Yes I believe so Ian, although its hardcore rubble rather than paving. I suspect it will save 3 minutes or so as the distance is much the same but without the muddy drop down towards Sell Gill Pot.

I haven't been up PYG since the race last year where they took us a new route off the top.
But I don't remember following the wall as far.
Is the new route off the top of PYG revised again or is it just the map on the link has straightened out the lines a little.

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Evening all,
I have got myself into a bit of kafuffle with my parents visiting York for my mum’s Birthday on the days around the 27th of April…
I've looked at train times that morning and the earliest train to get in to the station at Horton is at 0959...
I have put a message out to runners in Holmfirth (as this is who I run with) if they know of anyone travelling over from York.
To cut a long story short... Is there anybody willing in the Fell community who is travelling from and back to York? I'd be more than willing to share fuel costs!
Likewise if you see this post and know of anyone who may not check the internet as regularly but is more than happy to share a lift please point them in my direction :) you can reply on here or email me at [email protected]
Many thanks,
Craig

I would normally be driving but am without car that weekend, so am also on the lookout for a lift from York (can get train back so you don't need to hang around for me as I trundle in at around the 5 hour mark!) So, has anyone got a couple of spare seats in a York car?

2011 I got exactly the same times but had to pack in at Ribblehead due to migraine symptoms. Confidence is low due to that but I really should get well under 5 hours this time hopefully. :)
So my advise would be to just steady up and down PYG, chug along to RH and aim to be something like 47 up PYG and 1:55 - 2:00 at RH and I think you will be on the money for a 4:45.

If I was you MG i'd just find WP at the start and follow him to the top of Ingleborough and take it from there, you'll not miss him on the start he'll be the one with about twenty layers of running gear on :w00t:

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I have been contacted by someone who is able to give a lift they are in the Strensall and they say they should have room for one more... if you're yet to be contacted... you can get me on my email and we can be put into the same email...

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I walked round on Saturday with a group(Bridge2Aid). Probably the best round I've ever had(and I've done around 50) views were tremendos, sky stunning, it was also the quietest, never seen it so peaceful and the most exciting......that climb up inglebugger OMG the head wall was banked out with hard neve. I saw few people back off it quite rightly and anumber at the top who didn't even give the descent a try. It was like climbing a gully in the lakes Awesome, the group loved it.
Bumped into quite a few recciers who I bade hellow to and chatted where possible. Hope the guy who was out with some wharfedale runners is ok. A few Abbey runners and a guy from Oldham who runs with P&B. Good to meet you all.
I found the new route below PYG to be quite good. much easier going despite the first little climb and certainly easier under foot.

Whitton, I marked out the top part of the descent from PYG to the finger post last year and all being well will be doing the same again this year. The route, unless I get told otherwise, will be the same as last year. See you on the finger post!

Hiya Ian,
Good to meet you on Saturday. There was a bunch of us from Trawden having a run round, one of us took a tumble at the bottom gate coming off PyG, and made a nice hole in his knee; we patched him up and off he went to A&E, luckily only 3 stitches (cos there was nothing else left to stitch, the rest of the flesh was still on a rock!), but he's hoping to be OK for race day.
Attachment 6896
As you say, superb on the tops, I can't believe how still it was, and the views were fantastic! Inglebugger was, erm, interesting. Someone's stolen the path  but good fun going up the wall. There was a group at the top when we got there debating which way to come down, we "advised" against it!
A great day out.

Good to meet you both. Although not the most interesting route to guide on There's always plenty of fell runners around to chat to. Good luck in the race.
Ps OUCH!!!! that looks nasty.Wish him a speedy recovery...

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Only thing bothering me, is the old footwear choice, all the off road training for the last few weeks has been in road shoes and on Pendle last Saturday I chose wrong and went for flats, the melting snow on the cart track stuffed me :o I know it's early doors but it's a long time running on the day to get the footwear wrong.

i think you had just passed us when you fell. you seemed OK and I thought you had run on. did not realise you had done so much damage unless we saw another runner fall at the same place?
I was leading a group of guys and gals round. one of the girls even got up the ingleborough climb dragging her dog with her. do reckon though if someone slipped at the top then would have taken the lot of us like a pack of dominoes. anyway they did it in 11 hours which was commendable in the conditions. doing it again next saturday with a load of teachers and nurses from Leeds.

