Any chance that the field car park will be used? Should be easily dry enough now.
Good News
Parking for the Three Shires Race will after all be at the hotel. The good weather this week has dried up the fields enough for the farmer, John Birkett, to give us the go ahead.

Does that mean junior races are back
Sorry I deviated after starting my post to see if there had been anything put in the junior forum or on the Ambleside website and Turbo got there before me (probably a bit like a race itself then!)
Try PM Britta (on Selwyn's behalf) or email Selwyn - his address is in the FRA handbook race details and here. He is the one who will definitely know. ;)
No, still no junior races,
Sorry.
Wahey! webcam now showing marquee in field! I'm getting excited now! :D :o
Looks like my solo attempt at a good line up Wetherlam paid off, i used a guy with a cheshire hill runners vest as a marker, he was faster than me but my line was better. It was all going well until the s**t hit the fan and my knee started to pack up, i was in some considerable discomfort coming down to three shires stone and by the time i was descending the pike it was excruciating and i was haemorrhaging places at the rate of about 4 a minute. The failure of my knee to adequetely support me caused me to go down hard on the other knee on some razor sharp shards.
I really needed a strong performance today and for good reason, what i managed was piss poor and i was so dejected at the finish i just grabbed one of those delicious pastys and left. I'll find out the extent of my underperforming when the results are aired on here later.
On a more upbeat note thanks awfully to the girl with the blond hair and smurf blue shorts with matching camelbak who offered some sympathy, it was lovely to meet you and i hope your result was as good as you were predicting it to be; and i suppose sorry to the two gents who i spoke to afterwards and was so pitifully negative to , even hearing Blue Monday by New Order on the way back didn't cheer me up.
Respect to the Three Shires Inn for letting us abuse their toilets, and thanks to the providers of the pastys, i'm off to birch my sorry ass.
Does anyone have the results?:p
this was a real tuff race. The clag was down and alot of folk got lost coming off swirl how. I thought I was lost but turned out I was actually on the path down to 3 shires stone, like I planned it eh.
I'm terrible at climbing (not joking, everyone who is on the hill, takes over me) but this time fed myself some kendal mint before the last two ascents and it seemed to work, on the last one, I know its only small, no one took over me.
Thanks to organisers.
Good to see a lot of familiar faces, some great runs.
Was I talking to Al Fowler? pre and post race.
Here are provisional results for first 60 runners:
http://chris-upson.com/results/2009/ThreeShires2009.htm
They only had times for the first 20 runners when I took this copy.
The first 4 were all Borrowdale and all within 11 seconds!
Wow!
My first Lakeland Classic!
Gave Mary a lift in from Windermere and arrived nice 'n' early, registering as number 27
Saw plenty of familiar faces, including Marcel, Al and PeaWet and set off near the back with a cunning plan to reach 3ShireStone in 1:56...
whoever I followed up into the mist on Wetherlam did a darned good job, and I hit the CP bang on and 3mins ahead of schedule
the clag was pretty thick on the tops, and I was glad of having recce'd it, shaving another couple of mins off before Swirl How and then doing a text-book descent to Three Shire Stone, reaching it in 1:47, which I never imagined in my wildest dreams
I was now 9 minutes up on my plan to finish in 3:45
scoffed some eccles cake proffered by a nice man near the CP, donned my jacket in the persistent rain and plugged up to Blisco, shaving another minute off - now 10mins up!
doubling back off Blisco, seemed to be a lot of people coming up, which was odd because I assumed there'd be very few behind me - saw Marcel amongst them - "Hello Marcel, shouldn't you be a long way ahead of me...?" I began - "Don't ask! Nightmare..." he replied - it became apparent that a LOT of people had gone somewhat astray... most of them overtook me on the way down to Blea Tarn - but it made a change to actually feel like part of the race with people around me
I was slowing somewhat now, but still 6mins ahead of schedule and harbouring thoughts of breaking 3:40...
however, the ascent of Lingmoor slowed me down even further - problems with cramping in a small quad muscle, plus running out of water...
a friendly marshal at the top had some water to give, which was nice, but I had dropped another couple of mins and 3:40 was looking doubtful...
my whole body seemed to be shutting down in stages now, and I shambled along the top of Lingmoor and down the zigzags feeling like the living dead, but trying to blank it all out and "auto-pilot" it as best I could
deliriously happy to reach the finish :D
3:43 - happy with that
had to have a little lie down
cheese butty + pint and started to feel vaguely human again
already planning sub-3:30 for next year
round-trip drive from Manchester was worth it purely for the sight, coming down Wet Side Edge, looking down onto cloud rolling over the top of the pass, and the summit of Blisco sticking out above like a rocky island in a white sea
Well done Daz. Great report that!:D
Great effort Daz - You certainly seemed to have improved loads over the last couple of years!!
What's the secret...??;)
Excellent read....well done Daz xxx
I loved it!
I was determined i wasnt going to kill myself early on because i didnt want to have died before i had to climb lingmoor.
Set off right near the back and regretted it slightly as i went and over-took about 100 people before i'd got to the river crossing - which was ace!:D
Eventually caught Albert 'blackrod lad' Sunter up and stuck with him going up Weatherlam and the pace was perfect.
Just before we got to the top i past Albert and could see Stanners further up in the mist.
Followed the track and a few others, inc stanners and the pennine runner who turned out to be Marvin all the way on perfect lines....Marvin that line round the back of Great Carrs was spot on!
Was glued to the back of stanners on the decent down off Great Carrs until the point where you can see the three shires down down in the valley below where i had a proper 'brakes off, brain off' moment and flew down the hill down to the road and managed to get away from all the people that we where with at the top of the decent.
