    Re: High Peak Marathon

    Here you you Moogiej:

4:52 hours in at Sheepfold Clough before my extended "shortcut"

And 5:33 hours in and back on the right track:

I'd guess that the hypotenuse line would have taken us say 25 minutes anyway but, either way, there's no way it added 90 minutes to our time.

My experiences have been err... 'mixed' to put it mildly with last year's team being a nightmare. I joined the team about 2 weeks before the off, not knowing any of them, and, well, they were just not fit for purpose - one team member was knackered and wanted to change his wet socks by the time we got to Hollins Cross (the first time!!!!!). Needless to say we did not finish....
    Hey Stolly,

Saw this and made me chuckle! You are absolutely right fitness was not there in 2012, i have to say i was exposed most definately. In my defense though, the opening 13 miles was brutal- i was over heating due to stupidly putting to many layers on, i was struggling to rehydrate as i put some tabs in my water (which i didn't train with) that tasted rank, i felt dizzy and sick for most of that first period and my head torch just was not standing up to that fog, slowing me even further. Once we reached the food stop at 13 and i sorted myself out (ie ditched the water and refilled, stripped off) i feel my perfomance improved, i kept going and picked up the pace. For the record, although i mentioned it i never changed my socks once!

More importantly l learnt a lot of lessons which have improved my training and preparation. I have been navigating with more confidence and am in a lot better shape already. That ridiculous head torch has been relegated to the loft as well!!!

I hope your team gets in Stolly, sorry we frustrated you last year, i still had a great time even though it turned into a bit of a farse and would do it all again tomorrow. I will finish that race at some point if its the last thing i do!

    Will.

    Re: High Peak Marathon

Hey no probs Will. The main point I was trying to make in the beginning (badly as usual) is that its incredibly frustrating trying to get your own team into this event, especially if you are perpetually on the edge or outside of the HPM fraternity. And I'm not complaining about the rules here - one of the things that makes the whole event so great is the fact that so many of the same people run it year on year. My frustration is that, if you can't get in with your own team (something like a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 chance for a brand spanking new team I'm guessing), then your only option is to throw your hat into the ring as a late sub, something I've done 3 times now, never ever succeeding with an original team. Turning up as a stranger to another team or even as a member of a full team of randoms is always going to lead to mis-matches. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll probably have to do the same in 2013 again and this year's delay in announcing the teams isn't making things any easier

Spoke to my club mates about this the other week.

There was a lot of "NO"s and "Never again"s (the accents even became noticeably more Scottish)

Maybe I'll just schedule the weekend free and book the car and get ready for dropouts on a slowish team
