Edale Skyline Fell Race

Well done to all the runners yesterday, I was one of the marshalls at top of Jacobs ladder along with my wife who I had dragged up there because she complained I don't take her out very often. Hope all the runners who dropped out at our checkpoint were all ok, it did get a bit hectic and they had to wait a while before we got them down. ps my wife Jill did not kill me she admitted that night that she enjoyed it. Can't wait for next year.

Yes, I think theres a case for picking up litter of others on the hill whether on race day or later. 20 packets on a windy wild day out of a field of 400 may be pretty good. A few who couldn't really be bothered to look after their litter and a few who knew nothing about the mess they left behind. Someone behind or on a training run picks it up on their behalf and rightly gives them some stick on here as a reminder.

Indeed - in this case I decided a few years ago that it's better to do something instead of just moaning, so I try and pick up one piece of rubbish every time I'm out in the hills. Once I went mad and picked up everything I could find from the top of Shining Tor, and another time I removed bit by bit the whole of a shattered road cone from the track at the top of Cumberland Clough. I found one gel packet recceing for Edale. They're the worst litter as they fill up with water mixed with sticky gel...

When I've left water I've stuck a note on it saying e.g. "Please don't move this. I've left it here this morning and I'll be picking it up later today (Sunday 19th March 2007)." with my name, address & tel number.

A number of runners handed in empty gell packs to me as they went passed, these were disposed of properly, It must have been quite tough holding on to them with cold hand so well done to those runners. I understand that the sweep runners picked up bits and pieces that they found on route also.

I'm going out that way on Thursday to see if I can find any other litter, Hats, gloves, jackets...that might have been blown off while racing (mine included)

Disposing of your own litter on the hills simply calls for 2 things:

1. The will to do it - which one would hope the vast majority of runners who venture out on to the hills would have

2. A sensible plan to stash one's own liiter - for example, don't fully rip the tops off gel packets - leave them partially attached; tuck used gel sachets up the long sleeve of a tight fitting top; only take a gel just before a CP so the litter can be left with a marshall (thank you) etc. etc.

None off this is 'rocket science' but a sensible 'litter plan' should be a pre-requisite of going out onto the hills as much as map, compass etc.