I don't think it should bother you mate, it's what's in the footwear that counts ;)

No fancy dress for this one multi coloured?
Loin cloth, Santa or wise man?

If wearing the loin cloth and carrying a cross gets me a helping hand round you neve know :w00t:
Wonder what the record is for fancy dress at 3P ??

There was a woman in a fairy costume complete with wand going up Whernside in 2011. It spurred me on to overtake her! :D

flite 230 is my weapon of choice for the three peaks; very lightweight with just enough grip, even for a few boggy bits. Now down to £50 in a range of colours too!

Am I going to be better off in my Kanadia's rather than Mudrocs / X talons?

See what the weather is like between now and the race; out of the snow the paths are dry as a bone at the minute but rain might change that, you never know
-
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I was thinking the Flites might be left a bit wnating - if / when the snow all melts it will get quite boggy, however if most of the paths are hard-packed then this may not be an issue?
-
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I haven't been up there, but the snow melting is just running away here due to the lack of rain so the ground is firm - even the Bogs of Great Hill :D
I ran PPP in Kanadias once - they are fine except on wet rock and as you will find, even in dry conditions you can encounter wet rock as people walk through streams and then on to flags or stone tracks.
To be honest the tread on them is so minimal that I would suggest it's better to run in a better quality road trainer or Trail shoe if that is what you are comfortable with.
I don't think there's a right shoe for the race - it's what is the right shoe for you and the way you run.
-
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
The same is true on pendle, we had plenty of snow but the ground is rock hard, even on the exposed peaty sections.
-
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I've literally just arrived back home after running round this morning - the most spectacular day out on the 3 peaks I've ever had I think, just beautiful. I used More Mile Cheviot 2's today (pretty new) and was very impressed with their comfort on the hard stuff and grip on the snow and mud. Where there is no snow or melt water I think the going was as dry as I've ever seen, and of course the path improvements have got rid of some of the boggy bits. PYG to Ribblehead was definitely faster for me (a 4hr 50min plodder so a good thing as I'm never that far from the cut offs). Where the snow was melting it was pretty slippery in places. I ran from Ingleborough to Horton with a guy I met who was wearing road biased trail shoes and he slipped and fell 3 times (fortunately no harm done). I think I'll stick with my trusty Mizuno Wave Harriers on the day (unless it's very wet when I'll use the Cheviots)
-
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
As my alternative is Mudclaws it will likely be the trusty Wave Harriers for me also unless we have lots of rain. I've done long training runs in them & they've been good to me thus far.....

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I took a picture on the section between hill inn and Ingleborough yesterday, it was still pretty tricky https://www.facebook.com/racingsnake...type=3&theater

I'm not doing 3P this year, but I usually go for the Wave Harriers as the best compromise.
Wave Harriers are too heavy for a short race. But Mudclaws don't offer enough cushioning for me on a long race, particularly where there is lots of tarmac and hard ground like 3P. On balance, given the race distance, the tarmac middle section and the need for some comfort, I'd go for the WH. Used a pair of WH at 3P straight out the box one year and didn't get a single blister.

Do many people use the own drinks service at Ribblehead and Hill Inn ? Just wondering how reilable it is, Normally I carry my own but wouldn't mind shedding a bit of weight if possible
I stuck a post in lift share. Travelling up from stockport area if anyone wants a lift.

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Like you, I'd been cautious of using it in my first 3 races, but used it last year for the first time and it worked a treat - better than my legs anyway ;)

I used it on my first PPP, seemed ok, make sure your bottle is distinctive and well labelled though.
Not used it since because i dont carry water now, there's enough with the drinks stations for me.
-
Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
Definitely use the service, though you have to keep your wits about you to find your own drop at Ribblehead. Last time I wasted a couple of minutes searching until a bystander helped me locate my bottle 'n' banana.
By the time I reached the Hill Inn, it was a lot easier, since it was almost the only one left....:o

Re: 3 Peaks Fell Race 2013
I'm going to have to withdraw. Does anyone know if there is an official method via SiEntries. I looked today but there's nothing. I supoose an e-mail to the address on the site is the best bet failing any other way.

Yeah its great. I've used it a couple of times, just make sure its well labelled, a marshal kindly saw me running towards the drinks area and she located my drinks bottle and handed it to me without me having to break stride. I'll defo be using it again
