Two steady kilometre-ish dog walks for me today only. Chemo not horrendous but planning a tail-walk Parkrun for weekend
Up to the Outwoods, 35 minutes. Nothing remarkable, except that it's my longest run since the calf injury at the beginning of March. Only mild discomfort, although I still await the DOMS tomorrow. But at least it's a small compensation for not being fit to run Mount Famine, which has become my favourite form of torture over the last two years.
^ nice one ak
A saunter round with the tail walker at Parkrun for me
Glad to see that you are still getting out, DT. I was thinking of going to Parkrun this morning; but the problem is, even though "it's not a race", I can't help myself going off at racing speed when there are other runners around -- which wouldn't have done my calf any good.
Sensible approach. I’ll be haring off next weekend given half a chance, especially because Stef is easing away from me
Final dog walk of the day brought up 10 miles walking today - my best since my operations
Just started using a GPS watch last month and had always 'guestimated' my mileage and ascent. What a shocker!! I've been overestimating my mileage for most runs by at least 10% but underestimating ascent too. Last week I did 5 runs with 48Km and 2200m of ascent. Longest run was 13km, shortest 5km. My pace, especially uphill was so slow! I kept waiting for the ping of the next km............7,8,9 minutes ping!!
My longest km was 24minutes! Climbing up the steep side of Ben Tianavaig, 450m. Quickest, 3.40, descending BT down the good side.
Need to build mileage up to where I thought I was now. I'd always classed my 13km as a 10 miler!! Sorry to mix my metrics/imperial, In in the process of transitioning.
Did a steady run out from Little Stretton, up Ashes valley to Pole Bank, then down the Stretton Skyline descent... 5.5 miles and 1200ft... ran with company today, which was an absolute pleasure and very different from my usual training runs!
Then a gentle 4 miles yesterday evening.
Weekly total around 37 miles and about 9750ft... a little low, but feeling decent for next weeks Moelwyns race and hopefully a champs pb placing...
Friday an easy 6 miles around Wollaton Park and then on Saturday 3 accents of Kinder via Grindslow Knoll, Crowden Tower and then Jacobs Ladder to Kinder Low. back around skyline to Ollerboook. ran out of steam but ankle not too bad.
Today an easy 10k to recover from yesterday's debacle. Reccied the 2nd half of the 43k trail I'm doing next month. 25k and 1500m climbing, total rubbish, felt like I barely ran any of it. It had rained solid for 3 days prior, climbs and descents were either gloopy mud or running rivers, three hours in and on the last 600m climb and I bonked, starting to question the wisdom of being up there in pouring rain having seen absolutely nobody for hours. Arrived back at the van in 4h which added to the reccie of the first half last week makes an 8 hour day. I should be safe from the cut off but it'll be a fight to avoid lanterne rouge. Winning time last year was around 4h20...
9.5km with 300m. From the house up Bein Roishader. 62 minutes so quite pleased. Very boggy underfoot despite the recent good weather. Beautiful weather and saw a sea eagle so pretty good day. Followed up with an hour in gym.
a 3 miler mostly on grass, at 8.30 a mile average after a 9 day lay-off.
Pain in balls of heels and down to middle toe of left foot since early April, so decided on a week off.
Felt better, although not quite 100%. Will ice and take a couple of ibuprofen and see what tomorrow brings.
Had a bit of a bimble around Langdale. Ticked off a couple of Wainwrights I'd not already bagged and some parts of Cumbria not frequented by many. It was lovely.
Which Wainwrights did you tick off PeteS...? A lovely area...
Cold Pike and lingmoor fell. I've walked/run past them many a time but never been up either. Always heading for bigger things I suppose.
The west side of the Crinkles, Mosedale and Lingcove Beck were interesting and so quiet. Didn't see another soul over there but there were obviously loads of walkers on the Crinkle Crags - Bowfell ridge.
Today's training was basically an AS style blast up Ullock Pike as I was in the North lakes and only had and hour to spare before heading home. Managed to beat my PB to the summit so quite chuffed with that.
I need to tot up figures but I think this will be the most running ascent I have managed in a month for well over a 2 or 3 years largely due to injury or cycling taking preference.
I “ticked off” Cold Pike a few weeks ago... very quiet area... and the Mosedale/Lincove area is certainly desolate...
Great stuff!
Thanks to trips to the Lakes and North Wales, it's looking like May will be coming in at approximately 6500m ascent. I'm sure some of you do that in a week but living in the vertically challenged Midlands, I'm quite pleased with that (and even more so that the current crop of injuries have held up to a hammering!)
I've done my biggest week since I started running in Dec. In 7 days, 85km/3500m (95 and 4000m if I stop procrastinaing and run today!). All the tendonitis issues have finally calmed down, though something's wrong in my groin/thigh. Hurts at the start of a run, eases off, though seems to limit my stride. Physio next week (again...).
Another big week to come, then a taper for my 43k trail race. Hoping to do a 6h run on Sunday up to Aizkorri to see a bit of the race...
Crumbs!! June has arrived and everybody has stopped training! Just to add I managed a good but slow 14 miles and 5 ascents of Kinder on Saturday. All good apart from lack of endurance and painful ankle joint. Be back for more this coming Saturday and will aim to do a 3/4 peris horseshoe plus a swim in lake Padarn.
I’m still here...!
Had a very slack 10 days or so due to illness and work commitments.
Got back to it last night but nothing spectacular.... halfway through today’s double session.
