9.13 miles, 2,346 feet, 2 hours 15 minutes: Loughrigg trails via Skelwith Fold/Bridge. No rain, though I could see showers elsewhere. Overcast, cool breeze; slippery. Fells and roads very quiet.
7.76 miles, 3,200 feet, 2 hours 26 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including down/up/down the race route descent - 11/23/10 minutes. Strong wind on top, but not cold; cloud/mist down to 600 feet or so; fine drizzle on and off. No sun. Remains slippery. Only 5 seen on the fell.
Had hoped to do the Wansfell race this xmas but i assume it won't be on in any format.
Shame... xmas week is usually fantastic for races... xmas day parkrun, then fell races boxing and new years day, with another in between...
7.97 miles, 3,048 feet, 2 hours 23 minutes: Waterhead - Jenkins Crag - Wansfell Pike - Hundreds Road - Wansfell Pike - race descent. Initially overcast and drizzly, later some blue sky and sunshine - very windy on the top. Very slippery - studs just lift the grass where there is any. Nobody else seen on the fell.
9.87 miles, 2,992 feet, 2 hours 48 minutes: Loughrigg trails. Lovely sunshine, slight cool breeze. Lots about, understandably - had to change my route about a dozen times to avoid people.
6.45 miles, 2,110 feet, 1 hour 51 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including up/down the race descent (23/11 minutes). Cloud/mist down to about 300 feet at first, lifted later; constant light drizzle, a bit windy on top but not too bad. Only half a dozen others on the fell.
10.9 miles, 2,825 feet, 2 hours 39 minutes: Red Screes via Roundhill Farm both ways. Overcast/light drizzle giving way to sunshine/blue sky. Cold breeze on top. Slippery of course. Only five others seen on the fell.
12.75 miles, 3,375 feet, 3 hours 24 minutes: Fairfield clockwise. Saw eight other runners, two of them juniors I used to train, one of whom beat Kilian on the Seat Sandal descent. Mainly sunny, the odd cloud, about 30 seconds of rain, cold wind at times.
I did a 15.5 mile run round all the scenic splendours of inner-city Cov... the canal, Foleshill, City Centre, Hillfields, Bell Green, Longford... all the top areas :D. 2hrs02
6.07 miles, 2,549 feet, 1 hour 47 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including down/up/down the race descent to the kissing gate (11/21/11 minutes). Light rain throughout. Claggy down to the town, thicker higher up. Cold wind on the top. Slippery. Saw five others on the fell.
The race starts behind The Salutation Hotel, but currently finishes much higher up Stockghyll Lane, at the old Kelsick Grammar School - did it finish lower down in the past? Once off the tarmac, and through the first field, there is then the kissing gate, and almost all of the rest of the ascent is on the tourist path steps. The descent is almost all on grass; it is to the right of the steps looking down, and well away from them - it joins the ascent route just above the kissing gate. From the kissing gate to the top is a well recognised AAC training route - some can run up all the steps. The descent to the kissing gate takes me about 8 minutes when the grip is good and the bracken not too high; through the lower field and the short road section would probably add 3 minutes or so to that. The grass is of course very slippery at the moment so considerable care is needed.
12.58 miles, 3,688 feet, 3 hours 32 minutes: Fairfield clockwise. In clag from Nab scar to High Pike. Very strong head wind for the first half of the descent. No rain, not cold, but I had full waterproofs on. Very slippery. Did not see a soul on the fell.
12.32 miles, 3,294 feet, 3 hours 15 minutes: Fairfield c/w. What a contrast to yesterday - sunshine, the odd cloud/patch of fog, no significant wind, waterproof top not used. Still slippery. About a dozen on the fell.
7.08 miles, 2,838 feet, 2 hours 15 minutes: Wansfell Pike - including down/up/down the race route descent; that adds 45 minutes in total. Very similar to yesterday: mainly sunny, the odd cloud, no rain, cool breeze at times, waterproof top not used. Still slippery, but a bit drier than it was. Saw about a dozen on the fell. Not many cars about.
7.5 miles, 833 feet, 75 minutes: Skelwith Fold/Bridge - Drunken Duck loop. Very overcast, no sun, no rain, no wind at this level. Quite a few delivery vans about, only saw about 10 people.
7.44 miles, 3,560 feet, 2 hours 33 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including down/up/down/up/down the race descent. Lots on the fell. Sunshine and clouds, excellent visibility, no rain nor wind, terrain drying up somewhat.
Three and a half thousand feet is a good amount to pack into 7.5 miles!
