Come on... tea and a cake after the race
I was promised bad weather!!

Re: lothersdale fell race
Will you thank George for his help - a really nice lad.
I spoke to him quite a bit about fellrunning, didn't realise at the time that it was his first fellrace, but he certainly enjoyed it.
Had loads of help from juniors, esp in the kitchen. Great bunch of kids!!

Re: lothersdale fell race
I enjoyed marshaling last night and a chance to watch the junior races. Great to see some talented youngsters having fun
Ram Tam was on good form too in the Front Room after the race ;)

Re: lothersdale fell race
Thanks Brett - your tactics of putting people off didn't seem to be very successful!

Re: lothersdale fell race
Thanks for the positive comments about the photos!
Bob is correct on the technical side of things, I was using a Canon 1D3 with a 70-200 f2.8 lens set wide open using mostly the 80-100mm focal length. It was pretty dark!
As for Al Fowler's request I will have a look at the details for the Winter Hill Fell Race - coincidentally I am crossing darkest Lancashire on Sunday to go to the rugby at St Helens so I'll see how the times match up.

Dave was using a Canon DSLR, not sure of the model - I was trying to race! A digital compact camera uses a lens with a very short focal length due to the small sensor sizes used, typically 5 - 15mm. On a 35mm SLR these would be extreme wide angles with huge depth of field so everything appears in focus. Dave would have been using a zoom around 50 - 100mm so there is less depth of field hence the background appearing fazed.
Do you think he was using fill in flash as well Bob?;)

Steep start up a rocky track then turns into a steep boggy grass hill, run off the top through a gate turn left down a steep farm track then up through some fields until you hit pinhaw where the climbing isnt too bad more gradual runnable the odd steeper bit then turn at pinhaw summit and straight back. Great route it is fast if dry so hope it rains in time..:p

Re: lothersdale fell race

Re: lothersdale fell race
Is it the route that follows Knot Gill up on the eastern side to Knot Farm, Then up to Pinhaw via Sunny Side? There is also a route on the western side of Knot Gill if not.

No, it starts at the east end of the village and goes up the bridleway running north before dropping down to Tow Top Farm then heads NW to join up with the Pennine Way. It then follows the PW to Pinhaw and returns via the same route.
I have never been on either of the two paths you mention but they appear to have quite a few stiles which isn't good for a race. I haven't seen the markers for the upper path on to Pinhaw - I'll have to check this out.
Brett, I should be available for marshalling on this.
-
Re: lothersdale fell race
Excellent - but only if you come back to the New Inn for a beer and some food!

Re: lothersdale fell race
Not sure If i will be there as I may be in London and if not it is the first of the summer X series at Oakbank school Keighley, so I am torn between the two.
If I do make it rest assured I shall complete it fully dressed this time.
-
Re: lothersdale fell race
Shame about the clash isn't it AS? I was fancying a go at Oakbank but I'll be at Lothersdale instead now. You doing any others in the summer series?

Just got in from running this and it isn't as good as the actual course. Steep but short grassy fields to the halfway road then you have to go round a blind bend on this before heading up a concrete track to Sunny Side then a couple more fields of short grass gets you onto the fell. This is a mixture of large tussocks and bog and isn't very nice :( I ran back along the normal course.
Also, the ground is bone dry, even the really boggy bit has nearly dried up.

I'm sure it'll get rainy again before raceday. Paul the weatherman's predicting a lovely dose of so'westerlys for next week.

Re: lothersdale fell race
I won't be running tommorrow as my knee's relapsed a bit and it's got to settle properly. Brett, if you're short of marshals PM me otherwise i think a gentle bike ride is on the cards. :(