Me too. Two weeks out from a marathon, been running 30k on Sundays and 50k or so midweek. Didn't make it to watch Zegama (didn't think it'd be the best use of time!) but heard the TV chopper from the next valley. Awful run btw, it was over 25º and my leg felt bad from the get go.
Been carrying a sore upper thigh/hip/groin for a week or two. Hard to pinpoint where the problem is, mobility is fine but any sort of impact is slightly painful - hopping on the spot for instance. I've got a regular physio appt coming up, hopefully shed some light.
Yep still here and training 1636km and 35,251mtrs of ascent so far this year, so hopefully be ready for August;)
Good luck with the result at the Physio bob.
Cheers John. Your post inspired me to check my YTD on strava, no wonder I'm in physio every other week!
Distance 1,058.2 km
Time 142h 7m
Elev Gain 43,262 m

Considering I'm half way through my fisrt year of running since age 12 or so, that's quite scary.
17k and 1500m on Saturday as part of sweep team for Trotternish Ridge race on Saturday. Terrible weather but fun. 10x 3mins hill repeats on Monday. Nothing today other than Love Island!
Brings back memories of my trip out on the Trotternish… Before I visited, I thought the Trotternish would be miles of easy running... how wrong I was! After Hartvaal (I think) it got tough to route find and to run at speed. The climb up Ben Dearg remains a memory so painful that I use it to spur me on in races when i'm thinking of feeling sorry for myself...
I hope the race was a success.
7 miles 3500ft yesterday, all pounded out on the treadmill at race pace... for some reason I wore a t-shirt instead of usual vest... never has an item of clothing ever been so sweaty, it was like it had been chucked in a swimming pool...
Buck Hill and the Outwoods, 36 minutes with no pain at all from my soleus muscle. Strange, since last Sunday I did an easier run and I could feel mild pain all the way round. Is it too much to hope that it will carry on behaving well?
Thanks, it was hard going with almost zero visibility but nobody got too lost. A couple of 'tourists' won. Peter Davies and Lou Roberts who I think are DPFR and Ambleside runners.
First run up Beacon Hill since my injury three months ago. A shower started as I emerged onto the open heathland from the woods on the lower slopes. I soon felt rather under-dressed in my T-shirt and shorts. On the way down I decided not to take my usual excursion via Windmill Hill, not just because of the weather but also to protect my calf by keeping the distance down.
Yesterday. Llanberis to Snowdon summit in driving wind and rain. Then down PYG track to junction with Crib Goch path. Up Crib Goch and along ridge to Crib y Ddysgl. Up to Snowdon summit again. Jog backdown to Llanberis. What a wet day. But Snowdon was heaving. I asked the question several times on the way down, watching the soaked souls going up. What kind of person would want to climb Snowdon on a day like today?!
A solid start to the week with 8 miles and 3400ft in a very hot and sweaty gym.
Hopefully back to the club tomorrow with a track session.
Still carrying a sore upper thigh/hip, physio tomorrow. Went out for an easy run 11km/800m Sunday, but that's been it since last Monday.
It does ease off after a while, half hour or so. Doesn't affect climbing but my already crap descending is suffering. Racing (in theory) on Sunday so the plan is to rest it completely until then to give it the best chance, though that means I'm going into it on almost no running for two weeks.
Luckily, 600mg Ibuprofen is over the counter in Spain ;)

First club session for a few weeks last night...
Track session... 8 x 500m with 90seconds rest... was a slightly more relaxed session than usual, as quite a few are racing tonight, and the torrential rain meant it was more a case of just get out there and get something done. So an ideal comeback session for me.
Total of 7 miles, of which 2.5 were effort.
I’ve been talked into racing for the club on Sunday.... a track 3000metres! Have never raced on the track before so will be interesting.... there was also the opportunity to do the 3000 steeplechase but I turned that down as I don’t really want to end up face down in the water jump...
Wet weather session, ie in Gym!
Stepper. 45 mins and 253 floors climbed which I think is about 2530 feet. very hot and sweaty.
My above mentioned stair-climber session topped out at 50 minutes and 3400ft.
Kept it steady and consistent, rather than my usual tactic of putting in some hard intervals. Still an incredibly hot and sweaty session.... partly due to it being my 6th session of the week, but probably more to do with the Chicken Jalfrezi I’d had two hours before.
Tomorrow’s plan is to hit double figures in slower, steadier, and flatter miles.
Today went as planned. 16 miles 1300ft, all steady except for perhaps a couple of miles where I ran hard to stretch the legs out.
Already hit 40 miles/10000ft for the week, so everything else will be a “bonus”.....
A very tough treadmill hill session this morning.... 3150ft in an hour.
That’s my last toughie of the week, just a few steady miles now to get fresh for Sunday’s 3000m.
May also have to run a leg in the 4 x 400m relay, approx half hour after finishing the 3000....
I was asked if I wouldn’t mind chucking a javelin but I turned that one down straight away!
Track race today in the Midland League. 3000m.
10:48 and 8th out of 9. Didn’t know what to expect, having never done a track race before. Did the first 200m in about 37secs (which I think is around 9:15 pace!) but luckily there was a clock at the finish line so I quickly corrected this.
On the final three laps I knew 10:50-10:55 was in the bag barring a disaster, and it was just a case of what I could do to get under that.
What interested me most is that 10:48 is bang on 18mins pace for 5km, which is my Parkrun target for the end of the year. So I’ve got to hold that kind of pace for a further 2km.
Capped off a good week of training... 53 miles and 14500ft.