Weather is shocking here today. I pulled out 4800ft in 10 miles, so a similar ratio on paper, but obviously that was all treadmill work, and none of the descent to go with it!
12.37 miles, 3,281 feet, 3 hours 17 minutes: Fairfield c/w. In clag the whole way - visibility down to 50 paces above about 600 feet. No rain, no wind, slippery from condensation on all surfaces. Quite a few on the fell. One asked me if there was a path off Fairfield - he was about 5 feet from it. I was pleased to find all the trods again.
8.16 miles, 889 feet, 1 hour 21 minutes: Skelwith - Drunken Duck loop. Initially overcast/drizzle, later sunshine and showers; gusty at times. Only saw two other people.
8.5 miles, 3,894 feet, 2 hours 53 minutes: Wansfell Pike; down/up/down/up/down to the kissing gate again, the second up on the steps. Only 5 others seen on the fell. Sunshine/clouds/no rain/no wind/no mist/not that cold. Less slippery than of late.
12.27 miles, 3,400 feet, 3 hours 14 minutes: Fairfield c/w. Mainly sunny, some clouds, the odd wintry shower and a very cold wind on top. Some ice on the rocks. Only saw four others on the fell. Town is quiet.
7 miles, 1,791 feet, 2 hours 12 minutes: Wansfell Pike. Three to four inches of snow on the top, snow line about 1,000 feet. No wind, so not cold. Very slippery - micro spikes were great on snow covered rock, but useless on snow covered grass. Four others on the fell. Roads/car parks very quiet.
7.46 miles, 2,080 feet, 2 hours 1 minute: Loughrigg trails. Blustery wind at times, almost constant drizzle, overcast. Snow/slush above about 750 feet, making it extremely slippery. Only saw five others.
7.35 miles, 3,570 feet, 2 hours 36 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including down/up/down/up/down the race descent. Sunny, no wind, no ice/snow to speak of at this level, but lots of visible snow on the higher fells. Terrain surprisingly dry. Lots on the tourist paths on the fell.
Edit: My partner tells me that town is heaving.
12.37 miles, 3,730 feet, 3 hours 38 minutes: Fairfield c/w. Totally benign conditions in the valley - dangerously wild on top - dense cloud above 2,000ft, deep snow compressed into ice on the paths, a very strong cold wind. So glad I had my micro spikes, and I knew the way. Saw about 30 or so on the fell, mainly on the way up as I was coming down. A real adventure.
10.96 miles, 2,743 feet, 3 hours 11 minutes: Red Screes via Roundhill Farm both ways. Much like yesterday - lovely warm sun in the valley - dense cloud and a very cold wind above about 1,500 feet. Still about a foot of snow on the top where it has not been trodden down. Used micro spikes on the descent, though they were not as crucial as yesterday. Saw ten others on the fell.
Going up Stockghyll Lane, half a mile past the turnoff for Wansfell Pike, a gate appears on the left just after crossing a cattle grid - it zig-zags down and up the other side of the valley on a grassy/muddy path, and brings you to Roundhill Farm - turn left on the narrow lane, then sharp right when you reach the Struggle - after a quarter of a mile the gate leading to Red Screes appears on your left. This is Wainwright's "Gate between young oaks". So you start off heading towards Middle Grove/High Grove, but turn off left well before reaching either of them. I use this route as it avoids town, and it is a change from going via Scandale, Wansfell true top, or Middle/High Grove.
Ah i see... so up the south ridge... i've always just ran up the road to the stile (a tough start!)
Although last couple of times i've quite enjoyed a blast up Scandale and then back down the south ridge.
One of my favourite peaks, no doubt due to location and accessibility.
I just run up from centre of town, up the Kirkstone/Struggle road...
"which stile?" i meant the "gate between young oaks"... for some reason i recalled it being a stile, but seems i am mistaken.
It's a cracking descent back down that south ridge...
7.75 miles, 3,615 feet, 2 hours 45 minutes: Wansfell Pike, with down/up/down/up/down the race descent. Overcast, with scattered patches of cloud lower down. No wind nor rain. Slippery. About 20 seen on the fell.
9.3 miles, 1,017 feet, 1 hour 34 minutes: Skelwith - Drunken Duck loop with a few bits added on. Overcast, no rain, no wind so not cold. Only saw six others.
9.14 miles, 4,078 feet, 2 hours 58 minutes: Wansfell Pike, with down/up/down/up/down the race route. Mist/cloud, getting denser with height; constant mizzle/drizzle. Not windy, so not that cold. Very slippery. About a dozen on the fell.
