Thread: The right physio...

    The right physio...

hmmm not sure if this is a health or injuries related topic??

I need a sports physio....I know a lot of you can recommend good ones from personal experience however I'm pretty limited on time and can't afford a 2 hour round trip plus treatment time so my question is this...

How can I differentiate a good one from a perhaps not 'as good' one??

There are a few local physio clinics near me but I don't know how to sound them out as it were...should I ask specific quesions or is it a case of suck it and see.....I've had a bad experience with a trainee sports massaure (sp) once (different role I know) and whilst I am aware we should all start somewhere don't want to be rendered immobile again!!

    Any tips greatly appreciated...

    Thanks

    hi emmi

its good to get a recommendation - be it from friends or people you work with

even if you are not in your local running club - you may be able to ask them/some local runners for recommendations

Make sure that you are dealing with a 'Chartered' physiotherapist.
There are all sorts of 'osteopaths', 'sports therapists' etc out there who have little more than a 6-week course behind their title.

If it's anything like planes, a scheduled physiotherapist will be more reliable than a chartered one.

More costly, but you will get free peanuts and a bigger seat.

    Hope this helps.

Where is local to you Emmi??????
I'm sure some of the forum will have been through the trial and error way of seeking treatment before you........pick some local brains.

I'm Midlands, but by all means come and see my local chap...he is very good.

    Hi Em,
I,ve seen far too many physio's in the last 18 mths but Denise was the one that made most improvement. If travel is a big issue then Duncan Mason at Worsley physio centre gets an honourable mention. Hope you get better soon

A good physio may have a waiting list. But it would be worth the wait, rather than go to someone who can see you straight away (who may not be as good on running injuries).

Good luck hope you are sorted soon. I'm very lucky Denise Park isn't that from me.

    Re: The right physio...

    hi emmi,

Im a chartered outpatient physiotherapist, specialising in sports injuries for the past 14 years, I work both in the NHS and a very well respected private sports injury cliniic in the south east, more importantly,Im a runner(ultramarathons,24 hr runs etc). Its a minefield for potential patients as there are private clinicians(from consultants to osteopaths to chiropractors and physiotherapists) who will basically rip you off. Sometimes it can be worse if you are insured via BUPA/PPP etc as the clinician then knows you are good for 10 sessions or so and will aim to see you that many times(in central london BUPA will pay up to £90 or so for a session).
Having said that there are also a lot of good clinicians out there who just want to get you better. So how can you tell the good from the bad? First off dont be too swayed by fancy premises on the high street as they probably have high overheads and need an income to match, secondly, go by word of mouth,it counts for a lot, third, book one session at a time, dont be lulled into booking 3 sessions or so in advance as you may not need them, fourth, you want a diagnosis,so after your first session you want to come out having a clear understanding of what the pathology is,how it occurred and what you can do to help recovery(sticking my neck out here but if they just slap an ultrasound or interferential machine on without giving you an exercise programme dont go back),fifth, dont assume going NHS means a long wait(where I work p/t we have self referral and you could be seen within a week) and believe me there are some of the best physiotherapists working in the NHS.
I do hope this has helped and I really hope you find the right clinician for you; remember the body has an amazing ability to adapt and recover and if you back off on the running(maybe water running or cycling) and correct any biomechanical faults you should soon be back to normal(well within reason!)
