Braver than me taking on 100, one day maybe.
Not looked in here for a while but just entered a bunch of LDWA events to prpepare for 3 maras in 3 days.
Wharfdale Marathon a week on Saturday, then 26m route of Osmotherley Phoenix, Marsden Moors Meander, Smugglers Trod, possibly In Pendles Shadow. Anybody got and words, good or bad on these?
In Pendle's Shadow is pretty low key. I can't remember if walkers and runners set off together, I think they do and I can only remember around 40 people at the start so it would only have been a handful running it. I was on my own for the majority of it. There were certainly quite a few more runners the year before. Sandwiches, tea and homemade cakes at the finish.
There's quite a few tricky bits across fields where navigation is slow unless you know where you are going. I'm used to following route descriptions on this type of event, but this one is too sketchy. Mark up a map and you should be fine.
It's a good route over a variety of terrain.
Cheers for the insights Tup and Steve. Will keep an eye out for cap'n Birdseye, and at least will now know I'm not hallucinating.
Been meaning to post this, but Rhayader mountain trail has been cancelled - just in case anyone was thinking of turning up on the day.
Lack of entries unfortunately.
That's a pity. I did it last year & thought it was pretty good - much wilder country than most trail events, some of it across featureless rough hill country with no paths in bad weather & poor visibility...
Mind you, I suppose that could have put some people off. I'd have entered this year but it clashed with the family holiday. I hope they try to get it running again next year.
We've always struggled to get entries for this event, don't know why because we put on a great course every year - and change it slightly each year to keep the interest up ..... or not:confused:. Also we need quite a few helpers and they are not forthcoming in numbers. Possibly it is simply too hard, remote and challenging for most people?
Anyway, we've given up the battle now, less than 10 entries 4 weeks before event was time for a decision :(.
I would love to put on a trail race there, incorporated the montrail/vasque series for 2 years and they really enjoyed it, and I have loads of potential routes up to 50 miles - but nobody to help organise!!
Sorry to hear about Rhayader - always seems to be a problem getting people to commit to help.
Doing peakers stroll on sunday - great race :)
sorry to hear about this
I was umming and ahing between Rhayader and Moors The Merrier, so hadn't entered in advance :o
will you be trying again next year?
might it be worth starting a separate "Save The Rhayader Mountain Trail" thread to get pre-entries up?
I would deffo pre-commit right now to run/marshal :)
11.30 - I mailed the organiser to clarify.
Molehill - Is it a case of there being a bit too much on at about the same time in the same area. With Malvern just gone, Caerphilly summits this weekend, and the RAWW a cople of weeks ago, thats four 30+ mile off road events in the mid/south wales area within a month. There aren't that many people who would be up for this sort of thing in the area. If it could be perphaps early or late summer there may be greater uptake? When the Likeys guys ran a December 40 mile event it sold out in a few days. If you do decide to run it again I'd be happy to help out marshalling, etc as we don't want to loose local events.
I think the Rhayader date was in August last year wasn't it?
that was better for me than mid-July, as I've got kids
August I could combine the event with a family weekend-break/longer hols
July I need brownie points for an away-day :D
The RMT has been going for years, guess I ran in it first 15 years ago? Was always traditionally in May, before the braken and tussocks grew too bad, and flies started. Then we moved it later because everyone wanted to do 'pre-hundred' 50s in May, so yes, dates been changed a bit over the years, but never made much difference as it's always been a struggle to get people to Mid Wales. Winter is a great time for ldwa events as everyone wants something then, runners and walkers alike are training rather than racing. Over the years have also lost Nev's Mid Wales mountain Marathon from Dinas Mawddy to Dolgellau (that was great in April over Cadair ;)), his Reservoir roundabout went - now resurrected by Carl Edwards, who in fact started the RMT all those years back. Always been a battle though, and a long winter event over the Elan, great but, just imagine where everyone would end up in bad weather , difficult enough getting some of the numpties round on a fine summer day.
No doubt it will be discussed later in the year.
I remeber the very first Rhayader Mountain Trail that was run in (I think) November (anyway a pretty wintery month)- It is the only event where I have deliberately left out a check point as my mate Jim and I struggled in the fog over the Rhiw Saeson descending some very steep bouldery slopes and decided that if we wanted to get home in the limited daylight - or indeed that week - we had better miss out Drum Ddu. It also had a check point near Llanerch Cawr that involved fording a river that was quite deep and wet on that particular day, checking in, having a glass of squash and a biscuit and then recrossing to the bank you started from. Ah those were the days when challenge events were real challenges.
just posted entries for myself and Lady Slugge for the Dovedale Dipper
anybody else doing it?
or done it in the past and handy hints...?
