should imagine the full route will now be used. 10.6 miles and 3324ft ascent. Not the 10 mile and 2500 as stated.
Yes i reccied it on hols last year and i thought the 10m/2500 seemed to take longer than it should.
Ive managed to drag a lad from my club and my mum out for this.
Some pictures from today's race can be found here:-

Altye
Our journey ended with Calder Valleys 'Prince'(to quote the fellrunner) or is that princess deciding in bloody Helsby of all places to jack it in so make-up wasnbt ruined and go home to retire to his armchair scoffing biscuits. And to make matters worse the service station that he pulled up in had a Wimpy, he didnt even have the common decency to pull up outside a Burger King.
Good race today in VERY tough conditions. Visibility from mile 2 and back down to mile 8 was near enough zero, still big driffts at the summit which slowed the times down a bit, but the wind chill was cold and a lot suffered. Good though I came 3rd today and took the overall Meirionnydd winter series win by over 8 minutes with 1st in the Rhobell, 2nd in Tarren Hendre and third today. Good turnout today as well considering the conditions, but it was the 1st round of the WFRA NW series.
Think you would of romped it today Tom there was only one in the Juniors race.
Eryri vest or the red one:-) Are you from Wales originally, or Quallify through parents or grandparents??
Shame you couldn't make it Tom, i had to eat all the cake myself. Weather wasn't too bad, but it was poor visibility most of the race. Lots of interesting lines taken but everyone seemed to enjoy it, i definitely did :)
why not have a run round Helsby hill instead Tom?
The best bit of the race for me today was having a slice of the said cake!
Great race. Felt like I had a good race, but was 10min down on previous. Go figure. Thanks Graham and team.
Great race and series as a whole, amazing to see the front runners leaping down that rocky section right at the summit.
This was my first big mountain fell race (done a few smaller ones locally) and wow it was tough! I found the poor visibility difficult psychologically and the wind and cold on the top really took it out of you physically.
I was last but I’m really proud of myself for finishing – just hope I get faster as I feel bad for making all those marshals sit in the cold for so long!!
Many thanks to everyone involved in organising the race.
Well Done emma ! - I stumbled along near the back last year and loved it - you deffo need to do it again under better conditions (maybe next year) as the views can be spectacular
have you got any more races lined up...?
Cheers Daz.
Hope to come back and do it again next year and improve my time. I have a soft spot for Aran Fawddwy as the mountain club I’m a member of has its hut in Cwm Cywarch so it is like our back garden!
Next fell race is Cader Idris need to get training to make the cut off! My long term aim is 3 peaks race next year – really need to put some work in for that!
the results are up linky here

Is anyone else still knackered after this race? I'm in shite order :(
Not bad, no running yesterday. I did a race on sunday all of 5k road. Final round of the Cerist Triathlon club's winter aquathlon series.
A friend of mine did the 500mtr swim and I did the 5k run. Good though we won the event overall and the relay cat. I was only 16 seconds shy of my 5k pb(16:24) I did 16:40 and that was after the Aran race!! Pictures of the event are on fellrunningpictures.co.uk
I find it better after a race to do something the next day, dont know if it would work for everyone though.
Well done all. Here's the view you should have seen, looking West-ish from the ridge last month...

Is anyone doing this?
Sat March 19. £5 on the day. 10 miles.

I'd quite like to run it with someone (slow!) as I get worried on fell races about getting lost! :o
I do like races that are fully marshalled!!
Anyone done it before? Is it an easy route to follow??
Ria,
Not so easy to get lost in this race, it is out and back the same way on an obvious ridge path and the finish section is marked.
ydt
Thinkin of doing this race myself if knee ok . heard its nice but never done it, ill be going slow also
Hmmmm ydt.....I can get lost trying to find my car in Asda carpark...
Cader is straight up & down....I still got lost! Two years in a row! Just a bit worried if the weather closes in.
The poster unfortunatelly gives the incorrect info. The race is 10.6 mile and 3350ft of ascent!!!
The course is much harder than Cader in my opinion. Cader is 4 mile road, 2 mile trail and 4 mile hard pack good running mountain.
Aran on the other hand is 5.2 mile hard slog uphill on, NO man made path and very heavy going underfoot.
What caught me out the first year i did it was thinking that once I made it to the top, it's a downhill run back, WRONG. Once you've descended off the summit of Fawddwy, there's a hidden climb back up to Benllyn which really Zaps you and makes the 4.5 mile descent quite hard work then the nasty sting in the tail climb at the end.
Very rarelly the course is in full visibility, last year the first and last mile was clear the rest was in thick fog hence some runners missing the summit and descending the mountain towards Cwm Cywarch, NOT a nice situation.
Basically a totally different race to Cader and you can add another 7-10 min to your Cader time.
I dont want to put you off. But dont want you turning up and being realy let down and having a poor day.
It is a tough course, and we'll be very, very lucky to get a clear run. Even this week in the good weather the summits have been blanketed with thick fog, due to the fact the ground on the mountain is so moist, whereas Cader has been crystal clear due to being hardpack rock. Also no Water/feed stations and few marshalls.
Last years top 28 were under the 2 hour mark with the winning time being 01:37:58 and that runner is vastly experienced at long and ultradistance running.
Last years Cader race saw the top 85 under the 2 hour mark, so there's the difference between the two races.
Not sure if there's a cut off point.
Last year Cader was thick fog & driving rain....so I know how hard it gets when the weather closes in.
I'd love to do it, but would prefer a fully marshalled race for something like this I think.
Thanks for such good info/advice....
I'll only do it now if I can find someone experienced to run with I think. And that probably won't happen because I'm too slow & would mess up their race!
One day though.....!!
Ria, I too run slowly and ran this race last year. It was tricky in the mist and I only found my way around as I was with another couple of runners. The lady behind me at the summit somehow went in another direction and within minutes had lost her way. I'm not doing it again this year. Other races you may wish to consider could include: Llantysilio or the Red Kite Challenge in April, Moel y Gamelin and Moel Siabod?
Ria - I did Ras Yr Aran a couple of years ago, and finished 102nd out of 107 - I absolutely loved the race and find it difficult to imagine how you could go wrong even in poor vis, although tbf it was a clear day when I did it
oh and I made it 10.9M with 2800ft ascent.
for the record, I did Cader the same year and took 9 mins longer (although that was a ridiculously hot day, and I suffer in the heat)
Moel Siabod is a cracker too
