Yes, it is!
Richard36, By 'my pacing' I meant my ability to measure distance by pacing it out while going through 'the nothings', not my speed which, as you'll have gathered from my nom de plume, is fairly slow (but capable of coming in under twelve hours I think). The steep sections on the loop section are the zigzags from Greenside YHA to the Sticks Pass and from Dunmail Raise to Grizedale Tarn.
(I see you're from D&G - I enjoyed The Merrick hill run for the first time this year - the muddiest fell race I've done!)
Ok, thanks for that DFTS
Hope you enjoyed the Merrick Hill run. I didn't do it but I've done the route a number of times. Did it last Friday and it was very muddy, so much so that I've bought myself some Inov8 Mudclaw's 272 as a step up from my X Talons.
Will probably do the TdH in my X Talons though I'm conscious there are some tarmac sections.
Looking interesting on Raise today (http://www.flickr.com/photos/raise_up_dated_pics/)
Does anyone need an entry for the Tour de Helvellyn?? Depending on whether you have the correct entry requirements......
I don't need mine, as I'm not able to do this anymore :-(( just getting back after illness..... PM me and we can sort :-)
Looks like modern art on the Raise camera at the moment.
Bad luck Fetlock.
A lot more snow hanging on than I'd expected. And the outlook for next week and beyond is for more snow and gales...
Doing the loop from Patterdale on Saturday...should be fun.
It could double as a toboggan for the descents
Hope you all enjoy this, i've had to drop out as i'm still niggled  but will hopefully meet you all as i've offered to help on the day.
Auld Ken
Sort of wish I'd entered, kind of glad I haven't!!! The over-time shift will come in for christmas mind!
shame your not running nee bother, hopefully see around on the day. im the same fjell guy im looking forward to it and yet bracing for the kicking it looks like mother nature may dish out. just need to decide on the feet setup and in ready.........ish see you all there or in the pub
Will, I would guess that crampons would only be needed if it's an icy freeze-up like it was last year. Since I've got mine now I'll be bringing them just in case, but I don't expect to use them.
Are we talking proper crampons or micro spike will and nick ? I'm even thinking of throwing a lighjtweight ice axe and goggles in boot and deciding on day, I'm using it as a training run/end of year catch up with a couple of mates so won't be racing though. Any one thinking the same or am I being over sensible ? Not used to running in snow only walking and climbing .
Goggles could be a very good idea!
snow showers right now in south lakes. even a bit of snow right outside the door.
been caught out in blizzards before and goggles are worth their weight if needed. never thought of carrying and axe for running but ians posts on another thread made intresting and sensible reading. may look at some calf langth sealskins too, but wonder if they,d be too warm for running but i suppose deep snow would be cold so.......but all this said lets hope for some white stuff next week and make it belter of a day  although its been quite sunny all day in hull.
MWIS says "Intense Atlantic lows will continue to pass close to, mainly just north of Britain over the coming week to 10 days (and probably through to Christmas), giving almost constant upland gales, and at times reaching hurricane force."
Starting with a return to 100mph winds over the Lakes from Monday night...
Just back from a recce of the loop from Patterdale. Lots of snow on Sticks and Grisedale, microspikes worn on Sticks Pass but not needed elsewhere. Remains of 2 largish avalanches on the way up to Sticks Pass that had made it as far as the path...we had to clamber over the snow and ice rubble. Strong Westerly in our faces as we topped Sticks but in our backs on the return leg. Lots of people out skiing.
If it's like that next weekend it'll be a tough day.
it may be on the thread and ive missed it but do we have a route description or any gr's yet or is it a surprise on the day ? ive found splatchers info from last year but not sure if still relavant.
Route details were emailed along with the entry form.
oh bugger never read that bit , cheers toreador .
Im in, Wanted to do this last year, but work in retail management and the Sat before christmas off is unheard of :( anyway, Im still in retail management but took a step down the peg so I get Sats of now not Sundays ;0)) so I can go!!!!!!
This year, I have done numerous events, L100, Hardmoors 110, TDS, High Peak 40, Highland Fling, Lyke Wake race, Hardmoors 55, Round Rotherham etc etc etc But I havent looked forward to any as much as this!!!!! Im praying for snow!!! Im going out to get round, no time aims except not to time out!!! and to have a bloody good time!!!!! I need this... Christmas in retail is pretty dire... This is my christmas present to myself... Sorry to go on but I didnt think Id ever get to do this with my job last year...See you there... :0))))
Recced the loop from Patterdale today and a big thaw going on. Not too much snow on Grisedale but plenty still on Sticks Pass. Saw the avalance debris that Chris H mentioned but microspikes not required today as the snow was so soft, plenty of post-holing and weak snow bridges though. If the snow melt running down the paths today re-freezes it will make things very interesting indeed!
Freezing level due to be around 600m for the next few days - sometimes lower, sometimes above the summits, so probably pretty icy by the weekend.
The main worry is the wind - how strong does it have to get before the event is called off?!
Take a look at http://tinyurl.com/c8csey5 - too soon to worry about the detail as it changes every time it's updated, but the one constant is there are some major storms on the way...
As long as the wind is not too strong this could be a great day out. Do you think its ok to buy a pie or a cake in the little shop in Glenridding on the way through :-)
T
Only if u share it tom :-)
Dont eat em all before I get there!
Only if you buy the pork pies and leave the Bakewell Tarts for me...
Weatherline's current forecast for Saturday:
Strong to gale force northwest winds with heavy showers
falling as snow to 300 metres, occasionally 100 metres.
Some shelter over southern ranges but access to most
hills will be difficult due to snowfall or blowing snow.
I'm definitely bringing the goggles and topping up on the Yorkie bars.
And for Friday: Severe gale or storm force northerly winds across the ranges with heavy snow above 300 metres and blizzard conditions. Potential for heavy and sustained snow fall over ranges coupled with blowing snow making travelling conditions and access to the hills difficult.
So there'll be some nice deep powder snow to wade through as well :D
I guarantee that you'll know what the weather will be like on the day.
I suppose you can believe anything you fancy up to then.
