Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A defensive buzzard "buzzed" me as I trotted along the grass verge alongside the A66 near Thelkeld.. passed about 6 inches above my head with a whoosh, but no screeching. Buzzed me 4 times to be sure I was seen off. Just made sure I kept moving... away.

I wish you'd stop bragging about all the fun you're having now you're retired.:p

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
For more years than I care to remember, I have been a regular and frequent visitor to the Lakes – weekly, twice weekly or even thrice weekly – and during that time I have covered literally thousands of miles on the fells over the length and breadth of the District. But until last night, I had never seen an eagle in the Lakes. As I started to head towards Causey Pike from Scar Crags, it took off from the crest of the ridge between the two, completely dwarfing the Peregrine that flew up to mob it, and flapped lazily off towards Buttermere. Pure magic!

Nice one.
I was discussing this the other day. As there are a few eagles in the Lakes, I would have thought I'd see them from time to time - on clear days when you can see most of the summits, but haven't yet. I'll keep looking

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
You are so lucky to have seen those stoats Mr.B and even luckier to have got pics. I'm very envious :) I do see the occasional stoat round here and it's a rare treat (as are the deer that I see more regularly).

Do they ever need their bulbs changing, and if so, how many forumites would it take?:))

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A Buzzard gave me some grief today when I was out for a walk in the Howgills. It was on Castley Knotts so I am assuming its the same one that had a peck at me last year? It didn't give me quite the same attention as last year though so it might be mellowing a bit :D

Whilst I've been in the Capital for the Olympic cycling events, it seems that there's more wildlife photography opportunites in London than there is in the Yorkshire Dales.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Young Buzzard in the woods on the far end of Otley Chevin the other night. Never seen one there before and was a little difficult to be sure in the gloom but it was a fair size with a fanned tail rather than split like a kite, and similar colouring to a buzzard so that's what I narrowed it down to.

Ah yes, suprised there isn't more talk about the Grey Seal colonies out there.
Isle of May, be a good day out for twitchers and wot not. I mainly went for the renowned Anstruther chipper, the fish supper was washed down with Moet champers. Lifestyles of the rich and famous eh

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Found a fairly complete Crows head/skull today (..plus a few other left over bits and bobs!!), our local Peregrine must have got it, along with the pigeon whos spine and legs (...including rings!?) I found the other day. Pretty pleased I do like a nice skull, and birds ones are tricky to find! Just need to get what remains of the flesh and brain cleaned out and it'll go nice in my 'skull box'!! Our lass won't have my wee collection on the mantlepeice!!..er when I say 'wee collection' I clearly mean small skull collection! :o
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
:D Nice find! I cleaned a skull by burying it in a flower pot so that the worms could do their work. Currently got a curlew in my front flowerbed and it should be ready to dig up now. It's good to know there are a few skull collectors out there. My prize possessions are a raven's skull and reindeer antler that a friend brought me back from South Georgia. The best place ever for skulls are the beaches on the outer hebrides although I have found a few round here. Latest was a blue tit and I found a lapwing on the moor.

You found a Blue Tit skull!!...and a Lapwing!! Slightly jealous here now!! I mustn't be looking hard enough! :) My mate up near Thurso has a Gannet that I'm slightly jealous of too! I've got a Kestral, Herring Gull and bits, including the bill, of a Puffin from when we were up there in May...theyre under a plastic box in the garden hopefully getting cleaned as we speak.

I'm jealous of the kestrel! haven't got any raptors. I do had a puffin though :) My friend from the Hebrides, who also collects skulls, left it rotting on my cellar steps when he came to visit so I cleaned it up and claimed it. A gannet would be good. My mum is a zoologist and she has countless skulls including a barn owl and lots of bat skeletons (she has a bat license from when she worked as a consultant ecologist). I think she may have a gannet too. I'm off to see her in a few weeks so I'll check out her collection.

Seems like there's a fair bit of skullduggery goin' on 'ere ;)
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
yes, the first one is the puffin and unfortunately I lost the colourful sheath that goes over the bill. I think it went a bit soft because I bleached that skull due to it smelling rank because my mate left it in my cellar and didn't tell me it was there! The others have been bleached by the sun or were clean when I found them.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
out on a navigation course over the weekend we saw a stoat. then tonight there's been an big Owl perched on the neigbours roof. not a barn owl, brownish but big. no prominant ears? My guess would be a tawny.
