Thanks both, both look good options then...
Wouldn't normally dream of questioning Bob but I was thinking the same thing. Running it for the first time this year but doesn't take long looking at the map to see a lack Dow Crag or White Pike.
Going back to original question then, what is the terrain like? I assume usual Lakeland mix, although there seems a reasonable amount of decent running towards the end once you've lost height - says the ever hopeful ex road runner!
Are we confusing the Dunnerdale with the Long Duddon lakeland classic?
The venue for the mini MM do camping http://www.coniston-sports.co.uk/about_us.php
I think it's £7.50 per person with good facilities. We should be there is a van with some mates who will be camping so may see you there
Oops! :o
Keep forgetting that there's a short race.
And a very steep start along something called a road. Great little race though, I'll be there.
For anyone in the caravan club there is a good CL at Upper Hawthwaite farm, easy walk to and from the race plus they have electricity and a shower! I stay there every year for this race and usually go for a bit earlier in the year as well, lots of good running and walking direct from the site.
I'd describe the terrain as 'troublesome' personally, but i've never done it on a dry day. The area is very craggy and dotted with bogs, some bigger than others; both desents are rough in places with the one off CP2 needing extra care if you want to go fast. A good line off Stickle Pike will reward the brave, looking at the BC Runners' map you will see it advises competitors to double back, but you need to be sure footed and committed. There is a short cut round the eastern side of the bog below Great Stickle, crossing the head of the beck at the break of slope and delivering you at the base of the climb. If you cut accross early the bog will swallow you up but if you get it right it's faster. It's a real treat of a race.
You've just talked me into it Mr B
You're more than capable Trev, i might be giving it a miss after i did my ankle 3 weeks ago.
I'm always gasping a bit by the last descent. I always plan to go off the last peak like a scalded rat and get some places back, but the multiple ascents always rob you of pace. It also finishes with an uphill road run. That said, i've not done a better FRA short personally.
Anyone who's not been before should observe the parking procedures, as i believe competitors are now prohibited from parking beyond the Blacksmith's Arms. It also pays to park facing the A593 to Broughton-in-Furness, as this is the way everyone leaves and passing is difficult due to the road mostly being down to one car's width to allow parking on one side. Areas to be left clear for passing and local access will be taped.
Troublesome is a great description of the two descents, well it is for me with my problem knees ! Great little race though, one of the best short races in the calendar. The Dunnerdale fells are certainly The Lake Districts best kept secret. I don't know anywhere else in the country as beautiful where you can go out and not see another single soul. The views are tremendous and the route options for training/walking are great. Highly recommended.
Loved this race last year and am very much looking forward to it again this year.
I'm bringing a car full of Clayton runners. Looking forward to it again ~ especially the beer and the atmosphere in the pub afterwards. Let's hope for a decent forecast.
Pennine club champs race again, so there'll be a crowd of us up for the weekend.
Always look forward to this one - either racing or watching.
I'll be there and the MMM on Sunday with the BOFRA do at Ingleton inbetween :D
I'm really looking forward to this as it's my 30th birthday on Saturday (I couldn't think of anything better to do!) and my family and I are hopefully going to have lunch at the Blacksmiths after, I know I will be hungry even after the pie! It's my first fell race in Cumbria, even though I used to live locally, coming down from Edinburgh. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Matt
The course has a bit of everything - a proper Lakeland Horseshoe in miniature.
Pehaps a bit too much road at the beginning and (less so) at the end but the section on the gnarly little fells is pure magic.
was looking forward to running dunnerdale again great little race, but looks as though im gona have to miss it due to a bad back not run for a week or so now.
recceied it only a couple of weeks ago though so have got my yearly run round. hopefully it il be right for pendle.
Just as a matter of interest how many climbs and descents are there in the race please?
FOUR significant climbs although the fifth on the road up to the Finish field is as painful as any.
The first has about a half mile on the road (and hurts) then up the Knott mainly walking (under 10 mins on fell) . Gentle descent for 2 mins then jog/walk for 10 mins uphill. 5 min descent mainly soft but some rocks. Jump the beck then walk/jog 3mins uphill to the road (about halfway). From road sharp climb jog/walk to Stickle Pike (up to 10 mins). Descend sharply off S Pike back to good path (1 min), then easy descent then across bog area. Usually takes less than 10 mins to Great Stickle (last peak) from S Pike. Tricky descent (flagged) for 3-4 mins to fell gate. Good tracks back to valley (1x30 sec ascent). Then half mile on road which seems more painful than it should.
As you can see, none of the climbs are significant BUT they hurt a lot cos runners tend to go as fast as they can.
Its my training area and those times relate to back of the pack timings (my wife) but offer some sort of guide. Front of the pack timings make the hills read like hillocks. Winner does it usually under 40 mins, back of pack 90 ish mins.
four, the 1st being the longest / hardest it starts on the road, the next three are short easy climbs although the 3rd climb is short its steep for the last 200 yrds its the only hands on knees bit. O nearly forgot about the up hill finish on the road best make that four and a harf!
as fellhound says just a tad to much road but still a cracking little route.
you beat me to it alf.
Thanks Gents.
60 to 65 mins for me then based on the above info and winners projected times.
See you tomorrow.
Cracking race.. packs a lot in..
I felt surprisingly good, couldn't descend for toffee but first proper fell race in months.. thinK i was ~ 45 minutes, 7th.
Carl Bell won, John Brown second, another ambleside I think third, Danny Hope 4th, Mark Roberts 5th, Hugh OD, 6th, Me 7th, Al Fowler 8th.. not sure on the rest.. I think that was the order anyway, but things may have changed towards the end...
Pretty close at the front.
How good were those pies!
Cracker of a race. I didnt feel like I had a good race, but looking back now Im pleased with my result. Good to see Iain, and fail in keeping up with you over the last mile.
Iain, you finished in 44:!6, I was 44:23. 7th & 8th as you say.
Cheers to the organiser, and the millions of marshalls and tea makers!
Think this has got to be my new favourite race. Even the hail shower half way round didn't spoit it.
Didn't push hard enough on the first climb and paid the price by missing my sub 50 target by a good couple of minutes. But... scenery was superb, company was great and pie and beer afterwards - top notch
What a great race. It was a Pennine Champ race so close to 20 of us made the trip. I seemed to be running with about ten of them during the race! Really enjoyable; like a mini Lakeland Classic. Thanks to the RO for a well organised race and for the tea and pie!!

Thanks to to BCR for a great race, (again) well organised and marshalled, with a lovely pie and hot tea, all for six quid, can't be bad.
As for my race, given the underfoot conditions, was pleased with a modest improvement in time and position.
Great race as usual! Results are here.
Whoops - didn't see the link on the last post!! (great race anyway!)
Thought the start was brilliant... then a mad dash down the road..
Keen for more lakes races now, its just so close at the front end, you could lose 10 places so quickly..
Many thanks to the RO and everyone involved
Another grand race in a lovely part of the lakes.
Was happy to shave a little bit of time from last years PB.
I was thinking the same! I cant remember whether it was before or after the first summit, but I thought yourself and I had managed to pull out abit of a gap between us and the main pack, but I turned round and saw what must of been 15/20 guys hot on our heels. - It was right before we started to go left by mistake before spotting the leaders and correcting ourselves.
If I hadnt of had a good descent before crossing the road, I think Id of been alot further down the finishing order.
Fell race eh. Thats what its all about.
