    Re: Water

I drink from streams when needed, and prety much agree with Stolly on choice of stream. Only other thing I try to avoid is streams where there is foam on them...

I tend to take a bottle for any run of an hour or longer. I just find my throat gets really dry and it makes breathing difficult. A personal preference. I will stop to fill up from a stream no problems, and actually prefer that water to the tapped stuff.

I did forget my water bottle doing the 2nd half FTOP last week, but at each water crossing, a few handfuls was enough to keep me lubricated. The spring as you go up Big End (hidden by the grass but audible as you climb) tastes particularly sweet!

My rule of thumb is clear and fast moving, with a check upstream as far as I can see to check there's nothing dead or nasty to make me poorly.

    Re: Water

I've been drinking from 'natural' sources for years and I've not come a cropper yet. As long as its clear and quick moving I've found it perfectly fine. But even fast moving streams can have 'slower' inlets where the water can swirl and slow right down - I avoid those.

Generally, I can get a good ten miles or so under my belt before needing a drink, if I know I'm going further then I'll take either a bottle for shorter distances or a platypus for longer efforts. But I don't think I've ever taken either out full to the top.

Curiously, I tend to get hungry long before I get thirsty. Is there a thread dealing with staying well fed?!
