Being chased by dogs

I had a discussion about this very thing with a dog owner recently. I took the kids to our local park, staff/cross comes running up barking, so I told it 'To get out out of it' and to 'clear off' the dog owner then told me, 'It's a public park he's allowed off his lead' to which I replied 'your dog has come running up to me barking, I have two small children in my car' he walked off, as he did I also politely reminded him he should have his dog under control in a public place. What I would have liked to do is kick his and his dogs backsides around the park to remind them that public places are for everyone and not just him and his dog. My wife has encountered him a number of times, whilst out with our 18 month old daughter and labrador. She says she finds it unnerving the way the dog runs up to the push chair barking. I've advised her to report him to the police if it happens again.

Common theme...its the owners not the dog. There's no accounting for d*ckheads. The law should state that owners must be on a lead at all times.

I agree no excuse for the behaviour described above.. but the other side of the coin is that responsible dog walkers dohave equal rights to use a public space. As a childless dog owner i am constantly irritated by the apparent sense of entitlement of those with children that the rest of us have to put their needs ahead of our own. I rarely use public parks as it happens but when i do i am considerate of others, pick up poo etc etc and yet have to put up with no end of hassle from the protective pushchair brigade. Isn't it enough that i have to keep paying their child benefit out of my taxes?!

I'm sure some runners mistake friendly dogs trotting up to say hello as dogs 'chasing them' sometimes. My collie has never chased anyone but me, when I leave him for dust :), but has wagged his tail and said hello to loads of walkers and runners. His only memorable faux pas was as a puppy when he ran into the arms of a complete stranger... just after he'd been rolling in fox poo. She was a dog lover though and took it well :)

You can make do with the plastic ones, they tend to break into shards which is handy.

On slight tangent about dog owners clearing up mess. Was driving home yesterday and had the unpleasant sight of an old lady clearing up her dog's mess by throwing it into a farmer's field. Responsible in she was clearing it up, not so nice, it was being thrown in the field, quite hideous that she was NOT wearing any gloves whilst doing so (and yes, deliberate capitals!!).
It was a bit of a conversation stopper!!!!!

Good thinking Hank, I'm rather taken by this option. I would imagine that were one to encounter an insurgent cell of radicalised dogs, throwing the child to them would allow a swift get away. Tough love but we have to look at the bigger picture.

On a serious note this is an utterly stupid thread. I've been bitten a couple of times in 20 years, I should have stopped and asked is it OK to run through, they should have had more control. In the scheme of things it's nowt. Why don't we have a row about slippery steep bits- now they can really hurt.

I got a dog to fend off other dogs, but he's useless for running with, he likes to sniff things stop and wee every few yards, even on the fells. I've had to resort to slowing down again when I see dogs, (never a bad thing in my book, slowing down that is)

Bitten last Monday (again). Also had a bit of a to do whilst out running with Ogden Nomad when a dog owner refused to get hold of his dog as we approached/ran past. In Calderdale there is a by-law that states a dog owner must put their dog on a lead if asked to do so by anyone, anywhere.
When bitten by a Weimaraner last year I'm afraid I gave it a punch on the nose....but I didn't knife it, bite it back or roundhouse kick it into the following week.

They're pretty chunky things weimaraners. I don't think one would notice much if I punched it on the nose.

I don't know, a dogs nose is supposedly the most sensitive part of it's body. A dog doesn't see like a person, they have very poor eyesight in comparison to our own, the third dimension and the way a dog sees is to use it's nose. That's why the spend so much time with their noses stuck up another dog's backside and sniffing trees and corners and grass and fence posts and anything that happens to have had a dog pass by in the last century.
Oh and why do they spend so much time rolling in fox poo, it must be like crack to them, every time mine does it he gets hosed down, next day goes back does the same.

Don't agree with that. Just because someone doesn't like dogs I would have to put my dog on the lead? Even though my dog isn't aggressive? By the way dogs can be more aggressive on leads as they feel vulnerable. My dog gives most humans and other dog a wide berth so why should I punish him by putting him on a lead. Don't tar all dogs with the same brush I say. So glad I don't walk my dog in public parks.

So you expect people to evaluate the risk a dog poses to them on first sight. based on what? I'd rather people just kept them under control, and I think that is a pretty sensible rule in the main. recently I have had a face of with a Rottweiler and bitten by a very unassuming Labrador cross. In each case the owner was very defensive about their dogs behavior.