Did half of it last year & ran myself to a halt halfway round. No idea why: just one of those days when my body wasn't right. I'm aiming for 4h30m this year, but I'll probably be a bit slower. It's a typical peak district trail race, which means it's good to run, mainly on paths & tracks, & all runnable apart from the odd short steep bit. Quite a few runners, but nothing like the Grindleford Gallop, which has far too many. 99 "runners" completed last year, winner's time 3h48m, 33 completed within 5 hours.
Did this last year. Had to check out the route to remember where this one went, raced a fair bit in that part of the peak and difficult distinguishing which belongs to which :) Navigation was pretty easy, I was on my own a lot of it and didn't have any trouble.
It's pretty flat for the first bit, don't go too fast on the old railway and burn yourself out for later. It's nearly all good running ground, the only steep hill I can think of is out the Manifold valley to Ecton. I was feeling half dead by the time I reached Dovedale, it may only be along the river and flat to the finish but I found this stretch really hard so don't underestimate this stretch.
I'll most likely be doing it again this year.
i did it last year daz. Its near enough 4000ft of ascent and its all in the last half. Dont set off too fast i think i was 7:30 miling last year until about mile 18 and it all went wrong. Take on a lot of water at the stations as it was a hot day last year. Resist the temptation to really let loose on the railway track. And finally have a big breakfast because chances are you will be out for a while. Oh and when approaching nthe finish after you come up fronm the river. carry on along the road and dont turn left as the road descends back into the village (lost about 20mins last year)
Thanks for all the info guys! :)
email confirmations arrived, so Lady Slugge & I are in! http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...sed_smiley.gif http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...sed_smiley.gif
did 17 hilly Miles today, timed myself over the last 8M and was doing about 14min/miling, so hoping for about 6:00-6:30 at Dovedale methinks... 5:59 would be nice http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ink_smiley.gif
LOL! absolutely no chance Euph
I think you and clairster are basing your judgement of my pace on that one occasion at Hope Moors & Tors when I ran away from you both - but you were doing the long course and I was doing the short! ;)
anyway, have you got your entry in or what? :p
Lady Slugge is doing this off virtually no training, but I bet she still finishes stronger than I do... :o
Daz - Entry in, got the OL24 map today on a shopping trip in Beverley so figured it would be a waste of money not to enter. Also, not going to fork out four quid extra for entry on day
Cheers for advice on here, without being told it was very likely that I would sprint first half and then have to curl up and die at 23m :(
well I've spent the last week creating/marking up maps for Dovedale Dipper [geek_smiley]
and I've contour-counted it to be 3200ft ascent [supergeek_smiley]
the section between Revidge and Wetton (13-17M in) looks to be the hilliest
and I am NOT looking forward to the flat bit up Wolfscote Dale near then end - flat running on tired legs is my idea of HELL!
Euph/Splatcher/SteveS - see you at registration in Hartington Village Hall on Sunday then! :)
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/yorkshire...ale_dipper.htm gives the ascent as 4000ft, I'll happily take your measurement instead though :)
I think your right on the hilliest bits, certainly the steepest are on that stretch.
I'm in full agreement on the run back from Milldale, it's a long long way on tired legs and I was crying out for a hill. Until the hill actually came and I wondered why I'd wished for it...
I should be obvious as I'll be in either pink or lurid green pony colours.
right, that's it, I'm off work til next Tuesday now! http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ile_smiley.gif
packing car and going to see if we can find a campsite in the White Peak that isn't waterlogged!
I should be in horrific-green pony vest, so also easy to spot
Lucky Daz :( I'll be doing my prep on Saturday, probably make use of my new colour scanner/printer thing so I can draw a line on copies and not end up with more maps with lines all over for the various events over the north I've done! Seems like a good idea or one day I'll go miles off course following the wrong route around peaks/moors/dales
Liking the sound of the good footpaths/trails. The Last LDWA event I did was Moors the Merrier, it was a cracker but hard going in places and sometimes no distinguishable path. It was a reminder after easier navigable Osmotherley Phoenix and Wharfdale marathon that these things vary a lot.
See you Sunday - even get a slight lay in ;)
Quiet on here, anybody doing Marsden Moors Meander? new one for me.
I was thinking about it but found something dafter to do instead. I did another one organised by the same LDWA group last December - the Regular Irregular from Brockholes near Holmfirth. That was three different loops from the start point & I was the only runner as far as I know. Anyway I left everyone at the start - I think they were all walkers apart from 2 or 3 run/walk types. Friendly organisers, & the wettest run underfoot I've ever done. It was up to my knees in many places & it took 2 hours for the feeling to come back to my toes afterwards. I'm planning on doing it again this year :D
By the way whats your "dafter" option, I'm intrigued by anything thats a bit daft.... or muddy ;)
