Entered here too :w00t:
Would appreciate advice from anyone who's done this as to how important a recce is as I think I'll have limited opportunities to get up there prior to the event
Its important if you dont want to get lost particularily the night sections
I've entered.......yipppeee! Just need to start doing some hard work now.
me too
Its Mrs Staggers fault, I do hate to think I might be missing out on anything...........
Way hey, nice one! Now what can we talk about for 30+ hours?? Oh we'll think of something.
Essential to recce the dark bits.
1. From Wasdale Head to Dockray, there's some tricky navigation especially if it's misty as well as dark.
2. Ambleside to Coniston, navigation fairly straight forward but not after 25+ hours, definitely not the time to be adding miles due to nav error.
The race map and route book are easily followed during daylight, helps to know the route though, just depends on how competitive you are.
Entered 50!!! :o 100 next year!?...just don't tell the missus!
Entered this one after being roped into marshalling at Tilberthwaite checkpoint this year.
Looking forward to getting to the fairy light finish in coniston (hopefully).
Booked on the recces in Novembr and April to get the lay of the land.
Hope the weather is a bit cooler than this year.
Wow, the whole Ultra scene has gone crazy now. I blame the internet. It creates a dilemma. I was going to see if I get in to some other events first before entering this to avoid '100 overdose' in 2012, but no chance of that. I might just get the L50 entered and try for a top ten finish instead. ;) :p :closed:
Doh, posted on the wrong thread.
Didn't see the Lakeland 50 thread.
100 is just TOO long.
Can anyone tell me what the cut-off times are for the 100? Other than a 40-hour limit for the whole thing, I can't see any specific mention on their website.
And does anyone know when we get the map & road book? - just seen you can buy on line but I know you get as part of entry fee at some stage. Thanks
You only get the physical road book and maps on the day of the race.Quote:

You do get the road book in draft format .pdf in the 'competitors area' of the website. The passwords get given out about 6 months before the start.
Rich1. PM'd you
Cheers for that Simon - have replied
Rich, if you want to buy last year's map and roadbook just drop them an email using the contact address on the website. You can print out the online version for free but I bought the actual ones last year and found them nice to get used to. I think they ask for a donation to Fix the Fells...something like that.
L100 and 50 now full, didn't take long, best get training, need 55 more miles in my legs than this year's L50!!!!!!!!!!
I missed out, as the SI Entries lists are still well below the stated limits for both events so I thought there was plenty of time to decide.
Not too upset, the one I really fancied was the 100 and I don't think it would have been wise (I had a knee op earlier this year and haven't really tested it on a big event yet). Will hopefully try in 2012!
Me too Steve. I believe the first 55 miles are pretty flat though ;-)
Hope they do not try to make it part of the ultra series thn
Series not yet announced and it would seem unfair to annouce it when the event is already full
Have you been working out SteveF?
Been on these boards for a while but just getting into contributing. I managed to sneak into the 100 field at the last moment and am now looking forward to the start line come next year.
I did the 50 last year and have come back for the 100. I don't care where I finish within the cut-off so long as I finish - key point is to avoid being in the 50% or so who DNF...
Training wise I'm very much making it up but am looking to get back up to marathon fitness before Christmas and then plan to build up from there. Any tips from seasoned 100ers would be great to read :)
Might be worth picking up a copy of this:

Have a read of Terry Conway's blog (this year's winner) a very down to earth, relaxed runner. I plan to set of relaxed, stay relaxed and see where it gets me, i'll be relaxed just getting round though, not relaxed winning like Terry. Also did the 50 this year and have entered the 100.
Yep, I was entertaining fantasies of a top twenty sub 30hr finish last time out - I ended up crashing and burning v. badly.
I too am going for the totally relaxed approach next year, hoping just to finish then i never need to do it again.
In fact, if I finish, I might have an OS map of the Lake District tattooed on my chest with a big magenta line marking out the route. Would that clash with an iron man tattoo, do you think?
Hi i'm in for the 100 this year. I've ran the 50 twice. my advice is to get out on the route itself as you'll find navigation on the day easier, you'll suss out what equipment you'll need and you'll get fit
T
Have put myself on the W/L for the 50 - any idea of the chances of getting in?
Has the route for the L100 changed this year? Just watched some of John Kynastons videos of the route and bits of it dont tally with my route map from 2010.
1) on leg 2 they crossed doctors bridge on the way to Boot. My map shows you keeping to the left of the river Esk and crossing on stepping stones later.
2) on leg 3 they cross the bridge at wasdale. (we did this in 2010, but only due to the beck being flooded) my map shows you going around the back of the campsite on a trail then joining the road to the CP. They used the road then a trail to the left of the road into the CP.
1) Yes you cross doctors bridge.
2) Yes you cross the bridge and follow the road but unlike in 2010 you don't go on the road all the way but turn off at the corner by the next road bridge so you end up eventually coming over the packhorse bridge beside the Wasdale checkpoint.
Thanks Bill. Must be because they are more garanteed routes with the wet summers we have been having.