In my opinion I shouldn't have to make that decision, if your in a place where there are other people, you should be forced by law to have it on a lead.

I think I can break down my dog encounters as follows

40% super friendly would really like to play
40% friendly, will say hello and then be on their way
15% indifferent, maintains a sensible distance
4% nervous, distinctly unhappy at my presence
1% aggressive

I've only ever been caught out twice by dog behaviour where I misjudged the dog. On both occasions the dogs behaviour was clearly driven by fear.

Sounds like my social interactions with the ladies as a young man. Although the first figure may be a little (very) high.

Lots of differing opinion on here some a tad hysterical :-O some perfectly reasonable. We have two dogs and it's not often we have to walk them where there are a lot of public. Our border collie doesn't even want to say hello, to her no one exists but me, MrRTS and her tennis ball. If we are in public and we see bikes or runners we call down and she lies down. Not moving till we tell her. She is never on a lead as she really doesn't need one. Now, the other side of our coin - our chocolate lab. She loves everyone and wants to charge at everyone to say hi. We totally understand that to the unwary seeing a big chocolate lump bouncing towards you at full throttle is a bit unsettling so if on paths where there is a lot of people we keep her on a lead. She really can't stop herself going daft. She doesn't bark or show aggression though.
It can be a problem if we are somewhere quiet and walkers or runners suddenly appear and Tia sees them before us. Then it's a case of chasing after her shouting "she doesn't bite!".
We adore our girls and we want them to enjoy their life and the outdoors as much as the anyone else. Live & let live is my motto :thumbup:

me and my other half both like dogs and are comfortable around them,but we have both been bitten by dogs,just a frendly bite but resulting in us both having bruised legs and having to spend hours in the hospital having treatment,plus having to pay for treatment.plus our next door neighbours kids who are both under the age of 10 were playing football in the field when a dog came bounding over chasing the ball and knocked the youngest boy over,resulting in him being scared stiff of dogs and not wanting to play in the field,the dog was only being playfull,but i think if you are in a public place keep your dog on a lead,but if out in the country side as long as it is not aggresive let it run free.

But youd have thought for just the short period of the race people would keep their dogs out of the way.. so many have stepped across me on a lead.. long spindly leads, you'd just snap the dogs neck.. scares the hell out of me.

I do like the dog thread always a good laugh. It has to be said as forums go this is pretty dull, after all what is there to say? Which cagoule? .... oh I don't know, what is your favourite colour? just get the cheapest who cares.

I've had that a few times, generally running on the street with a group in the dark, dog on one side of the pavement, owner on the other, thin (invisible in the dark) piece of cheese wire connecting them, it's never happened but a shitzu/owner bolas doesn't bear thinking about :D

I have seen the error of my ways.

I've just done a 3 mile time trial on trails and encountered an aggressive looking dog (mean little f*cker!). As it was disrupting my chance for a PB I was preparing to give it a swift kick to the side before heading on. Then I looked at the owner, cheap little chav, giving it the big "I am".

I remembered the wise words from here and decided to drop kick the owner instead. He wasn't badly hurt but I did give a chuckle as I ran away with his cap. Disciplining owners is much more fun than attacking dogs - I apologise for my previous stance.

I wouldn't be seen dead in a bum bag! I always (no longer now I have seen the error of my ways) just carry it in my hand in case of emergency. I've fought some big buggers in the ring but none make me as nervous as getting bitten by a dog.

Interesting thread this, with themes ebbing and flowing, and much of it comes to this: if we accept dogs will be around people we must balance reasonable freedom for dogs and their owners with reasonable freedom for others to enjoy the big outdoors. All dogs on leads or muzzled everywhere is unlikely and no doubt extreme, so we will have some risk of attack for people but owners must step up because the freedom of a dog comes with teeth. I own a beagle and she loves to run off lead and if we have the patience to wait for her to come back we do that but always try to watch out for situations where even a soppy beagle may cause offence. Speaking of fences, my only really bad experience with dogs was four american bulldogs at 8 stone each who leapt their garden fence to attack said beagle, then me, on a public footpath. The owner followed, and between us we wrestled in a scrum of teeth and mud until my dog limped off with her life intact, just, and us two humans ended up in A&E with over 100 wounds between us. Bigger fences, smaller dogs, better luck ... I dunno. two of dogs were put down and his insurer paid us. Scars faded, at least I have a good pub anecdote to show for it!