Passed the ever chearful Wheezing Donkey who gave me abit of water and a few sweets. My legs died after this point trying to climb up to blisco but i forced a pork pie down my and caught a bowland lad, a clem runner and a dark peak guy.
After leaving the blisco summit i back-tracked perfectly and headed off to Bela Tarn. Had a slight worry of where to head so whipped the map out and ran for the big hill in the distance.;)
Had a few good falls down to blea tarn and cramp was hitting me on the track that goes along the tarn.
Eased off climbing Lingmoor because i knew if i put any effort in, the higher the chance the cramp would properly nail me on the track into the finish ---and i didnt want that to happen because stanners was somewhere behind me.:D
Followed the Dark Peak guy through some perfect racing lines off Lingmoor and then just trotted into the finish.:)
Didnt kill myself and Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!
Those pasties at the pub where top notch!
Good to see the slug, mudders, marvin, peawet for the lift, stanners, joe, and with GeoffB 2nd V50!!!!
Good to see the legend that is Bill Smith there as well. Passed him on Lingmoor and he said "Good run Lad":)
Thanks MG! look forward to seeing you out on the hills some time soon :)
Nelly - no real secret, just yer basic progressive overload :D
anyway, you're not doing so bad yourself are you? did I spy your name in the Langdale Horseshoe start list? ;)
My turn to have the kids so hubby could run. He dropped us off at the three shires stone and we walked the route in reverse stopping to support on Swirl How: apologies if the kids put anyone off with their cries of "keep going you're nearly there" after all there were only two more hills left at that point :)
Well Done Daz and all of you. Throughly enjoyed myself. Have some spectacular bruises from wiping it out twice. thanks to all the organisers. Any pictures yet?
Mary
Lots of great reports everyone. They have almost made me forget my battered ankles.
Thanks to all the marshals, especially the ones on Pike O'Blisco, as it was horrendous up there when I finally staggered to the top. Great job by the car parking people too.
Proves I learned a bit from getting it wrong on the Old Counties Tops last year with Daz H. I have to admit there was a bit of luck involved this time, but at least I had an idea where I was going despite the clag - Duddon Valley earlier this year helped.:)
P.S. Just couldn't keep up with you and the other young uns after that. Well run.
hi ,( 09 Three Shires) I had a good run , camped hodge quarry fri night.jogged over sat am .set of well back, thu ford (bridge condemed) no prob seal skins on went up wetherlam first track i thought to soon in small group, but hit check pt fine in mist stuck to ridge over and round swirl how, thicker fog overdid descent to right but corrected as got below fog.hit stone 1.50 ish ,heavy rain but clear to blisco just went straight line to top. sighted blea and plantation and went down straight line thru rocks to run line, slippery took some falls, was thru bracken and past blea tarn passed a few up ling moor one but then two passed me at top (easier climb than grisedale beck to wall stile on grisedale horseshoe)ran over top and down into finish fine on road past pub some basxxxd in a car whacked me with wing mirror ,not a problem was under 3.30 a bit thanks to all concerned cheers.

Well, What a great race!!
I had been a little nervous about navigation in the cloud before the start of the race but once we were off I felt pretty happy MOST of the way around with just an element of (needless) uncertainty when contouring Great Carrs.
I managed to pick up a passager from Wetherlam, a lady from CFR who, on the way UP wetherlam, was suggesting the climb was "worse than child birth". I had tried to give her a little encouragement on the climb but by that point I needed to save some for myself.
Coming off Swirl How I felt I was on the right line, and I was or there abouts, but I can see how it would be so easy to end up off route when the clagg is in. A good strong run down to the three shires stone though and my main worry of getting to the cut-off in time was needless as I made it in 1:50.
I knew we weren't too far from the back but when I looked behind me on the ascent up to Blisco it seemed strange that there were so many runners behind me, but then I started to hear others talking about losing time with a bad route choice off Swirl How (Unlucky guys).
We kept going, offering each other encouragement all the way down off Blisco and I came out right on the Stile leading through the bracken to Blea Tarn and saw Daztheslug just heading down the right hand side of the wall. I chose to stick to the normal path and the slippy well trodden (by now) route down.
As we approched Blea Tarn, just coming through the woods I took a tumble and at EXACTLY the same time, few meters behind me so did my new running mate! I tried to get my footing (imagine something akin to a cartoon character sliding on ice with arms and legs flying all over the place) but in the end I hit the deck (My first proper fall in fell running). My body not being content with a little pain from the fall, it decided to cramp up my right leg also. So there I lay in the woods, my leg in spasm, my other leg now stinging, wondering "...what the F*** was I doing" when suddenly the spasm eased and a friendly hand helped my up to my feet and off we trotted as if it hadn't happened.
As we crossed the road though after Blea Tarn there was a wonderful sign, something like "Drink station ahead". I crossed the cattle grid to find..... an empty road :(
My climb up Lingmoor was slow and I ran out of water just after the start of the climb, despite bringing about 1 1/2 litres with me, and my pace dropped. I think this was more fatigue that the water and I started to flag behind now, thankfully though one of the marshalls on Lingmoor gave me some water and with potentially no more climbing left I managed to pickup my pace just a tad on the descent to the finish.
We crossed the line in 3hr 39 mins and I was very happy with that time and was happy to collapse beside the finish line. I was just looking forward to one of the pasties I had been told about, only to be told when I got to the table that they had just run out. :(:(
Thanks to all for organising and marshalling, and for the bottle of wine I got as a spot prize. Also thanks to the girl from the pub who appeared about 10 mins after the presentation finished with about 10 pasties on a tray. But most of all thanks to Al Fowlup for bringing me 4 BIG bags of Peanut M&M's, for giving him a lift to the race!
Well done everyone, see you next time!
