I thought permissions were harder round there - there were huge areas out of bounds when the KIMM was in the area in 2005, and the didn't the Saunders this year have to change their courses due to last minute withdrawal of permissions?
Anyway, I'm in, though still injured so will probably end up treating it as a fun walking weekend.
I'm in too. Can't wait. just need to get a lighter tent...
I'll be there running solo, billy no mates.:(
I'm also running in the Billy category.
Me and Stef will be there, can't remember which category we're in.
only a week to go and i've had an email from the D&W team with those final details, can any one open them. I've had no luck either as a link or going to the website.
i am in the billy no mates catagory. good job too as i think i would be too slow for anybody else to run with.apart from the wincle trout a few months ago this will be my come back race from may 2009's broken ankle.distance training has been going ok but i am still well over weight and not up to speed yet
I'm in the solo class as well, looks like it might be a lot colder than last year so warm jacket going in the pack for the chilly night ahead.
Rich
I used a single skin tent last year, I wont make that mistake again Very cold ended up using my survival bag as well so ended up wet and lukewarm till it was daybreak.
I'm out with a crap knee :(
Have fun (but not too much or I'll be even more pissed off!)
I'm out as well. Gutted, been looking forward to this for some time.
Oh well, there's always next year.
Well... that was tough. Finished on 360 for the weekend. Made a big over estimation on day 1 going from Hayeswater up Hartsop Dodd and then round for the 50 pointer on Ulswater. What I thought would be a long, steady track run was a pretty rough, undulating slog! And no end of walkers/children/dogs to dodge along the way. 225 for the day, but 15 lost for being 9 minutes over... I had to sprint the last couple of hundred metres to get in before the 10+ minute big penalties kicked in.
Day 2 I was more conservative in light of the previous day's expolits, but then ended up with 42 spare minutes. Had toyed with going out of my way for a 25 pointer and thought better of it... shame as it turned out I probably would've got it ok. 150 for the day. So at least 40 points lost over the weekend that another time I might've got, but I guess everyone suffers the same over/under estimation and frustration of potential points lost.
I got to the 50 pointer early on and was heading for the stream junction below the knott when common sense kicked in. it was a long way round the OOB area and there was no way I would have made it back in time. Still a poor first day for me 195 points but went really well on the second 170 I think and could have had another 40 if I'd of had the bottle to go for it. But thats what these thing do to you run all weekend and be 15 minutes late and the whole event has been thrown away.
Good event though with excellent wether. Campsite was excellent, we had our own private stream in the far corner of the field. But the night was a bit too chilly for a good nights sleep.
We had a cracking weekend. Played it far too safe on Saturday and limped home on day Sunday but enjoyed some Quality time in the Lakes.
I made a right cock up of saturday coming in 29 mins late with 190 point penalty leaving me with 5 points and a huge blister, had a cold nights sleep then hobbled back to the finish in a straight line picking up 1 control feeling very foolish, last year I was 15th in solo vet this year I wouldn't be surprised if I were last.
c racking event, was a bit chilly saturday night to say the least! there were a few out of bounds areas not so bad though, made one stupid navigational error on day one which i kicked myself for, day two better, oh and fell boy, are your ready to do the OMM with me?
Me and Stef were a little over ambitious on day 1 and once we realised we'd lost all our points we saunted back nice and steady and just enjoyed the fells, we thought there was no point rushing back only to sit in the cold tent all night, might as well be playing out. We redeemed ourselves on day 2 by being very careful and came in 20 minutes ahead of time with 85 points, so all was not lost. We had a fabulous time in the hills and the weather and views made it even better. It was very chilly through the night but we did manage to get some sleep.
well i am impressed by the number of points some of you collected. Even more by how many some of you lost  it makes my meagre total seem reasonable ( 140 on day one and 105 day 2 ). i always have problems deciding on a route at these events. it took me 20 min at the start day 1 and then i changed my mind about going e of haweswater so missed the easy 10 I had decided to collect on the way back..... That descent into hayeswater was a right knee cracker and no mistake...
A friend did a similar ( ok identical route to below angle tarn but then spotted the 50 pointer nw and went for it I didn't see it or probably would have thought it too far, he got it and another to collect 200 pts but as he said the longect run in in history 70 min from the last checkpoint.
It was a funny event as you had to make your choices early as there was little close to the camp site to pick up if you wre early, that accounted for a lot of no pointer I think people trying to pick up points far of and leaving little time to get back.
So you were the antisocial b's in the far corner of the field;) you were so far of you could have had an extra control. Long walk to the loo though:o
two good days out though.
I agree the (good) planning made it hard to put a route put together. I never felt totally happy with my choices and spent a lot of time wondering whether I'd have been better off elsewhere. It's amazing how you see some options in hindsight that you didn't spot at the weekend... or at least look back and think why did I choose that!?
Results are up
22nd for me so a good recovery from a first day position of 45th out of 268 finishers
...and some pictures, Datts in there and some dodgy bloke with a heart problem
Did they not have separate classes for mixed/vets this year?
There were prizes given in the different classes, it's just the lists displayed grouped everyone together (with a class column so you could see who was what). And, yes, there were some pretty brutal descents! There was a 40 point control on top of Hartsop Dodd which I went to from Hayeswater. Then it was straight back down in to the valley... my legs were suffering after that.
I though about it, but it there was no easy way to get back to the camp after Hartsop Dodd if time was short. I'd have been better forgetting the 40 pointer and going for the 35 near Angletarn Pikes and then on round Ulswater and possibly up on to Beda Fell before camp... I certainly wouldn't have lost any time doing that. Live and learn though, eh!
Yes a few did, but it was a long way out. I went to the top left and took the big ones round Ulswater. I pushed on to the knoll by Angle tarn and started to head to Hayeswater before common sense kicked in and I returned via Beda Head Cairn.
haha, from the comfort of my arm chair the route we chose still looks do-able....we lost half our points on d1. when will we learn! but another stunning weekend in the lakes. the organisers must have some kind of pact with the weather gods ;)
its probably the blood sacrifices that do it.
i only hope the other mountain marathons allow solo entries in future, i personally find that much more fun
I'm curious as to people's route choices on day 2. I was 3rd Vet after day 1 with 235, so I went for it on day 2 - going over Angle Tarn and Hayeswater to the big 40 pointers on Gray Crag and Blea Tarn, with one final push to the 30 above the Eagle OOB. Finished with 4 mins to go, but only 170 pts - ended up 4th Vet by a few points. Pushed it much harder on day 2, so presume a more northerly sweep of the CPs was the more productive?? My 3rd time on the RAB - for me the best and most enjoyable event on the calendar (the weather helps!!).
