Aye, a bit of everything: 2 climbs that aren't too challenging (well, there's worse on the same hill!); bit of boggy, tussocky ground; lovely descent; cracking pub at end!:D
If you're a fit runner, you should be able to do it (not saying it'll be easy mind).
Why not try and get on a recce - there'll be quite a few going out this weekend? Where are you based? What's your background?
Aye, I agree with Softies sentiments above, I wouldn't say its too hard, you'll love it!
If your used to running say a half marathon distance, this would be a nice one to start with, barring the 2 climbs, its all really fast runnable stuff :)
BTW are you running this SS, or is it HPM weekend?
HPM wkend. Was idly thinking I might finish HPM, then make it back for HTOP! Given snow (and own considerable physical limitations:D), this ain't gonna happen. Can't say I was entirely serious mind...
Thanks all - in terms of fitness no problem, my background is ahem er ... road running and I'm also a triathlete.
I was thinking more of the navigation and how difficult that would be. Doubt I will get the chance to reccie the route I'm afraid.
Navigation is pretty good unless the clag is down. Most of the time you'll be in sight of other runners but if things get too spaced out you might have one or two worrying moments. As fell races go it's not too hard but has all the right ingredients - a big first climb that is annoyingly runnable, a long long fast descent disecting Pendle along its whole length, a knackering but shortish second climb, a hop across the top to a bonkers brain off brakes off descent followed by a nice run in. Plenty of bogs on top if a thaw sets in. What more could you ask for :D
Thanks all for the advice, I'll get my application off today as there's only a few days to closing.
Enjoy yourself. I still manage to get lost between CPs 1&2 if I daydream, despite the fact this is the only hill I ever run on:o. You'll probably be alright following someone else tho'.;)
Btw, has anyone warned you of the fell-running tradition of first-timers wearing fancy dress and getting the drinks in at the end? No?:D
Does anyone know where I can find a map of the route? Pete Bland's site says they're out of stock.
Thanks
Not fit enough this year but i notice this is a favourite with many. What makes it so good and what sort of terrain is it. Boggy, rocky etc. As may do it in the future.
Correctamundo. Get to the bottom of Geronimo, through the stile, follow the wall on your right around until you pick up a great path back to the start through the farmers' fields. If it weren't for HPM I'd be interested in seeing how quick you could do this.;)
Well I've bitten the bullet and got my entry off - seen the descent on Youtube. Looks a great laugh.
My cheque hasn't been cashed yet, and it looks like it isn't entry on the day this year.
Before I ring the RO and annoy him, has anyone else's been cashed?
Oh Yea well good laugh!
I'm new to this silly downhill stuff, in fact I think I can climb Geronimo quicker than I can descend, & I've been trying to practice it too!
For reference I'll be the softie in the Trawden vest crying for his mum! Rest assured you'll make at least one place up on that hill :)
It was a bit of a mare the other day when the snow was down, especially with worn studs.............
Should be details online.
My CTJM run tomorrow will be the Half Tour route. Details on Care to Join Me? thread.
Not sure how they are going to route this race this weekend.
Still massive drifts down the wall side from CP1 into the stream gulley which makes for interesting running :)
But as for the rest of the course...fast, very fast!
Been up there a few times lately, and getting down and across the stream has been "interesting" with those drifts!:)
Not sure what conditions have been like over the weekend, but we went up on Friday, got caught in absolute blizzards, knee-high soft snow on the top, and we made a hasty retreat off Big End.
Hoping this weekend is going to be a bit easier!!:)
I'd prefer heavy fog and a medium covering of snow please. Come the barbecue summer you'll all be anchoring for a bit of cold and good old fog!
We had a good day up there yesterday in the snow. quite deep in places with a tiny topping of ice, which = red shins for those of us not sensible enough to don full length bottoms.
Runnable in most bits with a few fantastic snowy descents. Stream crossings were ok, all in all a great day out.
It probably does, you know what these nutters are like, but suffice to say I'll be wearing leggings, unless the forecast changes dramatically. If it's anything like Saturday & yesterday it'll be rather chilly. I'm not bovvered about looking 'ard, I just want be relatively warm :D.
It will need a big thaw to get rid of all the snow & it's not looking like that's going to happen (source: Metcheck!), & if it does go then it'll be an even bigger quagmire than usual!
Is there any news on whether the 300 limit has been reached?
is it worth us putting an entry in the post now today (1st march) or just entering on the day?
thanks
Alfa, i did the route on sunday and the first climb from buttocks farm there was deep snow in places which made it extremely hard work from checkpoint 1 to 3 it is quite good the trod is pretty clear so is quite fast running, Geranimo is still covered in snow though so fell shoes are a must and even then your still struggling :D
Can you enter this race on the day?
As I have left it too late to pre enter
Take a look at the 1/2 tour race thread as it has been mentioned on there. Answer is possibly, will depend on number of pre entries and if you can it usually costs twice as much.
Your best off contacting the organiser mate, not heard anywhere that its full, and with the many other races on that day, it would be fair to say, there might be some places left, but check first. :)
If you go to the Clayton website there is a number to contact about helping with the half tour on the homepage...maybe that person might know?
Can't see any other numbers.
That first climb looks....'interesting'.
It's not so much for the cold you need the leggings (unless of course it does get colder). We were up on Sunday and stood up by CP1 taking in the views we all commented on how mild it was up there. Obviously this might change though. It was more to protect your shins from getting scraped as they carve into and back out of the snow, particularly if it freezes again, as this will give the snow a nice sharp scrape-your-flesh-off crust. Course, this gives some nice war wounds to show off after the race!;)
Why so Al? It's all fairly tame, snow on that section not too bad.
