Complimented me as well and i was chuffed, shame my fan club are all blokes!
Was hoping to plod round in 8ish hours and plodded in in 7.15, chuffed with that, it was a warm un Norman. Thanks to all involved:thumbup:
Baked spud, chilli, cheese, 3 pints of Guinness, Prawn curry at home, ready to go round again...........................next year.
Baildon Boundary way in the morning for me - dreading that long canal stretch
Anti-awfully sorry about the eloquent reply -in my defense you had challenged to me chase after Karen Nash " she's only a bit in front of you" on the final climb when I was still majorly suffering from heat, dizziness, headache, twisted intestines, reching, fluorescent orange diarrohea, sore feet, sunburn on top of recent frostbite(don't ask!!) and general knackeredness!!
I am usually very polite!! And you had offered to help me with any zipper malfunctions I might encounter again-you really didn't deserve the nasty bark I gave you!!
So, please accept my apologies and on the next meet I will be sweetness and light.
Great event and great that when you are suffering so many fellow forumites help you round-Splatcher I owe you big style. Never again!
Thanks to the organisers for another superb event. Loved the sunshine. Thanks to the Calder guy and Chris M who I parasited my way round with as I didnt have a clue where to go, and broke 6hrs :)
only 25 mins behind zlod so loadsa UC points :)
and chuffed to scalp simon D.
it will never be as dry underfoot as that again for this race, for us long of us are ever fit enough to compete. driest March since 1953 i think!
i was the eejut in the cycling top who only arrived 10 mins before the start and hadnt even paid yet, oops. thanks to the team for a speedy check in. i didnt even have time to tie up my shoelaces properly before we were off.
i was also the eejut who didnt turn left at the start as i was a quick starter, even tho i knew from this forum it wasnt the quickest route, and I auto-followed the berk who went right :x
wish i'd spent longer tying my laces now, as after thundering down that first insane hill, I had to stop and retie them. i figure that flowing downhill fast is a lesser evil than using your quads for braking.
from the Lumbutts? CP before Stoodley, who else turned right at that track and went up the long stone flagged walk directly up to Stoodley. Its not necess any longer a route and me and simon D went this way. but is was too steep to run at all so a slow powerwalk. not even much quicker than the walkers. but my point is that we were met the Stoodley CP by Chris M who had effectively overtaken us. reason being that the 'lowland' path is initially flat and runnable (and much faster), and then you take the hit and yomp straight up it like on the Hobble. i.e .flat then steep is faster than a long overall drag.
glad i didnt use road shoes tho it was so dry it was doable and wouldnt have been that much in it. i cant use low profile fell runner type shoes as i overpronate a lot, and at these distances, even off road i need proper support shoes. which are a relatively bit high up off the ground and wobbly. so i'd have poss just twisted my weak abused ankle more times in road shoes than just the couple of times that i did. the problem bits for road shoes would have been going over the tufty open moorland sections.
Er...well...no. I am now slower than you again. I struggled big time from the top of Stoodley Pike & shuffled the rest. 6:50, so I beat 7 hours. A bit cross with myself though, as I'd hoped to do a bit better, & I hate blowing up like that. Still, what a lovely day eh?
Yes what a great event, all credit to the organisers. Got round in 6-49 and was comfortable most of the way. It was my first time and I don't think I made the best route choice in two or three places otherwise I might have been a bit quicker - well thats my excuse anyway! I wore road shoes and didn't have any problems - there were a few rough wet bits where trail shoes would have been better but that was more than made up for in the cushioning my knees got on the miles of track and road. That's my third UC race so will be be putting my feet up (so to speak) until the Phoenix - let's hope the weather is as good.
Fantastic day out (although there were times I did not quite believe that). It seems I had my bad patch earlier than most (think perhaps I tried to eat and drink too much? normally I eat or drink very little, but thought I should in the heat)and when you all disappeared off into the distance before Long Causeway I felt bad enough to consder calling it a day, if I was struggling by then I reckoned I might not even make it round. Just as well I was on my own for the next bit as anyone listening would have said I was a right loony- telling myself to get a grip, enjoy the sun. stop feeling sorry for myself etc. Also managed to sneak a better line which I only realised when I looked behind me going up T Pike. Even then I thought I was kidding myself. Another good line down to the canal and the train let me be ahead at the checkpoint- the look on the face of Roy who i travelled with was a picture! Being back with you all (Andy, Roy and others)gave me hope and second wind so thanks. Being determined not to be beaten by Rachel or Roy also kept me going- and he had to slow down coz he didn't know the way! Last push was thanks to the young lad running the shorter course- everytime I wanted to stop I thought of my son and what we say about maximum effort. Could not beleive I had beaten lastt years time. Another great event. Thanks marshalls.
Pics from Stoodley Pike are at www.sportsunday.co.uk
What a day. It was just like summer; the third Runfurther event, third sunny Calderdale in a row and third and final time on this route. I shall miss it like an old friend. It was the best one.
The sheltered climbs in full sun got a bit warm. As I struggled up the steep side to Stoodly Pike I met the photographer coming down at the end of her stint. It's nice to see the Sportsunday efforts on line once again. There are some cracking photos. I see Karen got another good summit photo.
Well done Zlod with the win. When you called out to me from the carpark as I ran the finishing straight I wanted to ask you if you got the win this year but couldn't; I was putting all my efforts into the 'sprint' finish.
Is the route changing then? Sorry not to stay and chat but we had to get back to family duties! Struggling to run on S Pike- but did manage a wry smile.
