Reccied most of the route yesterday. Over past Tranearth Quarry and Walna Scar from Coniston to Seathwaite and the race route, then Seathwaite Tarn, Grey Friar, etc. passed by OK until White Pike. As I wanted to end up back in Coniston and as the final section will most likely be in private intake fields anyway, I decided to return via Broughton Moor. After what seemed like a couple of hours later I'd emerged onto Hummer Lane and made a beeline for the Wilson Arms for a 'recovery drink'. What had looked like innocuous heathery ground was felled woodland with brash, stumps, logs, boulders, marsh, etc. I think I'd still be there if I hadn't followed some deer tracks.
