    Re: Naughty lil achilles

    Thanks DT and Ady

I hear what you say..will go for a potter tomorrow night and see how it is...don't want anything to go "twang" in a "horrible debilitiating months off from doing anything!" kinda way...but at the same time, I am running as much as a challenge against myself as anything else; its not a race but a challenge

I've had a pretty pants time since last July and this challenge has given me a real reason to kick on and get a real endorphins boost...mmmm...yummy! :-)

Who knows? I may meet wife number three?! :-O

    Evening all

5km done...and in under 30 mins :-) A big thank you to Derby Tup...the concentric/ecccentric exercises are a great help

I am loving my McDavid achilles strap that came this morning...I'll see how my achilles is tomorrow but right here right now, I'm well pleased

I've been thinking about the achilles strap so would be interested to know how much difference it makes. I've been 'suffering' this past four weeks with my latest bout of AT and although it hasn't cleared am currently managing to survive on max 3 runs of c40 mins per week together with icing/foot in bowl of ice cold water for 15 mins post run, TENS machine, eccentric stretches and now diclofenac on prescription (basically Voltarol in tablet form).

Cheers DT, I'd been concentrating on the eccentric 'Swedish' heel dips as per Barty's Carleton link but will have a go at these too.

I did the 1st three but never bothered with the stretching one. 15-20 / leg of each, most days

    Re: Naughty lil achilles

I love the thought of eccentric Swedish.... :-) but thats just my sense of humour I'm afraid.

Right...sit.rep. post run yesterday...I'm actually more stiff in my upper calf than my achilles after wearing the strap, but thats nowt to do with my heel...the pressure from the strap is quite subtle and it's only when you run do you notice that your achilles isn't going "twang"

Now this isn't "Barty does Which Tendon Strap"...I happen to have tried a Neo G ankle strap which wasnt dealing with the specific issue...so bought one a strap that did. I'm no superman (altho' I'm a man, which is super....) but have to admit I felt a lot more confident wearing the strap, even warming up running up and down an incline (a tumulus if you want to know...we dont have many hills in Suffolk)
Resting today so will be out tomorrow night for a 10km and will report back to let you know how it is
So there you are...all good so far...will be trying shoes this week. It's all getting quite exciting :-)

    Interesting DT.

Been reading this thread. Since my BG attempt, I've had a swollen left achilles, a definite lump on it, which eases with exercise.

Off to see the osteo tomorrow, see what he thinks. Still desperately want to go again on 18th July, but not willing to risk a rupture "just" for a BG....so very interesting to read that you ran such long events through the problem.

Rich, I don't really know what to suggest you do apart from what you're already doing ie getting proper medical advice. I tend to think if I'm well enough to work I'm well enough to play. Good luck whatever to choose to do! Andrew

Was over the bogs on Plover hill and footfall landed on a submerged fence post that flicked up and a nail that was in it stabbed my achilles. Being full of mud I couldn't see my legs properly and 40 minutes later when I washed off in the stream there was no bleeding. At the time it caused me no problems and I did not think about it but there is still a scar where the nail went it and when I think about it I did start getting niggles after a run shortly after this............????
