Hi Paul
I think me and Nicky will be there also, I've not been able to train much for the long stuff recently so I'll see how fast I go:o

Hi Ian, you've probably found this by now but.... LDWA site and http://www.theirregulars.org/
Just marked route on maps (OL1 and OL21) and looks to be a lot on high moorland north and south of M62 west of Marsden, so certainly could be a soggy one as Splatcher mentioned. Also large sections on pennine bridleway which will hopefully ease navigation - though I tend to get lost at "easy" bits yet somehow keep track over barren moorlands, probably through sheer dumb luck.
Good to hear a few runners there, didn't fancy being the only one bolting off away from all the walkers and annoying CP staff when I arrived before opening times. :D
They may be surprised at the number & speed of runners. Looks like there'll be a few of us. I don't think I'll arrive at the checkpoints before the opening times, but it's possible for CP4, & if any of you are fast runners I imagine you'll be there well before 12. If so, warn them it might happen at registration & plan to drink from the streams. It's the first time this route has been run, & I think it's the only long run in the area this weekend. As I said in an earlier post, I did one of this group's events last year, & I was the only runner.
A lot of it won't be too muddy I suspect. There's a fair bit on the Pennine Way, so the wet bits of that will probably have been surfaced. I don't think the first few miles are too bad either (i.e. heading north), as I've done them before. Wet patches, but not too bad. Stony tracks rather than bogs. MInd you that's a few years ago so I could be remembering wrong.
I've read some where they were advertising on the runners world forum so I would expect a few more runners. Nicky called the organisor earlier to advise him that 'some' runners 'may' 'possibly' be at CPs before the marshalls.
Bed now say hi if you see a brown vest...:D
The Irregulars were manning the CP at Bolton Bridge cricket club at last year's Yoredale 100. Nice bunch of people - it'll be a good event ;)
No problem with marshalls not being there. superb hospitality, breakfast before the race and a spicy past stew afterwards and is it me but tea tastes SSSOOOOOOOO much nicer after a hard run.
Friendly marshals and good mix of food on route.
Route was pretty good, nice course and a good mix of terrain if a little flat for my personal tastes. One to reccommend.
Met Splatcher in the toilet:o and Strider outside.
Ran with Strider for quite a while, I might even see him tomorrow something about a Belper Bash
I agree, a good little event and an interesting route. Bit towards, under then back over M62 maybe not the most thrilling but its interesting to have run this area. Now I can bore friends endlessly on every Aitport run I ever make :p I thought the route picked up after CP2, some nice moorland and valley running. Not muddy at all really, which I was expecting and very runnable which is nice as I'm not too knackered now.
Enjoyed those last few downhill and level miles past the res's as I had plenty of running in legs. To me it seemed this event was more down than up  I can only think this was due to very steady climbs - no long hard ones - and shorter, steeper descents. Thankfully finished before getting too wet. Usual good fare at CP and end that you get from an LDWA event. Cheese sandwiches, flapjack and chocolate crispies were amongst my samples - so much better than gels and energy drinks.
Sorry not to introduce myself to anyone at end (if you were around). I was into my food, quick chat with a guy who finished about my time and then rushed off to catch Hull game on radio on way home.
you must have come in near the front as the rain just started as I finished. Where were you sat, I was next to Nicky(only girl runner at the front) in the orange t shirt with Strider on my left
Just read the last paragraph!! Did you followed me at the finish White top and ran for east hull harriers?
Agreed - good event, great food and very friendly marshalling, all the way round - well done the Irregulars!
Roll on the Belper Rugby Rover tomorrow..... I just need new legs to grow overnight.
P.
How did Belper go?
Hi DE
the guy who came in second was from Hull he'd followed me for quite a while for the last 8 miles, I just managed to pull away near the end. I remember now that he said he was a lurker on the forum but was defo from Hull.
I didn't make Belper too tired from the daughter sleepover:o
And that was me in between, dripping into my bananas & custard. Good to meet you all. Good event, even if I didn't think I ran well enough. Ian: you haven't convinced me to enter Tanky's, not this year anyway. Navigating across Kinder without a path got crossed off my favourites list when I walked the Pennine Way at the age of 17. Strider: hope Belper went OK.
I feel fresher today that I did on Friday: not sure what to make of that really. I still don't know whether to have a go at the Over the Hill next Saturday, but I probably will if the weather looks reasonable.
Spent the day supermarket shopping for the family & fixing my home PC: been using my work laptop for the past couple of weeks. Took it to bits, vacuumed out all the fluff, & now it seems to be working OK. So I hit the LDWA website to sort some events out for the winter, i.e. post-OMM. I picked:
6 Dales Circuit, 14 Nov. Did this last year, & it's a good one, apart from the slippery limestone up Biggindale at the end (which was horrible).
Regular Irregular, 12 Dec. Did this last year, mostly underwater. Laugh? I nearly did.
Reservoir Roundabout II, Rhayader, 9 Jan. Haven't done this one, but the Rhayader Mountain Trail last year was good, & the OMM's there this year too. Those hills are an interesting navigation challenge even when the clag isn't down.
Hebden, 23 Jan. What can you say about the Calder Valley eh? I used to live there, and there's not a level surface anywhere. The runs all seem to be on the hard side, & the Hebden's no exception. I pulled a calf muscle on frozen cattle hoofmarks last year & had to pull out half way, so this is a grudge match.
Anglezarke Amble, 13 Feb. Not done this one, but there's good moors around there.
South Shropshire Circular, 27 Feb. Not done this either, but I fancied a change of scene, & there are good hills around Church Stretton.
Kipling Kaper, 27 March. Hail & snow hit me 26 miles in last year - lovely. Has to be done.
Interesting race for a number of reasons.... well organised, signed and marshalled, but the start and first two km was horrendous, and not just because of the 22miles in my legs from the previous day.
We were sent a hundred yards down a road, to come round a roundabout and back on ourselves, and then we had numerous bottlenecks over bridges, stiles and gates..... we didn't start running properly for about 20 minutes. Surely there must be a better route for the course...?
Overall, the event had too much tarmac and dull field running, again with lots of gates and stiles to break the flow, and the best bits only came late on, with the run through Shining Cliff woods and back along the canal. However the weather was pretty perfect and I manged to up the pace for the final 6k, so it has been a nice confidence booster before the Eagle Isle Ultra in 3 weeks time. Legs are pretty shot tonight, though.

Hi Ian
Thought i would join up to forum seen ive been lurkin on for the last few weeks, I followed you in at Marsden with the white top on from East Hull Harriers, like you say we ran together for the last 8 mile or so.
Hi DE
Did not get chance to talk to you ,but did se you as i was leaving ,you looked soaking wet in your humber bridge 10k shirt. Are you doing Rudolfs Romp?
Hi Strider
Dont know how you managed to run again the next day, my legs was shot just recovered now. good luck with the ultra Paul
There were a lot of runners this year, it's certainly picked up popularity massively since I did the first one about 4 years ago. The out and back around the roundabout was put in a couple of years ago to break the field up a bit before the bridge and first gate. If you're near the front it's not a problem, but not everyone has that option :) I'm struggling to think of another (safe) way to get over the river starting from the Rugby Club.
I think that's a little harsh - it's pretty much what I'd expect to find in this area. It's always going to struggle to be as good as something in the Peak district for terrain and scenery. (don't know here the boundary is but this must at the best be only just inside).
It depends on what you're used to - it's a very popular event among road runners are those I spoke to were very complimentary about the course. The not too severe terrain appeals to them. I heard a few saying how tough they thought the route was :) We just get spoiled with running in some of the best parts of the country.
Is that really that much tarmac on it? It's a longish stretch around the first checkpoint, there's a bit near Alport Heights and a bit on leaving Shining Cliffs before dropping to the Derwent. 2 miles maybe? I've certainly done LDWA events with more, and this is co-organised by a mostly road running club. They must be doing something right getting that many people there, even if the route is not quite to our cup of tea.
I also did the Rugby Rover too. There was a lot more tarmac than I expected. I'd have been better off in road shoes (if I had any) as my feet were as sore as hell over the last 2 miles :( I reckon there is about 4 miles of tarmac but there is also a lot of hard packed trail too. Organisation, way-marking and marshalling was excellent though. Never had to use the map at all and there were loads of jelly babies to scoff! :D. We were warned that it was muddy but it wasn't, my shoes were still as clean at the finish as they were at the start! It's a good event as long as you go with the expectation of a long multi-terrain run rather than a tough fell race. IMHO
May be a bit of a travel for some of you but its Smugglers Trod next w/e. I tripped over to Sedbergh today and did Burnsall classic + 10m yesterday so this will hopefully be a doddle in comparison.
This is on Sat 12th Sept. 20 miles.

Martin - may possibly be doing this as a training run.
Changing subject, Re. maps - I have an old map of N.Y.Moors easten Area dated 1983 I am considering using for Smugglers Trod. Should probably get a new one, but paths seem to exist between CP on this map and I don't suppose they change that often for most part? Anybody have any horror stories caused by navigating from old maps?
Be aware that some of the plantations marked on old maps have been cleared relatively recently ;) I was up that way in February and it was potentialy confusing
Lovely event; you'll enjoy it. Just save a bit for the climb out of Robin Hoods Bay near the end
I got mighty confused navigating on a walk around derbys with a map that didn;t have carsington resvr on it! Took me a fair while to think to check the date of the map, which, of course, predated the lake! Imagine a sodding big lake appearing in front of you that's nowhere to be seen on the map?
Spatcher - if you want to do the South Shropshire Circular - get your entry in. There are already 60+ entries - they only accept 200 - and places tend to get snappped up around the time of the Long Mynd Hike (first Saturday in October)
Any interesting LDWA events coming up over the next few months, preferably in the North West, which allow runners?

Blimey Daz have you seen my diary?!! I've entered most of those events and agree that they have lots of runners. Not done the 6 Dales, Brockholes or Rhayader ones before so don't know about those. Hebden, That's Lyth and Rombalds probably have the most runners.
Also coming up week on Sat 31 Oct, Bottoms up Haloween from Hoghton, Blackburn. Few of us who did the Round Rotherham (any one seen the the photos??) hope to do it. Let me know if you want a map, just making one up.
I did that last year. Only did the half though.
Nice route.
Mostly fields for the first half until you hit witton park where you skip through feniscoles and along the tow path for a few miles.
As for where it goes after that...i havent got a clue.
Nice friendly organisers and nice grub.
This should help ;)
