One of my favourite races as it was a very local training spot. Looks like you all had a great day for it.
Despite blowing up after Black Hill due to lack of training and fitness (lost 10 places on the descent!), I had a cracking race and it's great to be back.
Has it ever been so dry up there? I've never come back from a run there with clean feet. (I saw some of you found some arse deep bogs - must have missed them).
Thanks to Des and Geoff at registration.
Next stop Burbage!
When I did it 2 years ago it was pretty dry if memory serves. It was another warm, humid day and heading out to Black Hill was absolute murder - one reason I don't feel too bad about missing yesterday's race now!
then once we'd made the trig at the top the wind was blowing a gale! making it hard going across the peat...
Of all the people to pick for a feature picture...

Lol :))
Just noticed from the results - only 1 vet in the first 10 finishers. Now that makes a refreshing change.
i've done a bit of a report in my blog
good to get out and see everyone running this race...that wind was a bit harsh. I spectated and Zephr ran; he's written a short blog for anyone interested....http://globaltherapies.blogspot.com/...horseshoe.html
he's No778 in the pic on the final descent. interesting to see various techniques for getting over the stile at the bottom, including one guy who failed to gain any height and ran straight into the fence...ouch! was that you barnyc?
wasn't me running into the fence - this time! though i did fall over a stile at Lamb's Longer Leg earlier this year...
Well well.. its amazing what you find while searching for the results...
I was suprised there was'nt a safety pin bin at regestration as there is around here...not exactly expensive are they!
This is 'now' the main fell club http://www.eskvalleyfellclub.org/ around here...free safety pins!......
i usually keep mine in the car too... only problem was i'd cleaned it out the previous week as i'm selling it....
thanks again for helping out Gord
I found a safety pin on the Lad's Leap descent last week. No reasonable offer refused, or else it's going on ebay.
has anyone got any more pictures than the link earlier in this thread? there was a chap who i saw at the stile at the top of the last descent...
I have a few....what was yr race number - I'll have a look through and see if I've got any of you. I'm yet to join the delights of flickr or something like that but happy to email pics
I see this is later than in previous years & reading through the thread / having run the area a bit I'm really looking forward to it. Done a couple of Holme Moss' and also the part from Black Hill over to Tooleyshaw but is there anything to know about the route other than up the PW & back down the other side?
I have OS of the area but if anyone has a map with the route showing a link would be much appreciated.
Doesn't look like rain dances will be needed this year!
I went round the route last week, and the second half is boggy to say the least. We will need a big shift of the jet stream and some serious winds for it dry out
who else is on for this on Sunday?
I'll be there :)
Reckon i'm gonna have ago at this on Sunday Daz.
dom - seriously? how we'd've laughed! will you be racing? :w00t: or photo-ing?
Mole - excellent - points-hunting for the Forum Champs eh? see you there :)
now... anybody I have a vague hope of finishing ahead of...? :D
another cracker today, the bogs were at their best up top! seeing Crowden looming into view on the return leg is always a real welcome site.
thanks Des and team.
Agree with Barney-top event, thanks to all the team. Never had so many falls in one race! Jacket spuds and cake to finish it off nicely:thumbup:
I missed the spuds and cake at the end - grabbed some bottled water and bailed for home. Bugger.
Great little run with bits of 4 Inns and Holme Moss
Special thanks to the marshals at Soldiers Lump - t'wasn't that nice up there at times. - Did I imagine the hail?
I got some hail too, on the way up to Westend Moss. Well it was either hail or big f off drops of rain.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the race. It was the first big fell race I've taken part in, having only done the Trunce and Jack Bloor previously.
Highlights for me included going thigh deep in bog on Tooleyshaw Moor, only to go waist deep in the next bog. I also enjoyed the fantastic descent back down to Crowden.
Great race today, really enjoyed it. First time for me. Having done the classic Holme Moss a few weeks ago I knew its was going to be another mud bath & we weren't disappointed. I had a good run considering a large amount of red wine the night before. Felt a bit rough on the first climb, but got through it, to up the pace from Black Hill to the finish, catching 3. Only had one tumble & managed to keep my shoes off the bog monster, for a top ten position. Well done to comic Des & his roadies for putting on a grand day out.
Many Thanks to Des and his team of helpers for a splendid race today!
In 5 years of fell racing, I have to say that that was the most mud I've ever brought back with me off the hill!
disappeared into a couple of bogs, and a couple of scrambles to escape peat groughs
took about 3 mins off my time from 2 years ago though, so well pleased
Also had a great time - had not run a race since....erm...Jan, so was a bit tentative. Forgot waterproof coat in rush out of door, but managed to borrow one of nice youth hostel, to stay legal on the kit. I did not actually fall over, but was witness to many in front of me - one such a wipe out, and so close, I only just avoided running over them!
Really enjoyed it, despite ankle going over three times (at least). Fantastic little route, and full of interest (and bog and water).
