Cheers, Derby Tup!
Cheers Simon, your a star;)
Did we ever decide on a ride venue/date?
In a word, no. Whinlatter was mooted as a venue but nowt was ever sorted.
Not a fan of single-speed at all. Don't see the point in it.
Dis-like the way singles-speeders think they are better for only using one gear as well.
But anyways, i'll just continue to go faster, longer, more efficiently and with more gears than those with just one.
Hey, good for you. Thanks for the input.
Haha, thats the poster that defines it all :-)
Complete rubbish, because the single speeder will still be struggling up a mountain why the geared will be back in the pub with a post ride beer and the totti ;)
No, 'cause the geared rider will be having to wash his bike and then spend hours faffing about with spanners and allen keys to get the thing working again... and then spend the whole of the next day whining because he can't shift onto his little old granny ring.;)
Haha, well maybe he will, if he is a woeful mechanic who cant look after his bike properly! :)
I do admit granny ring is for wimps, and there is really no need for it though.
My next groupset will be Sram XX, middle and big chain ring, 10 on the cassette. Very nice.

55th overall and my best time ever for this event, thanks to Fishbulb for introducing me to the joys of singlespeeding, probably the only singlespeeder taking part and had a smile on my face all the way round, no chain coming off, mechs not working due to mud or snapped gear cables, my mate is seriously considering buying one now:cool:
Great stuff, Merry! Well done mate. :D:D
Been interested in getting a singlespeed for quite some time to improve my fitness, but unsure about a few things.....
Do you have to be super fit?
How do you get up reight steep hills??
Quite fancy a ss road bike (se lager) or crosser (tricross thingy) - are these crap and would I be better off with a mtb???
That's all for now!!!
Cheers;)
1. No, not at all. Be warned however that riding SS can make you fit!
2. Stand up and strain or get off and walk!

3. Don't think either of them are crap, but only you know whether you'd be better off with a mountain bike. Depends of what sort of riding you do really. Why not sling a SS mtb together using an old bike, a SS kit and tensioner and give it a go without splashing too much cash?
I've got a singlespeed crosser sat outside waitng for the ride home. It's not crap. 35c Maxxis Locusts cx tyres pumped up nice and hard, its got a turn of speed on the road, and I can still have a bit of fun along the river and up through the woods. You might be pleasantly surprised what hills you can get up if you grunt and grind a bit. Or you can use the 24" gear (two feet) ;-)
Cheers for the advice chaps!
Think I'll see what I can find second hand on flea bay........

Just looking to get myself after many years a single speed road bike, this one is brilliant and reasonable....

As for some of the comments on this thread, granny gear = aerobic fitness, huge gear equals strength. I watch too many people fighting their bikes...for what?
I know a world champion who when young was restricted to riding a 32 front and 16 rear, everwhere, eventually = world champion.
Anyways I thoroughly believe in high cadence as the guide to enjoying cycling and it doesn't tie you up on the running.
Why pay all that money for gears you hardly use, and I would like to know the cadence of the big gear pusher down Winnets, Wrynose, Hardknot or any other classic hill
Anyone who is thinking of doing a 'coversion' job on an old bike - here's an ad on Singletrack Classifieds which may be of interest: http://www.singletrackworld.com/foru...hain-tensioner
I see the Planet X CX appears to be put together - that headset looks a little iffy though
Do they not build garages where you live?
Have just purchased one of these as it had a big reduction...

Ever got your name under every single last post in a given moment. This is my momentary monopoly :D
I thought about doing that the other evening but managed to resist... glad I'm not the only one to have such thoughts.
Remember this thread! ;0)
