Safety pins for your number were supplied last year... and your first aid kit should have some too!

have been wanting to do this for a few years and been looking at this year, so some questions.
-do a lot of people who finish mix running with walking?
-food is supplied at cp along the route, altho you have to take emergency rations?
-you need 2 maps covering the area, can you photocopy the area needed, laminate and use this instead or do you have to take the os maps?
-id be driving up on morning, is it possible to drop one car of at start and partners car of at finish or do you have to use official bus?
cheers for any info
-yes
-there's food at the roadside checkpoints, 300g of emergency ration must be carried.
-you must have the full maps - Harvey/BMC Yorkshire Dales covers the whole area and I'm guessing that this will suffice - I intend to check with the organiser cos' they're quite strict.
-there's plenty of parking at the finish. You don't have to use the official bus - that's for people who sleep over at the finish, cost about a fiver extra but has the advantage that you register on the bus rather than queing at the start (bus leaves at some insanely early time though!)
It's a good laugh( think I'm losing my marbles) :)
I always find a vast majority run it to dent and then due to the pull up to blea moor its walking - which I find the quickest way but I guess its down to how fast you walk v running up hill
In the past I've always run as much as possible to get over fleet moss in the light....which is the key to it in my view and then you are home free...well sort of !
Last year I dropped off cars at start and finish as I just wanted a good nights sleep...I've had some shocking nights on the gym floor at threshfield...(<3 hrs sleep due to snoring, farting and people talking in their sleep)
The full english breakfast you can have at 5am isn't the best start either...not knocking the organisation its very good, but for me greasy fry up doesn't rest well..I prefer my porridge!
It's a top event and the commoradory is great....especially during the early hours...for me the key is to get to 20 miles @ Dent in decent time and without any blisters...then I really start to enjoy it....mainly because the first 20 is a bit hilly :)
The year I did it we got over Fleet Moss before dark - but went a bit askew going over Middle Tongue, which was much wetter than Fleet Moss. A bit later in the night we headed for the lights of Cray village thinking it was cray checkpoint.
The food at checkpoints is rather good - so you really do only need to carry the minimum required.
I always make the mistake of taking too much food and water.....I normally just take some jelly babies, emergency rations and enough energy powder to last me the distance. As the food/drink checkpoints are pretty regular water is always round the corner.
For those interested I plan to reccie the Fleet moss / middle tongue / Great Whernside section late feb/early March - will raise a reccie thread nearer the time for those interested (although I know some of the route is on private land so this would have to be avoided)
Muddy Retriever - are you going to get your entry in or bottle it....hows the pie and pizza eating going and have you lost that weight yet ?
I'm intrigued, MR. Where do you work, a confectionery factory? Can I come?
Where i work BN, the kitchen is a constant table of goodies! its a hard thing to do is walk in that kitchen to get a pint of water!!! its always full of choccies, and cakes and biscuits, its a horrible kitchen!!!
what ltr sacs do people use or do people use bumbags? have been thinking about justifying buying a new sac:rolleyes:
forgot to ask, anyone fancy reccying part of it, i know somone was on abt posting re a reccy (fidaleo?), need to organise myself with edale reccy, edale race, 3 ppps etc
10 litre sac for me - just big enough to hold waterproof top and bottoms, light fleece, buffs and gloves, cavers survival bag, emergency rations and first aid kit.
I use a shoulder strap mounted 1/2 litre water bottle which is perfect.
The food and drink on course is so good and plentiful you really don't need to carry anything other than the emergency requirement.
Wish I was doing it again this year but just found out that I got into the Fred Whitton cycle sportive which is the day after so think I'll give it miss! (now there's the makings of an extreme triathlon.....)
Hi, Last year was my second Fellsman and I think I have sussed it now because I've finished both times and learnt a few lessons.
-do a lot of people who finish mix running with walking?
