I think Scraps are the term from 3rd years and up
From the HPM web-site:
"We apologise for the delay publishing this year's start list. We found our spreadsheet record of past entrants was messed up and have been re-entering the data. We want it to be accurate so our lottery system is fair. To explain the lottery is weighted in favour of those who have competed before or have entered without success. The lottery does not however make it impossible for completely new teams and usually 5-6 will be accepted (if the team members have other adequate experience). Thank you for your patience!"
Hey Stolly, hope you get ur team in this year. We are fingers crossed again for this year.
Just to pick up on Phil's and your conversation. We had trained but limited mileage on the hills which is where it's at really! As to the fun event which was last year we were sure we'd get round but as to when who knew. Jam butties at snake pass were the driving force!
I looked at last year and think you were too fit for us, i mean we defaulted to your judgement mainly as you knew everyone that was there lol. for one lad (my girlfriends bro) it was his first major experience of it and i am sure he would have got round :P
i do feel your altenate route we took from sheepfold clough up the stream (new way for us) was the last nail in the coffin as it delayed us nearly 90 min over what it should have taken to get to cutgate. Then the haste to 'catch up' from cut gate
where we were last to cross :S you led us off into mist when approx 1mile NW was next check point. with "moral" low we rang and talked about exiting the route and should have headed south west to misden by howden resevoir for pick up.
but led into clough which ended up heading north (wish i had more confidence in my compass - silva compass are worth the accuracy as mine stopped so felt couldnt challenge direction) we ended up just south of the a628. with pick up impossible now. we trudged off to the langsett carpark where, thankfully my girlfriend came to pick us up!
i love these experiences! lol i reckon we must have done close to 30 mile anyway in random directions and feel that over stolly you are a very fit fell runner, but navigation is not your forte! lol.
to be honest though while sat having a cup of tea with the community worker and her dog in the carpark kitchen thing i had a blast and we all had a good natter and hang out while waiting for lift! lol
anyway, you're a good laugh, strong fell runner, not a navigator, and hopefully we will experience your team overtaking us this year if we both get in! lol
morg :)
i am sure i have pictures of us all having cuppa somewhere
Hi all.
Are the draw results for HPM likely to be out before Christmas? not that i mind the cold running :P
Also, does anyone have any advice to what age a labrador puppy can start running in fells? More than 5 mile? Everything I have seen is a bit vague on age and distane because of bones growing.
Cheers
Hi Moog, I agree with you about the 'fun' last year. I just checked my garmin track of the HPM (it lasted until not long after we bombed out) and my 'shortcut' (cough) at Sheepfold Clough actually only wasted about 20 or so minutes; it just seemed longer in the dark and fog (and fricking heather). Again our line after Cutgate is quite interesting too - we ended up north of the swamp that is supposedly the path there, probably because we were trying to find non-muddy ground, but came incredibly close to picking it up again before losing confidence and heading for the higher ground. As for getting off the hill - we definitely did the right thing in just heading down :)
That said this past year my 'navigation skills' have been tested well beyond their limits - add to the HPM two BGR failures down to stupid navigation in crap visabilty. I'm getting better with every navigational error and, as for my Peak District navigation in the HPM, I hadn't been able to recce (due to not getting my team in two years running) and was going from vague memories from 2010 :D
Here you you Moogiej:
4:52 hours in at Sheepfold Clough before my extended "shortcut"

And 5:33 hours in and back on the right track:

I'd guess that the hypotenuse line would have taken us say 25 minutes anyway but, either way, there's no way it added 90 minutes to our time.
Hey Stolly,
Saw this and made me chuckle! You are absolutely right fitness was not there in 2012, i have to say i was exposed most definately. In my defense though, the opening 13 miles was brutal- i was over heating due to stupidly putting to many layers on, i was struggling to rehydrate as i put some tabs in my water (which i didn't train with) that tasted rank, i felt dizzy and sick for most of that first period and my head torch just was not standing up to that fog, slowing me even further. Once we reached the food stop at 13 and i sorted myself out (ie ditched the water and refilled, stripped off) i feel my perfomance improved, i kept going and picked up the pace. For the record, although i mentioned it i never changed my socks once!
More importantly l learnt a lot of lessons which have improved my training and preparation. I have been navigating with more confidence and am in a lot better shape already. That ridiculous head torch has been relegated to the loft as well!!!
I hope your team gets in Stolly, sorry we frustrated you last year, i still had a great time even though it turned into a bit of a farse and would do it all again tomorrow. I will finish that race at some point if its the last thing i do!
Will.
Hey no probs Will. The main point I was trying to make in the beginning (badly as usual) is that its incredibly frustrating trying to get your own team into this event, especially if you are perpetually on the edge or outside of the HPM fraternity. And I'm not complaining about the rules here - one of the things that makes the whole event so great is the fact that so many of the same people run it year on year. My frustration is that, if you can't get in with your own team (something like a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 chance for a brand spanking new team I'm guessing), then your only option is to throw your hat into the ring as a late sub, something I've done 3 times now, never ever succeeding with an original team. Turning up as a stranger to another team or even as a member of a full team of randoms is always going to lead to mis-matches. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll probably have to do the same in 2013 again  and this year's delay in announcing the teams isn't making things any easier :)
I've sent a message to Rich to ask for an update. I'll let you know what he says
Spoke to my club mates about this the other week.
There was a lot of "NO"s and "Never again"s (the accents even became noticeably more Scottish)
Maybe I'll just schedule the weekend free and book the car and get ready for dropouts on a slowish team
Hoorah! The High Peaks Scuttlers are in! :)
Excellent news stolly, sounds like you've waited a while for a good in at it!
I received an email notification Ian. Sent to me as team leader :)
My lot are in.
Just had a quick look back through this thread and there are some GPS tracks up...thought GPS not allowed on HPM? Might be missing something though, didn't read through all the posts.
S
GPS with a readout isn't allowed. GPS trackers (that record your route but require downloading to a pc to view) are allowed. They can be very useful for post-event arguments about who went wrong and where :)
Goyt Valley Staggerers are in.
no HPM next year for me unfortunately... will keep up the training and try and get a last minute place.. If not its the Hardmoors 55 for me.
I'm out now. no point risking a long trip out in the middle of the night in winter with no training and a dodgy ticker :( reserve already inplace before I'm inundated with requests.
Out last night near cut throat and there was a a group justs setting off for a reccie about 7.15 was it you.
This morning went for a walk up abbey brook and saw another group of 3 passing wet stones at about 10.30

A fantastic run from Cutthroat to Snake yesterday - still plenty of snow about :)

Blog updated :)
Ian hopefully things will frost up a bit - the snow was really unreliable for running on, sometimes fully supporting your weight and other times not at all, often resulting in knee deep shuffling. All the gullies between the groughs were snow drifty and even my (less than perfect I'm sure) attempt at finding the north west passage off of Bleaklow wasn't that runnable due to snow. The worst bit ironically though was the Pennine Way from Bleaklow Head - the snicket that the PW follows was chocka with snow. If it doesn't get colder it needs to get warmer and melt it all :)
great blog Stolly, i even got a mention !!
Looking forward to a run out with the High Peak Scuttlers, many thanks for the invite..
Ian it will not be the same without your voice coming out of the dark.. Is that Phil ??? Is that Ian???
Phil I'll get a kit sorting out email round tomorrow. I think I have all of the team bits and bobs :)
