It was my first time at Borrowdale and I found it a real challenge. Got over the line at 4:54:54 with a smile on my face, but my legs in bits.
I'll certainly to do it again. Many thanks to the organisers and all the other competitors for great day.

Got to say, I didn't enjoy it at all.
Starting to realise it's a bit of a daft sport really, for me anyway - painfully unnatural.
The descent off Dale head was probably the least enjoyable self-inflicted 10 minutes of my life thus far. I thought it was going to be a relief to finish, but in the event it was just a very wet field on the coldest August day I can remember.
Thanks to ROs, marshalls etc but not my idea of fun anymore. Tis cycling for me from now on ...
Sorry to read that ZHR. I must confess, I stood there in that field getting wet thinking that things were a bit flat this year. More to do with me probably (I retired with a bad knee at esk Hause, ending a run of 7 enjoyable borrowdales) but I have also been reflecting about the sport. Perhaps it's just that I need to tackle lots of new races! Enjoy the cycling :-)
I was a Borrowdale virgin 'til Saturday. I really enjoyed the run; breathtaking views, breathtaking climbs, supportive fellow runners, encouraging marshalls - all in all a grand day out in the Lakes. Thanks to the runner who called out 'I don't quite like the line you're taking!' as I wombled off the top of Dale Head - you saved me a long detour and it was nicer than saying 'you're going the wrong way you idiot'. Many thanks to all the ROs for putting it all together.
I'm planning to be back next year to try and get closer to the 4 hour rather than the 5 hour mark (4.42 this time out.)

Well I thought it was ace! First time for me; I thought it was going to be a bit of a battle against the elements but the weather couldn't have been much better IMO. Fantastic route - I loved the scree descent off Scafell Pike (which I managed to miss on two recces), got a word of encouragement from Billy Bland near the start and got handed a drink by Joss Naylor going up Gable! The only not so good bit was right at the end on the flat bit, where my lack of long runs recently really hit me - I must have lost five places after the river and it was all I could do to stay ahead of a group of octogenarian holidaymakers out for a stroll.
Definitely be back next year.
Loved it! My ankle went contouring round Green Gable, and I had to walk for a bit (after taking forever to unpick all the mud and knots so I could relace a bit tighter), but when I got fed up with everyone going past and decided to give it another go I found it was alright for fast descents :) so I got a couple of places back off Grey Knotts (where I vaguely knew the way), and quite a few off Dale Head (where I didn't, so every time I overtook someone I went haring off to try and keep the next runner in sight). Did 4.55 for my first time - I'll be back. Comfortably my worst placing ever, in any race, though - I've never been further than half-way down the field before, let alone in the bottom quarter!

might've struggled in clag, but happily "followed" on the bits I didn't know (Bessyboot to Esk Hause, Gable to Windy Gap, round Grey Knotts, off Dale Head)
only fell on my @rse once on the scree descent (then lost any time I'd gained by having to stop to empty the gravel out of my shoes!)
reached Honister a massive 13 mins under cut-off :thumbup:

I won a pair of those Innovate Debrigators at the Gt Hucklow race, and I was really impressed - they actually work! Not having to empty my shoes made up a lot of time! I'll definitely use them on Jura next year.Quote:

Throwing my toys out the pram because I was convinced I would get round inside four hours this year (having run Duddon in a shade over 4 in May and done plenty of training in between) - but got nowhere near, and in fact was slower than the first time I did it in 2009 when I'd been fellrunning for all of five months.Quote:

Had a very steady run/walk all the way to Honister, upped the pace a little climbing Dale Head but then both thighs cramped up as soon as started descending. Thought I was a goner but after faffing about for a minute and some "Keep moving" advice from Chippendale (thanks Mark) I stumbled down to the Tarn and managed to run to the finish in 3.49. Really enjoyed the race, think the steady start is a must for these lakeland races then a few beers in the pub with the usual suspects from Wharfedale H. Was very lucky to find the youth hostel after circling a few fields in the dark. Will definitely be back next year. Beers on me at Viking Chase.Quote:

The main thing for me was beating the cut off and this I did by about 15 minutes. Didn't think I was going to after climbing Gable, which I found very hard going, but the run between windy gap and honister was not as long as I remembered it and again the visibility helped. Also some encouraging words from a chap from Long Eaton.
Finished in a very slow 5hr 30ish (easy to improve on next year!). Thank you to all the marshalls and organisers. It must be a bit of a pain waiting for us slow runners.
I can see why it's a lakeland classic. Felt much harder than Langdale or Three Shires.
Can there be any better feeling than descending for the last time, with the event field in sight, knowing (a) you've made it and (b) you can soon stop running!
Big thanks to scoffer and team. Great event , a classic and never fails to live up to expectations.I had to run from the bottom of the corridor route with one contact lense. Never had one come out before but after squirting a gel in my face both came out. I just managed to put the left one back in just before styhead tarn. God knows how.A couple of pieces of chocolate off joss and then back to buisness.Ive recced this a lot over the years but still small things make a huge difference. Running over the rocks was hard with only one good eye. I carry a spare but i would have lost loads of time putting another lense in. Tried in vain to catch ted mason going up dale head but he was just too fast.Have to say a big well done to the pennine runners but best of all alison brentnalls run. Very inspirational.

Great day out, despite the unpromising conditions at the start it turned out lovely - dry, clear and no wind - bit slippy underfoot. Third year doing the race, and did my best time by 19 mins, 4:19 :). Good lines off Brandreth & Dalehead kept me ahead of the good descenders, but rubbish decision to go back to Broad Crag Col rather than do the scree run! :( Room for improvement next year.
Thanks to all the organising team, sponsors & supporters. Sorry about the rather manic and vocal collie dog supporting at Styhead.
Hey, I've just got to comment on the photo of Joss shaking hands with the Helm Hill lady (post 1825#)....
... it was me!
How exciting - not only did I get to shake hands with the fell running Legend himself, but someone captured it on camera!
It was my first 'Borrowdale' and I'd been quite concerned about making the cut-off, particularly - as you might have noticed from the tape across my left knee - I'm a little injured at the moment. However, I enjoyed it and made it through Honister with 25 minutes to spare. Had to walk some of the descents to protect my knee from further damage and, like others who've posted here, I had my fair share of slips and slides on the wet grass and greasy rocks.
But I finished! And I was delighted.
This was my first Borrowdale too and I really enjoyed it - everyone was super friendly and encouraging.
I must've looked lost at one point because someone said "If you don't know the way, it's over there, and keep to the right of the tarn", very helpful :)

Drove straight to Stoke-on-Trent afterwards and didn't get cramp, result.

Thought i recognised that lady from somewhere, was on the BG leg 2 reccie last year, think it was febuary time, well done on finishing injured Leaf, it's a tough race when fully fit.
