Yes its expensive but depending on how far away you live looked at in the context of the price of fuel to get there, perhaps a couple of nights on the campsite in Glen Nevis, buying a meal or two in Fort William, possibly visiting the pub on Saturday night etc etc, the entry fee seems a comparatively small part of the overall cost. I'm happier paying the £22 entry fee to the Race Association than I am paying the tax on the fuel I'll use getting there to HMG (assuming my entry gets there in time of course)
It might also put off some of the less serious entries who get an entry in thinking they might have a go if they feel like it in September - just as long as its a nice day - and condemn others to the waiting list. I know many of the non starters will have very good valid reasons - but there does seem to be a very high drop out rate which is a shame for a race which is so oversubscribed.
