yes, 98% of competitors seem to hoist themselves along the fence
looks like a giant catipillar going up the hill:D
i foolishly opted for a different path last year, thinking I might overtake a few and avoid the logjam....didn't realise that it puts alot more strain on the body not having a 'handrail' to assist...lesson learnt for me:D

Good question! I was wondering that and asked before, but got some confusing answers...
So, those who have done it before, what tyre did you use, what do you prefer and why? :)

Cheap as chips, used em last year, no punctures, John Rawnsley used em for years and so did Jebby, the extra few grams weight will not slow you down as much as many flats;)

Have a check on the rules/equipment section of 3pcx forum - I'm sure I have seen somwhere that max width allowed is 35mm...............

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Question for the CX experts...
If you were building a bike up from scratch would you build it with both cross top brake levers and STI's, or just stick with the STI's ?
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Yes, both
but not a CX expert!
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
I'd say both.... made a massive difference for me on the Three Peaks and on more traditional cross races. Also surprisingly nice to have on the bike if you're using it as a winter trainer on the road.

Both, only cost me 15 quid extra to have em on, gives the paws a rest;)

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
i reckon experts wouldn't have 'em...( how can you go fast in a race sitting so upright and in a non aggressive position )
got them on mine though:D
one thing though, if you ride your cx bike alot and also your road bike...you can find yourself going for non existent brakes on the road bike....weird:(
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
I have them and used to use them to give my hands/arms a rest on descents... Now I have discovered that descending on the drops is the way forward... so I hardly ever use them now...
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Got 'em on mine - one reason: Pen Y Ghent.

Most of the top Belgium cross riders use bar-tops.... being aero etc isn't really an issue when you're plugging through mud, snow and sand.

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
ofcourse aero is important
why have drop bars and not flat mtb bars ?
why do fit mtb riders get slaughtered in cx races ?
why have deep section wheels
lycra ?
etc etc
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
many euro cx races average speeds quite a bit over 20mph !

not when compared to road or track riding. Drops are there to give a variety of hand positions and to give the option of getting low for any road sections or some like to descend on them. However, most cross riding is done on the hoods or bar-tops. MTB riders tend to get slaughtered because they lack the pure road speed, the courses aren't technical enough for their skills to shine through and they lack the mount/dismount skills. Deep section wheels are stronger with less spokes and so catch less crud. They also track better through deep mud and sand as it doesn't get over the rim and force the spokes to break through it.

so it's still very important then, as aero is critical in those disciplines;)
come on...''variety of hand psoitions'' races last an hour plus a lap...it's not stage racing
why the penchant for skinsuits ?
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
I find I have the best control descending when on the drops... both in handling the bike and in stopping power, i.e. hand position on the brakes...
I treated myself to RED brakepads for 3 Peaks last night :D

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
"most cross riding is done on the hoods or bar-tops"
these two positions are very different
Having watched every World Cup CX race for the last 3 years I'd say a more accurate statement, imo, would be 'most cx racing is done on the hoods or drops'
-
Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
having said the above...the only photos I have of myself from cx races I have my hands on the tops and am powering through mud:o
but then, I'm a rank amateur:D
and have cross top levers:)

I tend to be on the tops when climbing up something steep but not very technical... rest of the time, I tend to be on the drops mostly as I find it gives me more control...
But going really steeply donwhill on the drops is somewhat scary, as if I am about to be launched over the handlebars head first...
I have no idea what other poeple do, I only just started riding a cross bike off road and just do what makes me feel most confident...

Re: 3 Peaks CX entry list on l
Whichever bike I am on I am rarely on the drops - don't like the feeling, much prefer the hoods. Each to their own.

I think that what it really boils down to and that Tri and I got a bit off topic;)
Bar-tops give you a nice option but it's all about personal preference.... with regards to skin-suits, that's just kinkiness:D
