    Re: drug taking in sport

Using and declaring salbutamol at Radcliffe's level requires the medication to be signed off by a doctor. The doc works under very strict protocol handed down from UKA. She would not be getting (or declaring) the drug unless the diagnosis had been made. So the suggestion that she is using salbutamol for performance enhancement is a non-starter. A long winded way of saying boll*cks but there we are.

Notlob I say claims because we don't know one way or another.Thats the problem. The point I make in my messages, is that Salbutamol increases performance through its SIDE EFFECTS not its main effect, for which people take it.Paula Radcliffe isn't cheating because the rules allow it.I say the rules
shouldn't allow it, because regardless of whether an athlete genuinly needs it or not it increases their performance.

Sorry, Chris. I strongly disagree. For anyone to have overcome the difficulties imposed by asthma or even just exercise-induced bronchospasm (which is probably all she has) and to have compteted at her level deserves all the support she can get. The 'performance enhancing' effects you mention are negligible and completely irrelevant compared to the negative effects of airways restriction. Any 'normal' person taking the stuff is unlikely to notice any effect.

Although I've just looked at a weight lifting forum where they chug the stuff to burn fat!!!!
    Ho hum, I'm too naive!!

So...you're not calling Paula Radcliffe a drugs cheat then, but only being provocative with regard to Christopher Leigh's views. OK. On a close reading I can see what you're getting at, I think.

    Re: drug taking in sport

Daz, I reckon all 'asthma sufferers' should post their pre and post salbutamol peak flow rates for public consumption to prove their airways reversability. I'd be happy to show mine. When I was a kid, I suffered the ignominy of never being picked for the playground soccer kick-about coz I was crap. Why? I could not breathe! The scars last a lifetime, hence the nom de forum. I am asthmatic but I run in defiance of it. It has defined my life. Two fingers to the lot of you!!!!!
