West side of the beck is the best side to be on, drop off just after the worst of the crags. Would be quite easy with good vis but I wouldn't know about that!Quote:

Seconded. It was quite surreal and dramatic climbing Catstye with the mist forming wispy trails and then up into the cloud for Helvellyn. This is the first time I've been up Helvellyn. Not much of a view! The marshall who told me that St Sundays Crag was a 'piece of cake' was possibly contravening the trades description act.Quote:

Managed the double, Helvellyn tri today. Ok I was 262 out of 500-600 so very very happy with that.

Is this route only permissible on the race day?
As I didn't want to trespass and risk any ill feeling from the land owner I headed up Grisedale and found a foot bridge near Broomhill Plantation and then doubled back.
On race day you enter the field by the barn and wade accross the river, personally i'd rather have gone down to the first bridge but there would have been walls to jump over after. The route is the route at the end of the day.

It's not a right of way - hence the sign.
Acces on race day only... you did the right thing, as your principle was right.
But that particular farmer is usually quite understanding to a lone fellrunner.

Those not doing the Ben and / or Shelf moor - anyone having a run as I am tempted despite being up for Shelf moor the following day. Anyone got any insider tips re terrain / navigational conundrums.
hi manhar - i hope to be doing this - I did it a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it - its long - but not too long - if you know what I mean! i distinctly remember a big climb at the end! I need to dig the map out and look at the route again to be honest - but with good weather forecast - we could even be going for a dip in the lake after!?
Also thinking of doing this one. Some discussion of route off St Sunday Crag here and a GPS plot here but the closest to a list of CPs I can find is the Achille Ratti site description "The first top is Catstye Cam followed by Helvellyn, Dollywaggon, Grisedale Tarn and then St Sunday Crag. The return journey is via Grisedale Beck to Hole in the Wall and back to Glenridding Village Hall". Does anyone have a GR for Hole in the Wall as my OS has it at 360155 - nowhere near where said GPS track appears to go ...
A great race! One of the few Lakes race that isn't like a trip round Ikea!
All the route is pretty straight forward apart from the route of St Sundays, just make sure you have good grip on your shoes!
And the last climb is a killer!
The Hole in the Wall on your OS map isn't the same hole in the wall that you go through on the race, the GPS plot that you've posted looks pretty spot on to me.
Is there a list of check points anywhere??
Thinking of doing this as an alternative to the DNS Great North Swim.
Perhaps a dip at Glenridding after would be appropriate??

As you can see from the post above, its comedy night in Glenridding.
Just sitting in the hotel supping coffee and overlooking Ullswater, looking beautiful, blue sky, sunshine, does it get better.
Up for this tomorrow, and remembering from last year, the final climb is character building. Helvellyn Tri on Sunday, the September double, could be my first ever tri in nice weather, I'm gagging!
Apparently due to Great North swim cancellation, there's a few rooms at the Best Western Glenridding hotel this weekend.
Look out for the Tod Harrier.

That GPS trail is mine. Things to note on that are the wobble as I nearly returned along Striding Edge (Helvellyn was in cloud), and I took a very poor line of St Sunday Crag, leaving the descent until far too late. I'd really like to find the scree this year.Quote:
