Thanks everyone for your kind comments and also to Merrylegs. It is still a catchy tune and intriguing to watch and those glasses have a mind of their own.
I intend to make three changes to the second half of the route when I can walk it out probably next week. This is only to try and ensure you all have a level playing field because each year someone finds a slightly better route so the details on the route will change. Nothing serious though.
Is the Hebden Route more or less the same as the Calder Valley Round ? I have done neither, I just wondered if I could use the excellent route details/GPX track for MemoryMap etc on the Hebden website as a guide for the Calder Valley Round as I found the description of the CVR a bit confusing in places ?
They aren't the same, but they have a lot of the route in common. The Hebden has an extra bit at the start, and an extra lot at the end, plus a number of minor differences along the way. I believe the two routes have some common ancestry, but they have evolved into separate species. It's pretty confusing when you know both routes - I can never remember which variation belongs to which route.
Has anyone done the Hebden (shorter or longer version)? To be held on 22nd January 2011. I suspect it's very tough, but there will be home-made apple crumble and custard afterwards. A better incentive than any amounts of T-shirts, medals etc in my opinion.
Did this last year and it's an interesting route but a great run all the same, i will certainly be running it again this year.
It's like the Calder Valley Round on steroids.
A great event, highly recommended. The organisers let you swap between the long and short and options, so if you're feeling knackered as you drop down from Blackshaw Head, and don't fancy the climbs up Stoodley and in Cragg Vale, you can decide to jog back along the canal.
A word of warning: enter early. It's very popular and people are turned away on the day every year.
I'm now really puzzled, because I took my own advice and went to Sportident to enter The Hebden. When I looked at the entry list, my name was already there! Is something paranormal going on? Is my memory going? Or have I been a victim of identity theft?
Alan G has confirmed that I've stolen my own identity. That'll be option B, then. At least I can say "I'm in!"
BTW, there is also a Hebden 2011 thread that was started several months ago. Maybe we ought to go back to that one to reduce duplication of services? This is Austerity Britain, after all.
I think that this is one of the toughest ones around - loads of climb. But lots of runners do it so it's a good one to do. The short loop is also good (sometimes on these events the short route misses out some of the best bits).
I'm in for 2011:thumbup:
It's a possibility for me, will see... Just a few days before my b'day! :D
Hi Alexandra, Here is Christine, You'll find me under Alpes de Provence. I've just registered.
Just entered. :)
Now I just need to make up for this years abysmal performance. :o
It's not an easy route, don't think I'd find my way round even though I did it last year! (with help!):o
I'm in!
I'm very tempted. See how I get on with the Wensleydale next weekend but need to prepare for the Trollers Trot in March too, so......did someone mention apple crumble and custard
BUT....looked at the times for last year...the fastest walker was 4hrs 35 mins!!!!!!! For 21 miles with over 4000ft of ascent??!!?? That's not a walk, that'll probably be faster than my run!!!
I entered today. Looking forward to a dripping sarnie or two :p
Me too on both counts. Mmmm, oozing with dripping but not dripping with ooze. Set out a bit lean and mean so you've got room to really appreciate it.
Anyone fancy a midweek recce of the course. Done it before but can't remember a few parts!
I'm in....good to see all the usual suspects have already entered. Looking forward to the hospitality, less so the actual running bit in between.
Keep hearing good things about this one, finally got an entry in before its full I think. Events from this area are always a good challenge!
This was always a great one to burn off the excesses of Christmas (when it used to be the first event of the year). Since it moved out a couple of weeks, it still was not one to be missed. I've never missed one. I will be there.
Many forumites doing this tomorrow? Looks like not a bad day for it. Might be quite hard underfoot early on.
Anticipating all that lovely food at checkpoint 3 already.
Mmmmm, dripping sarnies and stollen
Only about a trillion of us. I've a sneaking suspicion this one attracts more of us than any other. I seem to remember the most likely bit to be frozen is the climb up to the shoulder of Stoodley Pike later on. All that food going to waste as well (down the rest of you). I'll be the one on the the technical energy diet (Kendal Mint Cake).
Feeling a bit sulky about missing this for the first time in a few years.
Will try to shout a few words of encouragement and abuse as you all go past my house (bottom of Jumble Hole Clough).
Sorry you're missing it, Duff. If I knew where Jumble Hole Clough is I'd hurl some abuse back as I pass through. I can't find it on my Tracklogs printout.
I think Splatcher is right. It's a BIG turnout of runners and forumites. Looking forward to it.
See you all there :D
Hey Duff - perhaps a quick gander www.heptonstallfellrace.org.uk will cheer you up??? The route is equally complex at times. A huge written route description will keep you busy for the next 2 months. Heptonstall Fell Race is on March 20th.
Oh I am doing this one! My first LDWA - with my friend training for my first 50 in March - looking forward to it!
See you all in the morning, nice and early!:D
Ahh, I see. Checkpoint 3 in the woodwork shop with the good nosh! Just over 10 miles in. I'll be on the lookout.
