It will only be a matter of time Daz, before he is racing a bike again ;)
And no, not had the pleasure of meeting Donkey yet... Three Peaks CX perhaps?
Anyways, it s glosrious weather, I am not working today AND I am not racing tomorrow... So I am off out for a long ride... I may be some time... :)
Took about 4.5 hours to do 80 miles, whihc included a fair bit of climbing, as well as an off road section :-O and that was after the rainstorm drenching us, so the trails were nice and muddy. Was fun though, especially slipstreaming Mr Cancellara on his motorised bike :)
Just over 1.5 hours easy today... well, it rained and it was very windy and there were some hills again, as I can't really avoid them here unless I rode up and down a short stretch of A465 all the time... Strangely enough, enjoyed it, although feeling a tad tired after yesterday.
Daz, you thoughts on this: just got told off for going for a ride longer than 2 hours, as apparently I don't need to, because I never really race for longer than 2 hours, so this has only made me tired and blunted my legs...
I don't agree, as I have as my end of season aim Three Peaks CX, so although my first aim is the track champs in Italy in August, I would like to tick over some endurance in the background for Three Peaks... Yes, my races are shorter, but longe easy rides are needed to keep a nice base mileage ticking over. If you do short and fast all the time you burn out??? I think it is a misconception that you need to go fast in training to go fast in races... I have much more benefit from steady miles with the odd bit of speedwork thrown in... but am currently racing myself fit by doing short circuit races :) These are for training and fun, and by no means a target... I have started doing sprint intervals to improve my speed on the track though, which seems to be working :) So, have I ruined my training by going for a long ride yesterday?
Oh you got told off.
I wouldnt ever tell anyone off whether it be a short, long or any ride. Telling anyone off doesnt install anything positive in a persons mind.
If your planning to do the three peaks then your not just doing anything over 2 hrs. Your going to be riding longer than that so yes well done on your ride.
If your doing the three peaks id have thought a 2 hr ride with 2 hrs of running uphill on top with your bike on your shoulder would be better.
I suppose its diff to do both track and the three peaks and road racing etc etc etc. Its not diff to just enter lots of events and get round them. But if you specialise and really apply yourself at one type of event then your going to get better. Maybe thats what the person who told you off meant but couldnt tell you like i have.
Question is are you a trackie or a roadie or a three peaker.
Daz, I am a trackie until after 10 & 11 August, when I will be a Three Peaker... In the meantime, the races I do are for fun and as part of training... A 45 minute circuit race is excellent training for a points race, and a 10 mile club TT is treated as pursuit practice... i.e. I start it as if I am doing a 2km pursuit and ride the first 2 kms as if I am riding a 2 km pursuit, then finish the rest of the TT as speedwork... It wasn't my friend who is coaching me who told me off, it was several other friends who also ride and race TT's... I find that 'testers' find it very hard to understand you can have benefit from a longer ride, if all you ever want to do is spend loads of money on expensive kit to try get faster on a 10 m TT... OK, rant over LOL
Last season I was always encouraged to go out for a longer (4-5 hr) ride on the rare occasions I wasn't either racing or working a weekend, as it is good to just head out on the bike at a steady pace and enjoy oneself... If it is always training or racing, you get a bit stale...
first ride out on my road bike for a while, 38 miles of hilly roads in a little over 2hrs (with a 45min swim beforehand). Now time for physio prescribed stuff!
Rode the Dragon Ride in South Wales yesterday. I only completed the medium 70 mile circuit because my Dad and I missed the cut off! It would not have been a problem if we were slow but we had to queue for an hour and a half just to start so had no chance!!! Needless to say there were lots of annoyed cyclists at the route split. I was suffering with neck pain so I can't say I minded too much!
Out of the all the sportives I've rode over these three weeks the Dragon Ride was the most hyped up with thousands taking part. But I have to say it was the worst organised and the worst route (apart from the monster 8 mile climb). If you ever fancy a sportive ride the Tour of Wessex, it's much tougher and very well organised, the scenery is beautiful. The Midland Monster was a very good ride too.
No more sportives for me but my Dad's decided to donate his old training bike to me, 10 speed Campy on a Ribble frame so it's going to be miles a plenty especially hard paced 2-3 hour rides.
Hopefully all these miles will move me up out of the middle of the pack in fell races!
I'll be trying out a cross bike tomorrow, It's been lent to me for the PPPYR. Looks a bit wierd with narrow bendy bars at the front, Hope I can reach the brakes when descending! I'll take it for a steady ride round Ladybower about 12.00 if any one wants a laugh!!
ahh, you'll do fine round Ladybower. Take it over Cut Gate as well for a proper test!!
