I've also got a new...
....running friend.
As Stolly started a thread for his Harry...I thought my new addition needs showing to the world.
Nealry a year ago I was at Gummers Howe race at the bottom of Windermere and Nat White was there with her new puppy. It was a German Shorthaired Pointer and the pup was a Beaut.
Then, at this years Coledale Horsehoe either Nat's dog 'Rosa' or Rosa's auntie 'Val' came up to see me before the race. This totally sold the breed to me, and I convinced my mum and dad.
On saturday I picked up this little beauty.
Ive decided to call him Joss after the Legend. Its a massive cliche and im abit embrassed to tell the fell running lot that ive called him that...but ive got him to come running with me in the fells so its apt. really.

Re: I've also got a new...
Sorry for the hack, thought I would just slip it in subtle like! Did I say we had a new kitten as well? Cats are crap for going running with though but I think any plans I may have had for getting a dog are now shelved on quite a high shelf!
Happy dogging Al, by far the cheaper option!

I do not go dogging, but as Em knows that takes place just outside Belmont.
Have you been looking at kids bikes yet Ady? :D

Re: I've also got a new...
Back on thread, off to look at a Patterdale puppy tomorrow, should have been doing a 75 mile bike ride but feel rough, probably a shock to my system working again.
Anyway, kids, Mrs and me are all keen to get a dog, any advice on injections and the like when getting a puppy, want to do the job right and give it a good home.

Re: I've also got a new...
I'd drop Longdogs a pm with any questions... she was super helpful with my questions about how much to exercise my pup.
-
Re: I've also got a new...
also... the most important thing from the books I've read and from advice from the breeder is socialisation, socialisation, socialisation. Don't just leave it to chance to encounter other dogs, kids, bikes, people in wheelchairs, horses etc but go out of your way and make it a positive experience, get kids to give the pup treats etc.

Re: I've also got a new...
Thanks for the advice nikalas ;-)

Re: I've also got a new...
Merry,
My pup recieve his first vacination on tuesday; 8 weeks. In two weeks time he cane have his final jab and then after a further 2 weeks he can go outside of our garden.
Although, I was speaking to my dad's mate yesturday who got a litter of springer spaniels which are waiting 4 weeks between 1st and 3nd vacination as apposed to my 2 weeks?
Make sure you've got plenty of toys Merry, my pup is cute and cuddly 70% of the time, but he has these serious nutter modes where he wants to fight/bite the hell out of me. Uusally about 7am and then again at 11pm.
Oh, and carrots are a god send.
As for exercise, ive also asked Longdogs and consulted google and the like and forget about running with him for a very long time. Way over a year.

Re: I've also got a new...
Welcome to the dog club merry :D.
Harry is 'harrying' along nicely nowadays and, when he's not being completely mental, loves playing rugby in the field out back, running/fannying about in the hills and swimming/ wading through becks. A real Wilderness Explorer..... and a sometime large pain in the arse

Get some steak puddings down him - he looks like the master! :D

Re: I've also got a new...
nice dog. don't be embarrassed about calling him Joss, it's a good name. mine is called Jerry (springer). I hasten to add he came from a rescue centre with that name, and at age 6 i didn't think it fair to change it. He used to be a good running partner, but a couple of months ago while on a run he decided to just sit down and refused to run any further up the hill. he is nearly 10 now so i guess that's fair enough. still, he'll happily chance after a tennis ball like a mad man.

Good choice Merry ive also got a Patterdale just gone 2years, shorthaired and longlegged cracking dogs, make sure you trin it well from an early age as there hard to train. Ive been told the Pointers are also hard to train Al so try training them early.. good luck there great fun good company :))

How was her first night.
My pup cries and cries and cries at night.....the only way to get any sleep is to shove him in my bed. Not a good way to go on but my body was starting to fall apart with the lack of sleep.

Nice pooch Merry. My brother said he was looking at some German Shepherds the other day, so may have a dog again soon. Mind you I'm only assuming he was referring to the canine variety:eek:

Re: I've also got a new...
Well having enrolled Harry for an intensive puppy training course – an hour every Monday night for 8 weeks – on his second session last night he blew it big time! It was inevitable I guess but, despite his good early performances, I think the build up, the over the top expectations of the stolly household, the other better coached pups, their superior ball play and their ability to simply trot in a straight line that was all too much and Harry did a puppy equivalent of a Rob Green.
He’d started okay with some nifty sits and come heres but they all went unnoticed unfortunately, mainly when the puppy drill sargeant lady was paying attention to other pups. As soon as the spot light was on Harry and he was asked to simply trot alongside my daughter up the other end of the village hall he went limp, splayed his legs like a polar bear fire side rug and would only make forward motion by being dragged, sliding on his belly on the polished wooden flooring. We should have left it there and moved on but, no, the drill sargeant got out toys and stuff to galvanize Harry into action but it didn’t happen and he managed to turn a disappointing situation into a virtual disaster. Maybe he just doesn’t have that skill set yet :D
More positively when off the world stage Harry was amazing when we trotted back home over the tops from Langcliffe village hall. He displayed fantastic close control, running free past a fair few skittish sheep and older lambs without chasing after them even when they bolted. I think he’s just not used to the military style discipline of puppy school and is more of a free spirit surfer dude of a pup :)
