    Re: Edale Skyline 2010

Last year the check point after Mam Nick was at the wall rather than at Lord's Seat itself. This meant I turned right for Brown Knoll later than I intended (or is shown on the race map). Am I remebering this correctly, or is time and tiredness on the day playing tricks on me?

    Cheers - Raymond Hickman

Mapping on Tracklogs shows the totals as 20.8m 4347ft with Mam Nick at 11.2m and 3019ft leaving 9.6m and 1328ft for the second half. Mam Nick is also quite high so the second half is downhill overall.

However, the second half is much rougher and wilder than the first and as you rightly suggest the cut-off is quite tight for some (me included) which means you push a bit harder at the start than you might consider wise. Apart from the climb to Ringing Roger the first half is all on pretty good paths.

The checkpoint seems to move every year - some years you can turn off earlier than other years!

I think Lord's Seat itself is before the early turnoff where I believe you actually decend slightly before heading right or is there an even shorter short cut here abouts?

Yay! Had my entry confirmed today - this'll be my main target for the first half of the year I reckon. Had a look at the route on Google Earth an it looks fairly straightforward (most of the shortcuts seem obvious enough). However, I'll still be reccying it a few times beforehand. Did I remember someone saying that there's usually a forum recce at some point? That'd be extremely helpful.

Don't worry too much about making the cut-off in training, I've purposly never tried this as I know I won't do it without the pressure of racing so if you get within 15mins or so your probably going to be ok.

The route after Mam Nick can get very lonely when the clag's down, it's cold and wet and you can't see another soul, this is when you need to dig in and keep going. I think this is why they ask for relevant experience rather than just being fit enough to cover the distance and make the cut.

Good luck, hope you get in.

    Re: Edale Skyline 2010

Since the first half of the race up to mam nick has considerably more elevation and is beyond halfway leaving only 9 miles approx making it a tight schedule for mortals i have adapted my training and i would like the opinion of more experienced heads if they would be so kind. I am training for this race as if it was 10 to 20 mile further so lot more time on feet but most importantly i am doing twice as much speed work because of the tight first half so i will have to push harder than i would like to ordinarily so increasing my ability to run faster for longer would seem to be the answer. What do you think ?.