From the website:
"The route is changed, usually every 3 years, thereby bringing in different parts of Calderdale and the Pennine countryside, into the day event which is appreciated by all the competitors. "
It's been the same for 3 years, but a completely different route in earlier years. Expect something new next year. It probably won't be any easier though!
Too hot for me this one. I said to Nick just after the start I was going to get some running in before it got too hot. Not sure it helped much as despite drinking loads with elete electrolyte in I cramped up just over the top of Thievely and slowed down the rest of the way.
Got lost badly at that Cragg vale bit where everyone said it was difficult. Went right up the road then back down the other way. When I did find the path I went astray again and ended up in a boggy bit hopping barbed wire fences. Struggled to get my leg over a fence and got my shorts caught up in the wire, fell straight over it into a big puddle with half my shorts still on fence. Glad no one saw it, must've been a pathetic sight. Lost about 30 minutes with this and having a sit down at a few CPs.
I need to practise running in the tussocks as everyone flew past me on these bits.
Good race with plenty of refreshment and support. Thanks to the organisers.
Well done Zlod on the win and all that got around.
Well done Zlod and Nicky and everyone else, good pics from sportsunday as usual, well done on the sprint finish Nick, i blinked and nearly missed you;)
Looking at them pics on the Runfurther Facebook page, some daft sod was in 4th position at the start, thought i was stood at the back cos everyone new the shortcut the other way. It didn't last long:D
Well done to Nicky as well with the women's win. I've just found out here.
Steve you tease. It's all relative and you must have sluggish eyelids. ;)
Fly, you paint an amusing picture over getting hitched, but not over the cramp. I think a few might have had similar problems in that heat. (I'm usually lucky in escaping it.) You still must have got round fast though. I don't recall seeing you at the finish.
Splatcher, they told me at CP10 (Foul Clough Road) that 'Number 1' was exactly 1 hour ahead of 'Number 2'. I couldn't believe you'd built up such a lead. I continued the conversation I'd started with the checkpoint staff last year about the Vitamin D-giving qualities of sunlight and not getting rickets, before eventually dragging myself away for the final 12-mile bimble. I finished 56 minutes after you. By 'eck, you must have slowed down to reach my level. :p
I was a bit tired and just had my first pint of Guinness:wink:
Seriously though, it's amazing no matter how knackered you feel you always find a bit more when you see the finish line. Thoroughly enjoyed my first Calderdale, will have to do it every year, it's only a 2 mile walk from my house.
Anyone any idea when results will be about
There's usually a bit of a wait I seem to recall. Give it a week or two.
I've just uploaded my pictures. They amount to 78, and that's after pruning and merging! :w00t: I should really get on with the job in hand and not use picture-taking as an excuse for a breather. (Who said slacker?)
If you carry on taking lens cracking pics of me you won't have a camera or excuse for a breather Nick:wink:
Great pics as always, Slacker? Not with your race schedule:thumbup:
And to shed some light on the 'Fire on the Horizon' pic, i was a bit worried as it was coming from the vicinity of my house, got home to find my son and his mates had had a BBQ!
Nothing left for me though, not a sausage:sneaky:
You had a lucky escape Steve. It was bound to be carcinogenic.
Great pics there again Nick. Thats a big portfolio for one race. I must get a decent camera as the pics I took on my phone are dire. I got round in about 7:30 I think and had to dash straight home. Will be back again next year but a bit more prepared next time.
Steve was that you on the bit just before Stoodley who couldn't open the gate? with the girl in the blue top
gagging for these results...
Good pics Nick and good to meet you too.
Here's a report for those who are interested.

Henry
Henry, I'm so glad you posted and remade contact. I've been racking my brains since Calderdale to recall your name and where we communicated. Trawling through my communication records, links and contacts drew a blank. I'll try to remember in future. I can give you a name-check now.
It was good to meet you and chat along the way.
Like the blog Henry. Thats another one I'll keep bookmarked. Seems like ultra runners like writing ultra long blog posts Don't recall seeing you at the race but will say hello at another runfurther race, maybe Osmotherley or HP40
Nice blog Fly
Can't believe what you managed to eat tho. I tried to eat and drink more than usual to compensate for the heat. Lots of Zipvit powder in water plus one gel, and that gel was a struggle. Didn't eat any of the fingers of fudge or any of the shock blocks. oh and 2 paracetamol.
I was amused by the way that everyone I spoke to for directions pretended they'd never even heard Sawb pronounced Sowerby before.
"Excuse me mate, could you direct me to Sowerby Cricket Club please?"
"Where?" Looks at me like i'm an idiot. Long pause. "Oh, SawB"
Just to get the point across!
Cheers folks. My writing is a bit better than my running unfortunately. I'd rather it was the other way around. ;)
Henry, yes, go ahead. You can use / link my pictures.
Well done Henry and congrats on your blog. I missed this years Calderdale and also Hardmoors and most recently an outing on the Heptonstall 7 trigs following a fall on the Wuthering Hike. It's great to get all these perspectives on the long days out and is teeth grindingly frustrating on the road back. (Usually, Nicks` reports keep me up to speed with things but it's great to see an increase in these blogs; I do find them very helpful. Always good reading, informative and often even inspiring.) Sneaking little 10 and 20K trails hoping to get some semblance of order is tough going for me at the moment when all I really wish to do is disappear for a full days outing with the "A" team (or in my case, watch the A team head off quickly into the distance). Hope to catch up with you at Osmotherly? Cheers Henry and well done agin!
