I'd agree with your first sentence 110% Iain, Peris 2006 was a mother. All to play for in the British, nd high 20s, no wind and no cloud.

Wasdale's certainly harder than Jura, streets apart. But Peris? Not so sure - a bit longer and a bit more climbing, but apart from Pen Y Pass hardly any water en route (loads of streams yesterday esp between the road and Gable) and from Y Lliwedd to the finish is probaly the harding bit of fell racing I've done .

I was talking to a few others, most agreed but some had the same view as you. I think I find the Peris quite easy because it's my local, I live in the centre of the race. Maybe being so familiar it just makes it seem much smaller. On the Peris I find that getting to Lliwedd is the key, and quite enjoy the last bit. Wasdale has lots of gradual up hill running, that god awful meadow at the top of seatallan (which is probably a lovely spot outside of the race), the long traverse after the descent of seatallan, and the climb to eskhaus and ill crag which is what I struggle on. In Peris an Jura it's all big steep climbs, good old walking hills. On the gradual hills the better runners just leave for dead.

    Come off it!

    Records:

    Peris: 3.02 Gavin Bland 1994

Wasdale: 3.25 Billy Bland 1982 which is around 20 minutes faster than Rob Jebb managed yesterday in an English Championship counter, "loads of streams", or not.

The differnce is 5 miles and 1000ft. So if you work it out as a percentage i.e. bring them on par then wasdale would be 16 miles with around 6750ft of ascent so more than 1000ft less.

so on a distance ascent comparison Peris is harder. The hills are slightly more runnable (i have done a bit round there) and i think that on certain parts the running will be naturally a lot quicker

Hmm, not convinced Lliwedd, Glyder Fawr, Snowdon or even Cyngorion are particually runable, whereas it's only really Great Gable you have to walk up on Wasdale.

And I'm not convinced that the difficulty of a race is related to its course record. Does that make the Yorkshire Offroad Marathan harder than Peris or Wasdale?

Both are grand days out, but I'd give Peris the edge. Wasdale certainly has it's moments though
