No, exactly the reason to adopt an avoidance and report strategy and try to educate irresponsible dog owners. Seriously, try and take on a large and aggressive dog and, even with a knife, even if you get a chance to get it out, you will come off worse.

There are unfortunately an awful lot of irresponsible dog owners. It's a problem if you own dogs too as our two, when on leads, have been set on by other dogs off the lead. This led to our younger dog becoming extremely anxious and protective of our older dog and my wife and it's only with a lot of work on our part that we've settled him back down. My wife now carries a sonic zapper with her for this purpose and it certainly makes her feel better.

If you know and regular encounter aggressive dogs or out of control on Public Rights of Way and the owners won't listen to reason, report them to the police.

Wormstone and I were cycling around Keilder Forest a few years ago. To the left of the track was a forest road and I noticed a range rover parked up and a big f***** stood smoking, he had two Staffordshires off the lead and of course they started chasing us. Somehow one got between us and it meant that Wormstone was cycling as fast as I have seen her do. One of the Staffs got tired after a mile, but I must admit I was so annoyed I cojoled the remaining one to carry on chasing about for 4 miles (then it dropped dead, only joking) but I think the big f***** probably went through a lot of cigs by the time it got back, if it ever did.

Of course I have been chased many times by our own dog but I don't think that counts does it?

What size spork? You get the tea spoon size ones (that'd get in the nooks and crannies), right up to the big old serving spoon type ones... they'd do some serious damage.

I have a collection of various sized ones. I use number 2 in the UK for dogs, cornered badgers and people.

When I treked across Greenland, I went for the size 4, for polar bears. This would also do for a rhino attack.

The largest one is reserved for when I surf and sea-kayak. This one's good for great whites and killer whales, although I've never yet tried it on a full pod. Potentially, I'd have to carry two if that ever happened.

Seriously - you're going to carry a pen/pocket knife, which will be in the pocket of your daysack/bumbag, then, while you're rolling around on the ground with an angry dog hanging off your arm you're going to dig around in said pocket, retrieve knife, unfold blade and then do exactly what damage with the sub 3" (and therefore not illegal) blunt blade...? Or do you carry a John Rambo knife on a belt, ready to be drawn at a moment's notice (in which case highly illegal)...?

I was "taken down" by an uncontrolled terrier when I was training on my cross bike, a month before an 8 day MTB stage race and my main focus for that year, resulting in a torn rotator cuff that took 6 months to heal properly, with fortnightly physio. The dog was accompanied by a young girl, c12-13 yo, who tried calling it back. It's not the dogs that are the problem, as with most things, it's the visible, and significant, minority of irresponsible owners who seem to think they can abrogate responsibility and lay the blame on the doorstep of anybody else but themselves...

Yep - turned out tp be the ideal present for my caggie handed wife.

I have the titanium one - a far more robust item and especially recommended for fending off ferocious canines.
