I want to get some rollers... any advice on what to get Daz, or does any odd set do?
If I manage to get my car sorted for tonight, I am going to try and get ti Rollapalluza in Cardiff tonight... roller racing, should be fun :w00t::D
Hann they are all a bit similair to be honest. Ive only ever ridden about 3 sets in my life and cant actually say I noticed a difference.
Expect to pay £150 for a good set. Doesnt take long to master them but dont try doing no hands to quickly or you will end up flying across your room.
Nikalas may know as he could have actually tested some before.
You was talking about bike rollers I take it and not hair rollers ???????????.
If so I will have to make enquiries
These are probably the smoothest you can get but are pricey

For less cash, I quite liked these ones and the parabolic shape does make life a bit easier

Idiot question.
Whats the difference between rollers and a turbo....other than obviously on one your on rollers...and on the other your back wheel is just spinning.
Or maybe I should have said....should I get rollers or a turbo if I want to ride my bike when its pouring down outside.
That £150 roller....noisy?
If you can ride a bike in a straight line, you can ride rollers. It doesn't take too long to learn and it's complete nonsense about flying across your garage if you come off....
Rollers are great for balance, bike handling and developing a silky smooth "souplesse" pedalling style but you can't generate the resistances you can on a turbo.
Just been out for my ride. 55k and got battered by the driving wind and rain.:w00t:
Must do it though as I am aiming for 110k this week and my upwardly increasing scale.
Went on the old winter bike and I still like a lot of things about it compared to the new Cannondale.
One massive down is the saddle though, feels like I've been kicked in the sack.:o
Daz I agree with your comment on some cyclists and their choice of coloured clothing.
I was wearing my bright YELLOW montane atomic DT jacket and also had flashing front & rear cateye along with flashing unit attached to the back of my helmet.
Better safe than sorry.
Thanks for the advice on rollers guys... PBK had an offer on some snazzy looking tacx ones, so I have bought them :)
Yep Hann they are good as they are the same as mine. Good choice.
Just remember
before

good luck
After doing about 450 miles since a really good clean the Mercian needed attention. Tlc. So I Got bored earlier and stripped it down fully. Bottom bracket out, forks out, rear mech stripped and clean, cassette off etc etc etc. Listening to absolute 80s whilst I did it. Fully cleaned and re built within an hour.
Decided then to test it so did a full hour on the rollers
Gearing 53/19. Sweat everywhere.
50 very easy miles early this morning, what a lovely morning.
The peak district was sublime. Loads of bikies and road men and one quite slinky lady biker as well. She was quick too.
Brilliant sunshine.
Even had a cup of tea in the layby at the side of the river at whatstandwell.
Cmon get your bikes out the weather is lovely. You can do stuff like sewing another day
Oh how we laughed.
Bought some new frog lights for my bike yesterday, errrr well had to nip bike to the LBS today as I inadvertantly picked up 2 front frogs instead of a front and a back - oopsie. :o too busy looking for Christmas ideas!
Got my son some Skulls which I have to say for the money and convenience (i.e he can stash em in his school bag daily and lose them on a weekly basis) they are flippin bright as! Very impressed, much better than the frogs but I reckon I'm a bit too old to be sticking skull and crossbones on the front of the iron steed although they do come in pink
Track last night, three hours of it... well, I stepped off 15 minutes early and finished one of the exercises about 5 minutes early as I am still feeling hwacked and unfit. Good session though...
This morning I went out on the crosser for about 45 minutes and got it well muddy riding around some wet and muddy fields. Comedy moment as my landcruisers started slipping like mad on a steep muddy incline... felt like I was on the rollers, so could have saved me some money there LOL
Time to swap the Landcruisers for the Conti Pro Twisters I treated myself to after having to abandon 3 Peaks after one peak... :)
Club hillclimb tomorrow, should be fun :)
Had a good 67k ride out over the lunch time.
Down the Tod valley past the edge of Rochdale and Oldham then back over the moors to Yorkshire.
Just looked at the garmin and was pleased to see av speed of just over 15mph while av HR was only 131bpm.
Bloody hell :w00t: am I getting fitter:D
Just done my fav 25k loop. 350m ascent. Tail wind on the ups and just socialed with another cyclist on the down. Cool coming back in to the breeze.
Off to watch sons play football now.
A brisk 45 mile ride with Manchester Wheelers around the lanes near Jodrell Bank, 17.5mph average.
Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a new 9/10 speed groupset and wheels to an old steel frame from the 90s?
Felldonkey, first thing to think of is rear stay rear frame spacing, gap between rear dropouts. These ideally have to match your hub width on your back wheel. If your back wheel fits your away. If it don't then you can cold set it with a plank of wood. Basically and this is a trick I learnt at Raleigh. Lay the frame on it's side, put the 2x2 bit of wood either inside or outside the seat tube the if it's long enough either gently press down or pull up against the dropout. This will cold set the frame. Takes a steady hand and eye but it's fairly easy to do. Once you have the wheels in your frame your away. You can go from there. Brake caliper length may be an issue. If you need a longer drop to suit your rims , often this is a problem on old steel frames. Just get tektro calipers that suit 80mm drop.
Get your front and rear mech fitted and and that's about it.
Like I say , check your gap, fit your wheel and get a cassette on.
The front mech can be set with a ten pence piece, that's what I use. And then get your cables on and then adjust your gears.
Good luck
What frame is it
Oh and you need to check the alignment. Sorry forgot that. Been a while since I've done one. Most lbshops have performed the old cold setting trick and it was common years ago. Nowadays they just want to sell you a new frame and fork.
If you get that far just ask me and I will explain how to re align with a piece of string.
Thanks for all the info Daz, it's much appreciated. My frame is a Ribble Reynolds 653 made to measure when I was a juvenile. I only rode it for a season and then got scouted by a team and given a bike by them to ride so it's in really good condition. I'd hate to get ride of it. It's a lovely ride so if I could save up for a new groupset and update it that way I'd be made up!
After weeks of dithering with injury, work & weather issues, I finally got out on the new bike for one hour plus yesterday afternoon!
For years my old 531 'crosser was my bike for all occasions, but it could be a twitchy handful on steep descents with bends; constantly having to fight it!
What a revelation on the Planet-X Ti Sportive; stable yet agile, comfortable and relaxed yet responds to every pedal stroke. The Ultegra 10 x 3 groupset is really sweet and, after years of 'playing chicken' with the cantis on the 'crosser, the power of the Ultegra deep drop, double pivot brakes is just magic!
Daz, I'm guessing that is:- Tie one end to a rear drop out, up round the front of the head-tube, pull it tight down to the other rear drop out and tie it off ( use the same/corresponding point on both drop outs for tying off ). Then measure on each side of the seat tube ( squarely ) to the string. If both measurements are identical, then alignment is correct?
Ian.
Daz. I read an old post about when you were hypnotised.
Maybe that would help with all this bike stuff.
Yes that is exactly what you do.
You would be surprised how many times on nights Ive done that at Raleigh even on brand new frames when they have rushed them through and welded them OUTSIDE the jig:thunbdown:.
Sometimes also you have to file the dropout out and bend ( or tune it) with a special tool , err also known as a adjustable spanner.
I was in Mercian the other day mind and they had just done one that had been damaged.
Any of you lot ever cycled over the Trough of Bowland? (Obviously some of you will have).
Weather permitting, im going to have a go at evaporating my quads on sunday and try and drag myself over it. Im in the area (stoneyhurst college) and have time to kill...so I might have a bash.
I dont think my lowest gear isn't low enough...so it'll hurt!
