Re: 3 Shires - Car parking

Looks like my solo attempt at a good line up Wetherlam paid off, i used a guy with a cheshire hill runners vest as a marker, he was faster than me but my line was better. It was all going well until the s**t hit the fan and my knee started to pack up, i was in some considerable discomfort coming down to three shires stone and by the time i was descending the pike it was excruciating and i was haemorrhaging places at the rate of about 4 a minute. The failure of my knee to adequetely support me caused me to go down hard on the other knee on some razor sharp shards.

I really needed a strong performance today and for good reason, what i managed was piss poor and i was so dejected at the finish i just grabbed one of those delicious pastys and left. I'll find out the extent of my underperforming when the results are aired on here later.

On a more upbeat note thanks awfully to the girl with the blond hair and smurf blue shorts with matching camelbak who offered some sympathy, it was lovely to meet you and i hope your result was as good as you were predicting it to be; and i suppose sorry to the two gents who i spoke to afterwards and was so pitifully negative to , even hearing Blue Monday by New Order on the way back didn't cheer me up.

Respect to the Three Shires Inn for letting us abuse their toilets, and thanks to the providers of the pastys, i'm off to birch my sorry ass.

Sounds like you did well to finish. Well done on that at least.

    Re: 3 Shires -

this was a real tuff race. The clag was down and alot of folk got lost coming off swirl how. I thought I was lost but turned out I was actually on the path down to 3 shires stone, like I planned it eh.
I'm terrible at climbing (not joking, everyone who is on the hill, takes over me) but this time fed myself some kendal mint before the last two ascents and it seemed to work, on the last one, I know its only small, no one took over me.
    Thanks to organisers.
Good to see a lot of familiar faces, some great runs.
Was I talking to Al Fowler? pre and post race.

Here are provisional results for first 60 runners:
    http://chris-upson.com/results/2009/ThreeShires2009.htm

They only had times for the first 20 runners when I took this copy.
The first 4 were all Borrowdale and all within 11 seconds!

Re: 3 Shires - Car parking

    Wow!
    My first Lakeland Classic!
Gave Mary a lift in from Windermere and arrived nice 'n' early, registering as number 27
Saw plenty of familiar faces, including Marcel, Al and PeaWet and set off near the back with a cunning plan to reach 3ShireStone in 1:56...
whoever I followed up into the mist on Wetherlam did a darned good job, and I hit the CP bang on and 3mins ahead of schedule
the clag was pretty thick on the tops, and I was glad of having recce'd it, shaving another couple of mins off before Swirl How and then doing a text-book descent to Three Shire Stone, reaching it in 1:47, which I never imagined in my wildest dreams
I was now 9 minutes up on my plan to finish in 3:45
scoffed some eccles cake proffered by a nice man near the CP, donned my jacket in the persistent rain and plugged up to Blisco, shaving another minute off - now 10mins up!
doubling back off Blisco, seemed to be a lot of people coming up, which was odd because I assumed there'd be very few behind me - saw Marcel amongst them - "Hello Marcel, shouldn't you be a long way ahead of me...?" I began - "Don't ask! Nightmare..." he replied - it became apparent that a LOT of people had gone somewhat astray... most of them overtook me on the way down to Blea Tarn - but it made a change to actually feel like part of the race with people around me
I was slowing somewhat now, but still 6mins ahead of schedule and harbouring thoughts of breaking 3:40...
however, the ascent of Lingmoor slowed me down even further - problems with cramping in a small quad muscle, plus running out of water...
a friendly marshal at the top had some water to give, which was nice, but I had dropped another couple of mins and 3:40 was looking doubtful...
my whole body seemed to be shutting down in stages now, and I shambled along the top of Lingmoor and down the zigzags feeling like the living dead, but trying to blank it all out and "auto-pilot" it as best I could
deliriously happy to reach the finish
    3:43 - happy with that
had to have a little lie down
cheese butty + pint and started to feel vaguely human again
already planning sub-3:30 for next year

round-trip drive from Manchester was worth it purely for the sight, coming down Wet Side Edge, looking down onto cloud rolling over the top of the pass, and the summit of Blisco sticking out above like a rocky island in a white sea
