I was marshaling at the Canalathon yesterday, there was a guy doing the 75km race who had done the 52 mile Cheshire Ultra the day before, not fell running but mental/awesome (delete where applicable) achievement.

Well it's Easter this weekend with 4 days holiday so it's a great opportunity for Fishwicking.
Come on Daz (or anyone else for that matter) - how many can you pack into this weekend ?
(I don't expect you to reply until at least Tuesday, as I'm sure you'll be spending all your time planning/ travelling / racing
Hi Mark
It seems that there's not that much on this weekend fell race wise. I'm tempted with the new Howgills race, it looks a beast.
From Four is a cracking race Daz.
Views from the tops ar spectacular.
Didn't see you amongst the masses at Rivvi Pike Daz ~ hope you had a good run at Howgills.
Did a good triple this weekend. Three Peaks Saturday, Arant Haw Sunday and Wray Caton Moor today!
Had a good run at Three Peaks. Had a better run at Wray than at Arant Haw, I wonder if there is any sports science behind this?!!
I think there may be some science involved. I've done Arant Haw after the Peaks and it's tough. I don't think the Arant Haw course allows you to properly loosen off your already tired muscles, you're into a long climb so soon from the start.....legs still heavy.
Even though Wray has it's moments it allows your legs to stretch out over the undulating terrain.
Science or not...beltin weekend
it is said that if you want to have a good race, do one the day before. I always did better on day 2 in mountain marathons.
Did 4th race in 5 days today at Lothersdale which was my 25th race of 2017! Don't reckon I'll get to 100 like Darren but I should manage at least 50 this year!
Hi Will
It looks like you've the racing bug.
A word of warning: it can become very addictive. Here's a run down of my last few years-
2010- 42 races 5 fell
2011- 86 races 64 fell
2012- 101 races 91 fell
2013- 126 races 121 fell
2014- 115 races 113 fell
2015- 102 races 95 fell
2016- 119 races 101 fell
2017- 38 races 30 fell
Go smash the 100 mate.
Well done Will - you've got your mojo back.
Where were you last night 'sticks? Thought we might see you at Lothersdale
Looks like 2013 was your biggest year. I actually got to 50 races that year (mostly fell) but I don't think I had reached 25 races by May in 2013.
Not sure whether it's possible for me to do 100 as I work Saturdays and have to book holidays around the big races I want to do! I race most Sundays but won't be able to do many doubles.
Haven't done any Parkruns yet this year but my hours might be changing to a 12pm start on Saturdays so I could do a Parkrun before work! Can they be added to my total?
Yes I don't want to start racing for the sake of it. Might have a weekend off this week as Accrington doesn't really inspire me!
I met a Fishwicker today from way back when 'wicking didn't even have a name - Dick Ballantine. Dick was once described as a "race tart", on here, which is now a compliment in my view, even is it wasn't then. We had a grumble that we were old and soft before he explained he was on his way home from an 88k off road bike ride (on an Inbred with carbon forks). Keep on keeping on y'all . . .
“But to say that the race is the metaphor for the life is to miss the point. The race is everything. It obliterates whatever isn’t racing. Life is the metaphor for the race.”
I had a similar feeling when I finished in front of Ben Abdelnoor in the Fairfield Horseshoe one year, only to find out he'd done the Keswick Triathlon a couple of hours earlier :-)
We were discussing clashes for races next year at our club committee meeting and came across a combo even Daz may not be up for.
Saturday 10th March - Haworth Hobble 31.7 miles/4396ft
followed by
Sunday 11th March - Edale Skyline 21.1miles/4505ft
Over to you Daz
Dan :p
I won't do this in 2018, but these two races seem to crop up on the same weekend most years, and I'm hoping to do the "double" in 2019 as part of prep for something long distance later that year.
Last weekend I did League XC on the Saturday, then Cardington Cracker on the Sunday, if that counts. It was certainly tough... first couple of miles on the Cracker I was barely above jogging pace, picked up on the steeper stuff, but definitely lacked a lot of zip over the flatter sections.
Where does that rank compared to Wasdale on the Saturday followed by Holme Moss on the Sunday, which Daz did a few years ago.
Hobble / Skyline lighter, more runnable option but then Daz is getting older 😀
When the Duddon Fell Race was started, it was part of a two-day event: 18-mile fell race on the Saturday, 15-mile orienteering event on the Sunday. There was only one year that I did both, but many people regularly did both.
Also in that part of the world, Muncaster used to be the day after Ennerdale (at least in some years), and many people did both. Given that Muncaster had such a poor attendance this year, they could try again putting it on the Sunday following a nearby Saturday race, to make it worthwhile for people to travel to West Cumbria for a weekend from far away. If they want it in Spring, maybe the day after Black Combe or Eskdale Elevation?
Whats your total to date Darren please?
Total number of Slayer t-shirts?
I've had a couple of attempts at Fishwicking this year. Most examples have involved cross-country on the Saturday, followed by a Sunday fell race. This is at least as tough a double-fell weekend, as everyone who does XC will probably verify.
My one attempt at a Fell double went well... the traditional Weasdale Horseshoe/Sedbergh Hills double. A top ten finish at Weasdale, followed by a time I'd have been happy with at Sedbergh even if it wasn't the 2nd race of the weekend.
The first time I tried it, at the end of 2017, I was petrified of the stiff feeling in my legs, and I think it got into my head. But my few attempts this year have taught me not to be scared of it.
Got a couple of tough weekends coming up.... an XC/Trigger double, followed closely by an XC/Long Mynd Valleys double.
A bit light on Darrens adventures?
Is everything ok and how is the every event in the calendar book coming on?
Daz did a PBR recently which probably explains the absence (unless he doubled up with the Ramsey the next day!)
I did two races in 17 hours this weekend.... Friday evening the Snowdon Twilight, followed by the Holyhead Mountain Saturday lunchtime... as always, hard work to fit two short sharp races (each taking an hour, give or take a few mins) so close together... the stifling heat probably added to the issues...
The main issue I had was having no appetite after the first race, feeling pretty rough after a hard race in such heat... was difficult to fuel myself for the second race... even after a visit to the chippy in Holyhead, and a massive supper, I’m ravenous today...
My wife has (unintentionally) got herself into teams for two tennis matches on the same day, an over-60's match tomorrow morning and a match for her club's 6th team in the evening. I explained to her that in fell running parlance this is called "fishwicking".
For myself, the nearest I get to fishwicking these days is a 7-day gap between races. I've entered Black Rocks for tomorrow, after doing the Windmill race last Wednesday.
I have the unenviable possibility of potentially having to do 3 track races in 2.5hrs on sunday... steeplechase, 1500, 5000... due to a shortage of available clubmates.... hopefully it won't come to this but the outlook is not good!
A minor bit of Fishwicking for me this weekend. First occasion I have done three timed runs in a weekend. Skipton Parkrun on Saturday morning got me an S in the Parkrun A - Z. In the evening I did the 5k Donor run as part of the British Transplant Games - I'm a platelet donor. Huge event with loads of runners/joggers/walkers, many in fancydress. Then on Sunday morning I did the Rougemont Chase as part of the Weeton Show. Managed to still beat Antonio!
