Eh, i am a NON runner and i thought that was a really nice read!! and love the photographs too, can i possibly steal one of them for my desktop?
I've sort of done the Dales though left, front and sideways. If I do carry on in 2009 I'd have to be much more selective and maybe hop over to the Lakes more often. I dunno I'll give it some thought.
And if you do the xmas on the fells can you get some photos so i can update my desktop, yes i like a bigger res, its the sheep, snow, and sunshine picture!
Yeah thats the one Al, its a pretty picture, got it on my desktop!

20th December 2008 - Ingleborough, Park Fell and Pen y Ghent circuit from Horton - 17.25 miles and at least 3,500 feet of up/down
OS Explore Route
For the past few weeks at work things have been stupidly hectic and, on top of that, I've 'had to' go along to three seperate boozy Christmas functions (its a tough job but someone has to do it) which I might have gone a bit OTT at. Typically I've been leaving for work at 6 am and getting home at 7 ish in the evening and its just felt like I've getting up, going to work, coming home, going to sleep, getting up.... etc etc. All in all I've pretty much been going mental, not helped much by me already living with Mad Jac Mcmad either. Anyway all of that's a long winded introduction to the fact that I've now finished work for Christmas and can now look to clear my addled brains...... and yesterday's corker of a run definitely did that!
Starting from Horton I hacked up to the top of Ingleborough before scooting along the top of the ridge to the Park Fell trig. Here's my piss poor attempt at taking a photo of myself running - at this point I'm running totally in the opposite direction from Pen y Ghent, my final destination on the horizon in the background:

The view just before I launched myself off of the edge of Park Fell:

Once beyond High Birkwith things became decidedly and humungously boggy with the occasional swamp thrown in, especially passing through Black Dubb Moss. Believe it not it took me the best part of an hour to get to the top of Pen y Ghent from when I took this picture:
http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/4969/pc200594nb7.jpg
Finally I clawed my way out of the bog fields and could look back on much of my route - Ingleborough on the horizon to the left and Park Fell on the right (with Whernside just visible beyond on the far right):

I reached the summit of Pen y Ghent almost 2 hours to the minute after getting to the top of Ingleborough. Then it was just a case of 'speedily' shuffling down to Brackenbottom and Horton for the finish, passing on the way the biggest and most beautiful hawk I've ever seen. It more of less flew over my shoulder, had bells on and was being 'flown' by some chap in the next field - its wing span must have almost been the same as mine!
Anyway a great run to start the Christmas hols with - 3 hours and 22 minutes.
I tried googling the hawk that I saw and the nearest fit I could get was a red tailed hawk, a native of America. One of these boogers :

Well done sounds like a fun time, and the hawk (Falcon) could be a sign for you, if you believed in such things...
If you don't then it was just nice to see it, shame you didn't get a pic of it!
That's a coincidence Stolly, I was planning to do this route today except the other way round as a 3 Peaks recce. My climb to Pen-y-Ghent would follow the 3 Peaks route.
I chickened out of it because of the weather and ended up doing a run round Pendle instead:(!
:) I reckon doing it the other way round would be a bit easier and a bit faster. Your way both climbs, up Pen y Ghent and Park Fell, would be relatively short but sharp whilst there would be long drawn out gradual descents rather than climbs in my case. And running down through Black Dubb Moss has to be faster than running up through it :D
22nd December 2008 - Pen y Ghent and Plover Hill from Horton - 8.5 miles and 1800 ft of climb
OS Explore Route
Bloody hell I've only gone and run this route yet again for the gazillionth time since the summer. Today though I met up with Ady and tried to keep up with him on the way round. Soon after the off by Brackenbottom Farm we met a chap carrying a hawk which he told me was a Harrier Hawk; one of these beauties:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/1...ierhawkec4.jpg
Maybe it was one of those I saw the other day, who knows, but I'm sure that one had a red tail and seemed larger. Anyway you wait ages to see a hawk and suddenly two come along one after the other!
Luckily Ady had raced yesterday and I wasn't feeling too bad so Ady only had to wait for me to catch up a couple of times on the way up. We got to the trig on top of Pen y Ghent in a pretty good time for me of 34 minutes odd but, after that, the mud kicked in big time on the ridge to Plover and what I was hoping could be a pb over my previous running of this suddenly felt less likely. All the same we both threw ourselves off the side of Plover Hill for a brilliantly hair raising descent and kept the throttle down pretty well all the way to Hull Pot. Ady taking a breather with Ingleborough in the back ground:

A far better (hehe) picture of Ingleborough:

After Hull Pot Ady branched off to do another lap of Pen y Ghent while I raced down the Pennine Way farm track to Horton. Pen y Ghent looking stunning as usual:

All in all a bloody good run out but not a pb for me which would need much firmer ground on the ridge line - 1 hour 28 and 15 secs. Thanks for the run and the company Ady.
Nice one Stolly, some of us are still noses to the grindstone for a few more days yet, so that has cheered me up loads.
I could smell the fresh air on those photos. :D
23rd December 2008 - Embsay Crag, Embsay Moor and Rylstone Cross Circuit - 8 miles and maybe 1200 ft of ascent
OS Explore Route
Well I bottled out of the Xmas forum run in the lakes and instead had a run around Embsay Moor with my daughter Kelly and her boyfriend's spazzy dog Lottie. Lottie is a cocker spaniel 'on speed' and it was just brilliant fun to run with her (and Kels). For the first third of the run she took it in turns to tow us, firstly up Embsay Crag and then acroos the moor, before we took her lead off and she ran wild, ranging madly either side of us through the heather. Eventually we got to Rylstone Cross and she finally calmed down for a bit of a breather with Kelly:
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/7691/pc230607dk7.jpg
Then we hurtled back towards Embsay following the wall along a bog-tastic trod. Sharp Haw and Rough Haw as viewed from the ridge on the wall run:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/184/pc230608yq3.jpg
It was only in the last mile or two that Lottie began to flag but, even flagging, she set a cracking pace. Stolly and Lottie with Embsay Crag in the background:
http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/707/pc230611su0.jpg
Great, great run in a time of 1 hour 35, not bothering to stop the watch when we had to stop and capture Lottie or when we clambered around Rylstone Cross.
Keep away! We are infected.........
