F2S for the Broadband service http://www.freedom2surf.net/ and still have most email accounts with Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange. Very happy with F2S, and the odd time we've had a problem, they've been prompt to follow up with BT over line problems. We would have moved away from BT for the line rental long ago, but we've apparently got "an incompatible product or service on the line".... according to BT.
The incompatible product or service is probably the broadband service, but BT seem incapable of working out what it is (or telling us what it is!), and I'm not prepared to move from F2S just to escape BT's clutches even though it's BT are making it very difficult to get away!
Onetel. They are great, even after being taken over by Carphone Warehouse. Have been with onetel for nearly 10 years now. They have never let me down.
AOL Broadband and no complaints, does OK.
Orange, formerly Wanadoo and before that Freeserve.
Seems ok but I am having problems with Outlook Express at the moment.
Can receive messages but it won't send them:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop3.freeserve.net', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
Can send if I go into my email on the Orange site.
Anyone know what to do?
It will be something to do with Options/Accounts I think.
Swoop,
It could be to do with your firewall settings, i'd look there first.
I have been with AOL all my internet life but I may change soon.
Two reasons:
1. I can get a far better deal from other ISPs
I should be paying £25.00 per month but I am refusing to pay for the reason stated below.
2. AOL took over four months to sort out a broadband problem.
The problem was between AOL and BT but both parties claimed that my computer was at fault. It took a demand for £1,000 from me and a threat of a court case (for failuring to provide the contractually correct service) before AOL eventually sorted the problem out. I am still waiting for an apology and compensation from AOL.
Thunderbird!!
swoop ditch outlook express mate
just use your wanadoo e mail ;)
Avoid Plusnet !

I have found they are all as bad/good as each other.
Having used or supported users on half a dozen ISP's they are all much of a muchness.
In the majority of cases unless you have cable (NTL/Virgin - hopefully customer service has got better  ) the broadband will use the BT backbone - which as Marvin has found, in the case of problems they will be difficult is they want and play you off against your actual ISP.
I did get a good deal out of BT when I switched from Orange (as their (Orange) tech support was condesending and feeding me utter tripe ), free wireless access at their hotspots (usefull when the 3G card gets crap reception in the Lakes :) ) cheaper rental etc.
It's a lottery...good luck!
Onetel charge me for calls I don't make and an internet service I don't have. Continually. Then refuse to admit that their "automatic billing system" might be at fault. Then refuse to get the supervisor. Then pretend that they can't hear what I'm saying to them and hang up.
Avoid them at all costs - they are nothing short of criminals in my opinion.
Really sorry to hear that TF. It just goes to show what a lottery it is.
Do not EVER EVER EVER go with TalkTalk.
Virgin is a good bet, but check out this site first and make your own mind up

Hello,
We've gone with Orange/Wanadoo. Absolutley no probs over the last 2+ years. Doddle to set up the wireless connection too (as long as you request a livebox).
On the otherhand, we have BT Broadband in the office and, although the line is OK, if anything goes wrong then they're bloomin' useless. We had a mad stormy week in Feb this year and all BT lines went off. When they did come back on it took 'em best part of 6 weeks to sort it all out.
As has been said previously, they seem pretty much of a muchness and all have horror stories.
Hope I never need to call Orange/Wanadoo support! :D
There you go, now I've jinxed it....! :(
Swoop your problem is nothing to do with Outlook Express or your service provider, well it kind of is, but it's not a fault. I don't know all the ins and outs of how it works, but to reduce spam you have to use the smtp server of your internet service provider, not your email account provider. If you change your server from smtp.freeserve.net, or whatever you quoted to smtp.orange.net (I think!) that should fix it.
The situation I have described has been the case for a number of years, but it's only recently that the freeserve servers have been closed to their own customers only.
I feel like I've said this before, tho maybe to someone else on a different forum.
