    Re: Stolly's Running Adventure

20th December 2008 - Ingleborough, Park Fell and Pen y Ghent circuit from Horton - 17.25 miles and at least 3,500 feet of up/down

    OS Explore Route

For the past few weeks at work things have been stupidly hectic and, on top of that, I've 'had to' go along to three seperate boozy Christmas functions (its a tough job but someone has to do it) which I might have gone a bit OTT at. Typically I've been leaving for work at 6 am and getting home at 7 ish in the evening and its just felt like I've getting up, going to work, coming home, going to sleep, getting up.... etc etc. All in all I've pretty much been going mental, not helped much by me already living with Mad Jac Mcmad either. Anyway all of that's a long winded introduction to the fact that I've now finished work for Christmas and can now look to clear my addled brains...... and yesterday's corker of a run definitely did that!

Starting from Horton I hacked up to the top of Ingleborough before scooting along the top of the ridge to the Park Fell trig. Here's my piss poor attempt at taking a photo of myself running - at this point I'm running totally in the opposite direction from Pen y Ghent, my final destination on the horizon in the background:

The view just before I launched myself off of the edge of Park Fell:

Once beyond High Birkwith things became decidedly and humungously boggy with the occasional swamp thrown in, especially passing through Black Dubb Moss. Believe it not it took me the best part of an hour to get to the top of Pen y Ghent from when I took this picture:

Finally I clawed my way out of the bog fields and could look back on much of my route - Ingleborough on the horizon to the left and Park Fell on the right (with Whernside just visible beyond on the far right):

I reached the summit of Pen y Ghent almost 2 hours to the minute after getting to the top of Ingleborough. Then it was just a case of 'speedily' shuffling down to Brackenbottom and Horton for the finish, passing on the way the biggest and most beautiful hawk I've ever seen. It more of less flew over my shoulder, had bells on and was being 'flown' by some chap in the next field - its wing span must have almost been the same as mine!

Anyway a great run to start the Christmas hols with - 3 hours and 22 minutes.

I tried googling the hawk that I saw and the nearest fit I could get was a red tailed hawk, a native of America. One of these boogers :

Well done sounds like a fun time, and the hawk (Falcon) could be a sign for you, if you believed in such things...

If you don't then it was just nice to see it, shame you didn't get a pic of it!
