Does anybody know what that grass stuff is called when its boggy - usually on a field?
It grows in big clumps and cuts your fingers if you grab it?
Its green.
This stuff -->

What you need Al is:
[drum roll]
GrassBase
'What's that?' you ask. It's a database of the world's grass species that can be searched using name or description.

Enjoy. I'll be asking questions later. ;)
They are on this picture - http://web.ukonline.co.uk/jed/Images1/DSC00514a.jpg
Good old winter hill!
Thats what I call (dunno about Kew) Cotton Grass. The whole of the Dales is plastered with it.
Having done two minutes of internet research, I now feel quite an authority on the subject.
It looks like mat grass (Nardus stricta) to me:

Or it could be cottongrass (cheers Stolly):

This grows where it's more boggy, hence it commonly being called bog cotton.
Fascinating grass-related facts
Anyone fancy a 'Today's moorland vegetation' thread ;)
Al there's a few different but similarly looking 'grasses'. This web site is "really really useful" ---> Peatlands
I reckon it could be any of the following:
Black Bog Rush
Deer Grass or Deer Sedge
Common Cottongrass
Hare's Tail Cottongrass
I now feel a total bog grass expert
I think black bog rush is the winner - actually now im not so sure.
Looking at deer sedge...i remember seeing that in the past, but always thought i was just the ordinary stuff that had been eaten/hadnt grown properly.
Wow, how did i ever go out on the fells and never previously pay any attention to the grass...my, it puts another dimention onto our hobby!
It was quiet here!!! .... a lovely morning.
Anyone Guess which race it was???
The reason its quiet is that I'm so slow I got an early handicap offing :D
praps I ought to 'ave renamed the pic :p
