Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Thanks for all the advice it is much appreciated I'll take note of those times Stolly plus also have a look at the splits of a few runners - only problem then would be to try and spot them at the start of the race!!!- I have got the feeling that people do go off like loons then pay for it later - I know I have been one of them in the past but on shorter races. I always find it mentally sapping when you might have overcooked it at the start then there are a constant stream of runners coming past you that you can do nothing about. I will be a happy man when I come in to the finish field again.
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Looking forward to this but very apprehensive as I've only just got back from injury. Was hoping for under 4 hours but will be happy to get round now.
Will be in a white vest with 'Mossley Hill AC' on the back if anyone wants to get a 4-4:15 peleton going, planning to start easy up pyg then run the flats hard.
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Good advice from Ian and Stolly. I've only run the race once before but would definitely agree about not overcooking it going up PyG.
I tend to set off too fast no matter what race I do but luckily I managed to settle into a reasonable pace which I pretty much kept up all the way. Held a little bit back for Ingleborough but then pushed it all the way home. I looked at my splits and from Whernside I moved up position by 144 people so it worked for me as a middle pack runner. I would like to beat my time (4.30) and think I could push it a bit more this time. When I did the race I had only recced it once and wasn't used to longer distances so I played it a bit safe but that was two years ago and I've been round the route loads of time since in all conditions plus I've done a lot more long distance stuff. I guess it will be about judging where to push myself a bit more but ultimately I want to enjoy it so I'll try not to get stressed about it and just do the best I can. Anything could happen on the day and I'm not an elite runner or serious racer so it doesn't matter really.

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
My last 3 years have been: 2010-4.30, 2011-3.59 & 2012-3.54. So anywhere around the 4 hour mark for me, over or under. Like Hes says, I'm out to enjoy the day & lap up the atmosphere when running the last 100 yards !
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Good times, well done! That last 100 yards is great. I ran in with two runners and one of them said we should try a sprint finish and break the 4.30 mark. We didn't manage it but we finished laughing our heads off.

Why, after a whole winter of good health, do I now sense the beginnings of a stinker of a cold? Bugger.
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Thanks for all the pointers folks. My first time doing it and my only concern is that I always go off too quickly...

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I'm hoping for around 4:15 but anyone wanting a 4:15 time don't follow me, I ALWAYS set off too quick in races and I have no doubt I'll do the same again. I expect to be top 100 at the top of the first climb and spend the rest of the race drifting back through the field.
I'll be the one in hat and gloves. Vest and shorts ? No chance !
