I believe (I will double check with Harry tomorrow - ask at registration if you need further clarification) that we will have a marshal at the top of the track at the start of the flagged section to direct people. On leg 2 you would have to either make some bizzare route choice to avoid him, or sneak past in camouflage as there is only one sensible way off of Low Pen, it'll won't be much different on leg 4 although there are two different ways to approach the track junction. (There is a third way to get from Sharp Knott to Knock Murton which avoids the start of the flagged section totally - but you will lose time if you go that way).
Note that the marshal will not be taking numbers - unless you disregard his instructions:mad:.
TBH there is very little difference in the alternative approaches up Knock Murton coming from this direction, and I think the main reason for the flagging was to ensure we didn't lose people in the woods:eek:, and to direct everyone to the one stile along the fence at the top of the tree line.
Look - I'm an awkward sod!
If I am on Leg 1 and get to CP3 - then I make the bizarre decision to go to Lamplugh down the track, and make my way back to the Start/Finish area via the road - would I be DQd for missing the flags?
I won't comment on your first statement ;), and given that I'm not in charge of flagging, the courses or marshalling I'm hesitant to comment on the second. However, I have stayed awake in all of the committee meetings :) so I know what the intend has been on this and to me mandatory means mandatory so delibrately missing the flags as you suggest (which can only be delibrate for leg 1) would get you and your team DQd.
On legs 2 & 4 up Knock Murton there is one corner on the track that all sensible route choices come to, if you then ignore the flags from that point I believe you (and hence your team) will be DQd.
I will double check this with those in charge of the course and if you have any questions please bring them to me at registration.