Definitely, as previously mentioned its definintely best to get across Fleet Moss and to Cray before dark. Even better if you can get to Park Rash which is my goal this year. 2/3rds of the terrain to Inglebourough is runnable before the final climb. Then its a fast descent down to the Hill Inn, Walk up Whernside, fast descent to Kingsdale, walk up Gregareth and then Run all the way to Dent, this should get you to Dent and a 1/3rd of the way round in good time. Then you can stock up on a sausage roll and some beans and walk them off on the long slog up to Blea Moor Summit. Basically from there walk the uphills and try and move as efficiently as you can over the flat (Some parts you are climbing through peat hags and walking is quicker!) and take advantage of the down hills. It is worth recceing the part of the route you expect to be doing in the dark and just make some notes on landmarks etc. Believe me when you've got 50 miles under your feet and your 15 hrs in you need all the help you can get. The best advice is just keep moving.
-food is supplied at cp along the route, altho you have to take emergency rations?
Its worthwhile just having a bag of jelly babies/gels/peanuts/mars bars just in case you are flagging in your rucksac whatever you prefer. There's plenty of food at the CPs so you don't need much just eat as much as you can. The feed CPs are normally at the bottom of a hill so you've got a walk up hill to digest it. Emergency rations are compulsory think its 300g. Some areas on the route are pretty remote.
-you need 2 maps covering the area, can you photocopy the area needed, laminate and use this instead or do you have to take the os maps?
I would recommend the Harveys maps, I have used both and find them the easiest as long as you like them. Have seen people using laminated photocopies of parts of the route but not sure if you still have to carry the maps. Probably worth asking.
-id be driving up on morning, is it possible to drop one car of at start and partners car of at finish or do you have to use official bus?
Not much parking at the start that won't cost you a few quid, the advantages of the bus are that at least when you finish you can jump in your car, no faffing about going back to Ingleton. And there is plenty of free parking at Threshfield.
Regarding bags I used an 18ltr Innov8 sack with the bladder, but I'm going for the water bottle on the shoulder approach this year, I will use the same bag as its nice and stable and I know it doesn't hurt me.
cherrs donlarko for info, id thght abt 14 ltr inov and water bottle on shoulder strap.
is it 2 harveys maps you used? was checking out fellsman site and they give you a choice, of either 1 explorer or a combination, they seem to suggest that you need to carry maps just in case you go off the laminated map.
im not sure abt the 6 am bus, it might be easier, itll just make it a 4am start to drive up.
Is this the one AJF?
http://www.harveymaps.co.uk/acatalog...ntain_Map.html
yep thats the one. got the full route plus loads more.
You entered yet merry? :)
I've got as far as down-loading an entry form! :p
It'll be my first event for a year or too - looking forward & getting fitter !
Looks like I might not be doing it this year.:(
My daughters birthday is on the 10th and when I tested the water she told me not to do it as I'd already done it last year. Wants me to go to her party this year -missed it last year because of this (she had given me permission that time:rolleyes:).
...and before anyone says I'm too soft! Not spent much time with the kids over the last few weeks because of the PhD and my relationship with them is more important than any particular run.
"Tha's not soft, family comes first mate"
couldn't agree more ... after you've done your run ;)
Can anyone advise on bus services from Threshfield to Ingleton on the Friday? I was considering parking my car at Threshfield and bussing across to Ingleton for B&B on Friday night. I looked at some websites but it's not obvious which are the best services to take and where to change. Thanks.
No warm up run then the night before!!!
Perish the thought. I'll need every ounze of energy for what lies before me. :0
Are you doing the Fellsman and the 100?
Hi Socks,
I'm doing The Fellsman and some 100s, but not sure about THE (LDWA?) 100. Suppose I shouldn't really but I'm too greedy and too tempted.
Fellsman and Lakeland 100 for me + a feww other ultra`s assuming the body holds together.
Is that you on the entrants list for Wye Valley? Nick
Did mean the LDWA one at the end of May. I know several people who I was with on the hundred last year had done the Fellsman. Quite short time to recover in between. I assume you'll be OK - you do seem to do a lot! Although a phrase which includes "nutter" springs to mind!
